New Android Play Store changes

As explained in the FAQ, about 5 years ago, Google implemented a requirement that all apps in the Play Store must conform to their Storage Access Framework API. At the time, there was no good way for us to do so, and even if we could, it would severely limit how we could interact with the filesystem. Since then, we have not been allowed to update the versions on the Play Store (or the cores they use), so we left them alone and recommended everyone sideload the apk from our website.

Fast-forward to the past few months (at the time of this writing) and Google says they're going to remove "old" programs from the Play Store entirely, and they're already hiding the app from many newer devices. One of our contributors took it on to get it in-line with the Play Store policies, since having an up-to-date-but-restricted release would be preferable to no app at all.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What's changed?

A: Lots of stuff. Too much to list. 5 years of updates.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: All of my stuff has been deleted!

A: Nothing has been deleted, but the updated RetroArch is probably looking in different locations now, and it probably can't see the old locations if you try to change them back. The sideload-able apk from our website and/or the version from F-Droid or other non-Google storefronts should still be roughly similar to the old Play Store version in what locations it can access, so you could try switching to it instead.

You can also migrate your old data to the new locations. In the old version, all of the files are kept in the root of the device (often /storage/emulated/0/) in a folder called RetroAarch. In order to use them with the new play version, you can connect your phone to a PC and copy the files from (/storage/emulated/0)/RetroAarch to the new location at /media/com.retroarch/RetroArch (or /media/com.retroarch.aarch64/RetroArch if plus version).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I moved all of my savestates to the new location (or switched to the sideload apk) but the savestates won't load!

A: Savestates are extremely volatile and are rendered incompatible by even minor changes to the emulated hardware. This makes them incompatible with other cores for the same system, and even sometimes with other versions of the same core. A lot of updates have happened in 5 years, and I would guess few if any up-to-date cores can load savestates made with a 5-yr-old core.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What's with all of these cores? I don't want them.

A: Go to settings > core > manage > [corename] > delete.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: I don't see my favorite core in the online updater anymore!

A: The Play Store imposes strict limits on the number of cores we can make available through the app (more for the Plus version, but still limited), and we replaced a few that were available in the old version to match our other storefront releases (notably: MAMEs). You can still add arbitrary cores by downloading them manually from the buildbot webserver (in the subdir for your device's architecture) and then moving it somewhere RetroArch can see it, then using the 'install or restore a core' routine found in the 'load core' menu.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Since updating, I'm getting a lot of crashes when I...

A: Please send the automated crash reports whenever possible. These go directly to us and are very helpful for pinning down and fixing this sort of thing. You can also make threads here, but please make sure you include logs and information about your device/system/environment so we can try to help you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Okay, nevermind, just give me a copy of the old version and all those old cores and I'll keep using them forever.

A: We don't have that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical Support: SOLVED FAQ: READ THESE BEFORE ASKING

This post will include common questions and their answers. If you came to this sub to ask a support question, please read/search through these before asking. If you ask a question that is already answered here, your post may be locked or deleted.

If you would like to suggest something be added to the FAQ, please use modmail, as I do not want this post to turn into a support free-for-all nor do I want a million public "please add this to the FAQ" posts/comments.

Showcase I’d like an outside opinion on how my overlays are coming along.

I'm currently improving the design of the overlays I posted here a few months ago so they don't look quite so simple, and I'd like to know how they're turning out.

Note: For the Neo Geo Pocket overlay, I used one I found on Google as a base to position the buttons, but I still need to finish designing the menu and pause buttons.

Technical Support Some questions about Blastem Retroarch...

• Upvotes

For starters, I'd like to say that I LOVE this new version of Blastem. However, I do have two questions on how to get the most of it. I would like to figure out how to run 32X games on it, as well as how to run Mode 1 CD and MSU-MD hacks. According to the thread from the developer himself, all three things should work. However, I don't know how to set up Mode 1 CD and MSU-MD on here, and I cannot figure out what BIOS to use for 32X. I've tried numerous files, and all brought me to a black screen. Maybe 32X doesn't work with the Libretro fork atm? idk. However, any help on the Libretro fork is greatly appreciated!

Using bluetooth keyboard and mouse with Retroarch 1.22.2 (stable) on Galaxy Fold 8 (Android 17)

Hey everyone,

I've been trying to get my keyboard and mouse working with Retroarch since I got my Galaxy Fold 8.

Until then, I used my Galaxy Tab S8 which didn't require any sort of setup to have keyboard and mouse working, so it was basically a wireless "plug and play" experience.

After this isn't the case anymore, I did some research if someone has the same problem, compared options that may differ from my Tab with the ones that came out of the box ofter installing, switched to the Retroarch nightly build but nothing did help.

Enabling mouse control in the options or having a mouse explicitly used on a port didn't help either as most of the posts I have found suggested (these were options that I didn't even touch on my Tab).

Just to be clear: mouse and keyboard only refuse work in Retroarch, regardless the core I use.
ScummVM for example works fine.

I assume this has something to do with Android 17 since the Tab still runs Android 16, maybe OneUI 9 related, but I don't have devices here to check that.

So if anyone has the same problem on the Galaxy Fold 8 or any device running Android 17, I'd really appreciate your feedback and, if someone has fixed that already, a resolution.

Thanks :-)

Christmas Nights into Dreams not detecting base game's save file (beetle saturn)

The Nightopian collection in Christmas Nights into Dreams is supposed to use save data from Nights Into Dreams, but it is not working for me. Christmas does not see the base game's save file. I don't know if I'm missing a setting. I have "shared internal memory" enabled, but that's all I can think of. Is this possible?

