Beginner skater First fall in 20+ years* :)

I (45m) took my first fall today and I can't stop laughing. I started skating again in July (used to be a rink rat in elementary school) after watching a few Moxi vids.

I've been doing laps at my local park on the walking path almost everyday. Mostly just skating forward with the occasional backwards skating and adding a little flair when I can haha. Nothing crazy and just being cautious cause I didn't want to fall. Today it happened. Pop-punk in the earphones and doing this bubble to crossover thing...sticky skate thing I like to do. I'm pretty sure my brain said cross but the feet did bubbles and I clipped my wheels and rolled into the grass (yes protection was on).

I can't stop laughing, I'm alive and well. No broken hips or anything I was afraid of. I'm no longer afraid a fall will kill me and I can't wait to start taking risks and progressing. First new skill...jump 180s here I come!!!! Happy skating everyone! May all your falls be gentile!

We might lose the last roller rink in Albuquerque.

Skate-O-Mania on Paisano St (400 Paisano St NE) has been here since 1980 — it started as Roller King. Most people know it now as Rink-O-Mania from Stranger Things Season 4. That scene where Eleven is bullied was filmed there, and Netflix let them keep the whole set.

It's the last remaining rink in the city. Birthdays, school nights, first dates — if you grew up here you probably went.

I heard it might close soon so I started a petition to show there's still support to keep it open. If you want to sign, DM me and I'll send the link.

Skill questions & help Learning one-foot pivots

• Upvotes

Should I be practicing pivots with all four wheels in contact with the ground, or is it better to practice by lifting the front/back wheels slightly off the ground? What’s the correct form?

I’ve been drilling one-foot pivots on a smooth surface with 96A wheels, so I can slide around pretty easy with four wheels down. But I’m worried I’ll have to relearn them completely on a rougher surface. That wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world lol but I’m wondering if I should be practicing differently.

Skate problems & troubleshooting Plate upgrades - is it possible?

Hey! First time posting!

So I used to do ice skating many years ago and decided on a whim of FOMO, I’d switch to quad skating. I’m at skating lessons once a week and at a roller disco with friends every weekend. I love it.

I started out on Rio Roses then realised it was a bit blah, then moved onto Reidell Orbits which honestly I love. I love how colourful they are and they bring me joy however, the standard plate that is on it, isn’t as responsive as I’d like it to be, I also find it rather heavy. I’m doing a lot more artistic style skating (although my goal isn’t to compete artistically, I more or less wanted to be more competent) and when mentioning it to my coach, how I feel like I need something a bit lighter and that my shins hurt - he said my boot wouldn’t be able to take a new plate. That in time it would ruin the boot completely. 80% of the support comes from the boot and the rest from the technology underfoot. The recommendations obviously for artistic skating is Edea boots with variant plate - I’m not sure I’m a fan of the Edea skates and honestly, if I’m not competing, I don’t see the need to be in them.

Alas, I think I’m likely to stick with Riedell as I just think their fitting is much nicer. I had considered if my boots weren’t able to take a new plate, to save and go for a more artistic style Riedells but that seems like a longer way off and I was hoping for an intern solution.

Google says - change cushions which I’ll do and also loosen the kingpin (which apparently isn’t a great thing to do and can cause injury on my plate…). Which I’ve done and it’s helped but it doesn’t help the weight I feel under foot. I’ve been going round and round over this for what feels like weeks and it’s hurting my brain (thanks to my unwavering adhd obsession)

I could potentially rent/lease a full complete set up to see what it’s like and see if it truly would be beneficial but to quote my favourite Babylon 5 - it feels a bit like “you moon faced assassin of joy” choosing a path of white or blaaaacckkk yawn

So, I’m picking the brains of those who may be more experienced. Is there anything I can do to help? I am progressing quicker than I ever expected and I’d like to be able to change it up to help with the progression of my skating. Will changing my plate cause my boots to die? Is it worth just going for a more stiffer and more padded boot?

Any advice is greatly appreciated 🙂

Other How long will moxi skates take to ship to uk?

I bought myself a pair of moxi beach bunnies skates a few days ago and was just wondering how long it takes to usually ship to uk? I’m very impatient for them as they’re an early birthday present to myself but I wanna wear them in by my birthday (one month to today) so that I can go skating comfortably on my birthday as my current skates can barely even turn properly (no, it’s not the trucks or wheels or cushions I’ve tried everything to fix them they’re just really bad skates)

Skill questions & help First step after the basics?