Technical Support Bad video in Applewin core

Post image
4 Upvotes

idk why this is happening, but no matter which video mode, no matter what resolution mode, I choose (even with default settings on everything non-video related) the colors are ludicrously messed up. I've tried Apple IIe (Enhanced), Apple IIe (Original), and Apple II J modes. None improved it. My only shaders are the ones preset in regular Pixel AA, and look fine in other cores. Any ideas as to why this is so messed up?

Shaders for 1366x768 LCD screen

I want to install RetroArch on an old laptop that can emulate up to PS2 (and I'm not sure if it can handle anything higher than that). The screen has a resolution of 1366x768 (LCD). Which shaders should I use? I'm interested in the CRT shaders, but I understand they're designed for higher resolutions. I'd like some suggestions for shaders/presets that don't introduce too many visual “anomalies”.

Technical Support: SOLVED (Melon DS DS) why is "Y" and "Close Lid" bound together in port 1 controls?

it appears as "Y / Close Lid" in the image, I've tried a bunch of stuff but that seems to be unchangeable. Actually, I've played a few games and it never close the Lid when I pressed Y, but it happened in Castlevania just now and I couldn't "open" that lid in anyway.

I appreciate any help

Technical Support: SOLVED getting RetroArch (Android) to "see" extra buttons on a physical gamepad

Embarrassing Edit: apparently what I wanted works with no effort. So.

I use the 8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming controller which has two back paddles. In the 8bitdo app you can assign these buttons to replicate other existing buttons just like the Switch 2 Pro controller, but they aren't meant to be separate inputs. But a third-party app like Button Mapper CAN see them and assign them to other functions.

Is there a way to make Retroarch on Android see these buttons so I can assign hotkeys to them?

I promise I did search because I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before, but I could not find it. There is a bit in the FAQ for this subreddit that covers the concept of your controller having more buttons than there are on the Retropad, but I don't think it directly answers my question.

Showcase Lola Retro – a slang CRT shader that simulates the whole analog chain, not just scanlines (8 presets, curved + flat)

Post image
116 Upvotes

Hi all. I wanted the look I remember from fat CRT TVs, not just scanlines on top of sharp pixels, so I made a shader that simulates the whole path:

console video encoder → cable → TV decoder → electron beam → phosphor mask → glass

What that gets you:

- Real composite/RF/S-Video/RGB. The signal is encoded onto the colour subcarrier with each console's real pixel clock, then decoded like a TV would. Sonic's waterfalls turn translucent with the rainbow edge, PS1 dithering melts into smooth gradients, and RGB stays sharp.

- Electron beam whose width grows with brightness, so bright lines merge and dark lines show gaps.

- Masks: aperture grille (with Trinitron damper wires), slot mask, shadow mask, CRT projector screen.

- Glass: curvature, halation, white point, misconvergence.

Zero setup: the console is detected from the frame size (NES, SNES, Mega Drive, PS1, PS2, Amiga, arcade, DOS), and higher internal resolutions on PS1/PS2 work too.

Presets (each in a `curved/` and a `flat/` folder): Consumer TV Composite, Consumer TV SCART RGB, Trinitron S-Video, Studio Monitor RGB, Old TV RF, CRT Projector, PC Monitor VGA, Amiga 1084S.

Install: copy the `lola-retro` folder into your shaders folder, load `curved/consumer-tv-composite.slangp`. Needs a slang driver (Vulkan, glcore, Metal, D3D11/12).

There's a file with recommended cores and settings for everything from NES to PS2.

Tested on glcore and Vulkan, and on a Mac with Metal. D3D isn't tested yet, so reports are welcome. MIT licensed.
(Note: tested on quite strong M4 Pro with 24 gb ram, works well. How it works on slower PCs, I have no idea)

It's named after Lola, my retriever. Retro because it is retro.

https://github.com/zoran123456/lola-retro

Feedback welcome, especially from people who still have real CRTs to compare.

Technical Support Any experience using wiimote as lightgun?

Technically not a retroarch issue but im trying to use my wiimote and dolphin bar as a poor mans light gun setup. And it would work perfectly if only the mouse/reticle would not freeze a little bit after every shot making any game with moving targets impossible. Any idea's on a solution?

Technical Support Save states getting overwritten

Hello,

I’ve been enjoying using retroarch to emulate a ton of systems on my Retroid Pocket Classic. I noticed that whenever I charge the system battery to 100%, the device resets all applications and the only one that gives me trouble is retroarch. When this app hard resets, it loses a lot of (but not all) save states within the emulator and any save data within the game files. Is there something wrong with my hotkeys or am I doing something wrong with creating save states? Is there an easy way for me to test and fix this? Thanks!

Retroarch on android auto

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

I got retroarch running on android auto after knowing that google allowed games to run while parked.

https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2026/09/bring-android-game-to-car-screen.html

it was 3 lines change in retroarch AndroidManifest.xml files and recompiling then enabling dev mode with unknown sources on android auto and it works even with a controller.

I think retroarch team will have to test it more throughly to get Google's approval if they want to include it but I'm happy with what I have this is much better than the junk games available for android auto.

Technical Support PS2 emulation on RetroArch for Android.

Is it possible to install a PS2 core into RetroArch and play PS2 games on Android? There is a reason for me not to use a PS2 emulator like NetherSX2. I want to play PS2 games on my Android TV box, but no such PS2 emulators are supported on Android TVs; however, RetroArch is supported. Therefore, I want to install a PS2 core inside RetroArch to play them, but I do not know how to set that up. Also, how am I supposed to load the PS2 BIOS there?