I used to skate on a rink with friends about once or twice a week for maybe two months. I recently came to college and bought my first pair of skates for myself and have been skating almost daily for about a month as it's a pretty good way to get to class and it's a nice stress reliever. At this point i've nailed the basics, I can crossover through a turn like it's nothing and can even turn myself around by putting my weight in the toe of one foot (though only fairly slowly as staying backwards and stable is rough). I've never had any kind of teaching though and don't really know where to go from here and wanted to know what i should be working on. I don't need anything crazy, just something to show off a bit when i get back on the rink at home.

I barely got to the skatepark and I noticed my back trucks were unaligned after I tried grinding a ledge. I went to pop it back in and noticed my kingpin keeps slipping inward and is loose! It doesn’t come out completely. Do I need a new plate??? I just got this avanti mag this year!!😩😩😩

I have been using my Riedell Darts pretty heavily for about a year in roller derby. I noticed this tear in the boot, but was hoping I could patch it up until my new skates arrived. Any luck using glue or tape to fix this issue?

I used to love rink skating as a kid but never had my own skates. My kid recently expressed interest and so we started going again almost weekly (shout out to Oaks Park in Portland). Finally bit the bullet and got my own skates and I hadn't realized how much easier skating becomes when you have good equipment.

Beginner skater I don’t know what I’m doing

So I’ve been practicing in my kitchen for months now cause I’m too afraid to go outside. I bought the gear and then I finally went outside today. I just went on my driveway. I didn’t go far and every time I try to do what I was doing in my kitchen. I was having issues and somehow I kept rolling back even though my balance was centered, obviously I fell, but that’s normal with skating, but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and I tried to do bubbles today, but somehow my skates weren’t letting me turn when my trucks are very loose
I just feel like I learned better if I went to a lesson or something with a big group, but I live in a small town and nobody really skates around here
I really wanna get into skating in all of that but it’s so hard cause I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m really lost even though I’ve been watching YouTube tutorials. I follow a lot of skaters on TikTok. I don’t know what I’m doing still.
I wish there was a coach or a lesson plan that I can follow through somebody because I have a lot of questions
I can always see those TikTok groups that follow each other or they’re learning together and I wish I was a part of that because I feel like I’ve learned better than by myself with a bunch of videos so I took off my skates. I’m just staying calm and I’ll reflect on it tomorrow, but I don’t know what I’m doing and I wish I did.

Beginner skater Brand new skater! Ow my back

Hi friends!
I’m new to skating and have been trying my best to practice, but after like 15 minutes my lower back starts to HURT/cramp? Like there’s no relief except to get out of the skates and stretch and sit down. Also, my feet cramp.
Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Skate park 2.5” trucks or 3” ??

Calling all aggressive quad skaters: do you prefer 2.5 inch trucks or 3 inches?

I’ve gotten really comfortable with the 2.5s with coping/transition. I really want to start ledges but when I put my Skate up to the ledge, I just don’t understand how to lock in at all, it seems impossible and so small.
For the people that are into ledges, do you feel that the 3s make it much easier or not a huge difference? Basically, am I being a wuss and trying to make excuses or should I upgrade to the 3 inches before attempting ledges?

Thx in advance <3

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades attachable wheels for regular shoes?

hey all! i just wanted to start off by saying im extremely new to skating. i tried as a kid but my mom sold my skates because i wasn't learning fast enough, so as an adult im trying to do things ive always wanted to do.

i know there are detachable skates called slades but they're very expensive and i was wondering if there was a better alternative? i dont have a lot of money but i need something to get me to work as my bike was stolen.

another question, is it possible to modify my own shoes to work with these things? i have very special shoes that help my feet not hurt as much since i have a minor disability.

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Plate help (small feet)

May crosspost this to the roller derby community as well!

I have been sat looking at the hardware at the WFTDA champs in Malmo today and finally accepted that my plates are way too big.

I skate on a gen 1 Quadstar boot in Bont size 2.5 (217mm foot length) and I have size 3 Arius Platinums mounted to them. They have an overhang at the back of about 3mm and make my toestop work really tiptoey and uncomfortable.

Previously I had Mota plates in a 5" length, but I cannot find any derby brands that go down that small apart from Bont - I have heard not so good things about the trucks and general manufacture of their plates. Are there any Roll Line plates that will go that small that don't way a tonne? I really like the Arius, they are just the wrong size for my feet. Any help would be appreciated 🙏
