(Another) Reminder on sub moderation

Hi all,

We will continue to be consistent with the moderation rules which have been in place for quite a long time:

Posts need to be specific to Redding or the region, and they must adhere to Reddit's content policy.

Once again, no national politics - favoring any side - unless it's specifically relevant to Redding.

2026 Update: Non-local posts which make little-to-no genuine attempt to tie to local relevance will result in a 3-day ban. Subsequent instances will result in longer bans.

Regarding the use of Twitter/X links, we've scrolled back several months and didn't see a single one. So, we are not going to make a sub policy banning it, simply because it would be addressing a problem that we really don't have. We're not a large sub with a lot of aggregator content, so we don't really see twitter/x relevant to Redding. If you'd like to, you can always do what we've done and deactivate/delete your account there, thus taking action yourself.

As always, please do continue to report content which you believe violates our simple ruleset, and we will continue to review. While we do have Automod set up (and I can tell you it is definitely helping quite a bit, thought you cannot see it), we are still a small sub with a small mod team.

Thank you for helping us maintain our lively community subreddit.

Redding Police Officer Ray Maready - Unlawful detainment

As a homeless advocate, I watched Redding Police Ray Maready and partner jacking up homeless and throwing away all of their possessions when he came over to my vehicle and said my driver's license was in violation. Made me wait while they ran me by ShasCom and confirmed why saying for not filling out a DMV questionnaire. Which I checked with DMV and there was no violations and did not know what this officer was talking about..... Lie number 1

Then he said I was parked on private property, which I was far from a non-posted gate nowhere near private property... Lie number 2

This cop was detaining me illegally on a "fishing expedition"

As a homeless advocate in is my right to watch and document you should you violate homeless folks Civil and Constitutional rights

It is also my right to file a report with the RPD "Professional Standards Unit" for a formal investigation

Has this officer had problems in the past?

I never realized that these grow operations are so harmful to the environment, this article points out the dangers with some of the chemicals used in grow operations: "Many containers recovered by deputies feature Chinese-language labels and contain lethal, restricted chemicals like Carbofuran. According to U.S. Forest Service research on illegal cannabis grows, growers use these banned poisons to kill off wildlife near irrigation lines, leaving behind toxic "ecological land mines" that contaminate waterways and kill native predators long after a site is abandoned."

Haven Humane is launching a Doggy Sleepover Program this weekend and they’re looking for five households to participate! If you’ve ever wanted to try fostering, this is a perfect opportunity. It’s a very short term commitment, but you have the opportunity to make a HUGE difference for a dog in need.

Copied and pasted from Facebook post:

🐶 Give a Shelter Dog a Weekend Away With Our Doggy Sleepover Program! ❤

Our new Doggy Sleepover Program gives medium to large dogs a little time away from the shelter and helps us learn more about what they’re like in a home. It’s also a great way to try fostering without a long-term commitment!

We’re looking for five households who’d be up for having a shelter dog stay with them THIS WEEKEND, Friday, Oct. 23 through Monday, Oct. 26!

🐾 Here's How It Works:

📝 Apply: Read the Program Guidelines and fill out the application linked below. We’ll review your application and match you with a dog!
📅 Sleepover dates: Pick up your dog on Friday, October 23, and bring them back on Monday, October 26.
🦴 We’ll provide the basics: Food, toys, and bedding, if needed.
📸 Tell us how it went: Take photos throughout the weekend and fill out a short report card at the end.

📋 READ THE PROGRAM GUIDELINES: https://shorturl.ly/n6Ogu
📝 APPLY FOR THIS WEEKEND: https://www.cognitoforms.com/HavenHumaneSociety/DoggySleepoverSignUp

Cat at the Dollar Tree on Athens. He has a collar with no tags but hasn’t been scanned to see if he’s chipped. Workers say he’s a regular, but no one seems to know who he belongs to. He’s VERY friendly!

Justice For Wang Wang Protest Saturday Oct 24 - 5 pm Redding Sundial Bridge

"On June 28, 2026, a group of minors (all under the age of 14) in Pingpu Village tortured and killed Wang Wang and her three newborn puppies. The boys beat the puppies to death, dragged Wang Wang by a wire tied around her neck, beat her with sticks, poked her eyes out, and ultimately doused her in fuel to burn her alive. They filmed the entire attack and uploaded it online, where it quickly went viral and caused widespread distress and anger.

Investigative reports by outlets like CNN have uncovered encrypted chat groups on platforms like Telegram and domestic Chinese apps where graphic videos of cat and dog torture are shared, traded, and sold internationally for profit.

Filming the beating of animals, using blow torches, blenders, microwaves, skinning alive, live crucifixion, grinding up baby kitties forcing mother to eat, sexual assault, boiling water immersion, etc...

These Animal or Zoo sadists have contests to see who can diabolically come up with more macabre ways to torture animals and film videos...Unspeakable suffering, For profit...And their sick perverted pleasure.

Join us as we join cities and countries all over the world putting Redding California on the map have an awareness protest for Wang Wang, and demand China adopts Animal Cruelty laws!

How damn cruel they are... the dog's name Wang Wang and this happened by some children in China.. - YouTube

How many trick or treaters stop by your house?

Typically how many trick or treaters stop by your house?

I recently moved to Redding and want to know how much candy I should have for Halloween.

I moved from a town that has been taken over by trunk or treat so I'd barely get any trick or treaters.

I bought a few bags of candy and Rice Krispies from Target but am wondering if I should get more. TIA!

An excellent message from highly reputable and thoughtful person. Shasta county, please take note of her comment.

Shasta County, this post is for you.

I am quiet by nature and prefer to avoid confrontation. And yet …

I find myself in a moment when it is important to speak up. I am in my 12th and final year of service on the Shasta County Board of Education. What was once an effective and collaborative board has become one that is performative and self-interested.

What I am sharing here are my own thoughts. I am not speaking on behalf of the board.

I have worked with three superintendents and 18 board members. The board has always been a mix of personalities — trustees with varied beliefs, interests and life experiences. We didn’t always agree but we were able to work together. Previous boards were student-centered and valued public education. No one was suspicious or dismissive of public schools.

Sadly, the Shasta County Board of Education is now seen as a place to gain power and attention. The vibe is righteous and rigid. National political agendas and personal crusades permeate meetings.

Some concerns:

— Board members say they are committed to fiscal discipline, but are they? On a motion by trustee Authur Gorman, the board approved, with one dissenting vote, an increase in its monthly pay from $266 to $800 — a 200 percent hike. That is a huge jump and not aligned with the community service role. With seven regular members and two student board members, $800 for each adds up to a lot of taxpayer money — as much as $7,200 a month — funneled to board members month after month. How does this serve the students of Shasta County?

— Board members have not shown up for key Shasta County Office of Education (SCOE) events. During the past year my board colleagues, with the exception of our student board members, did not attend a student voice session with high schoolers providing perspectives on key issues; a panel discussion by community experts on social media dangers; All Call, with all SCOE departments, to launch the new school year; and Every Student Succeeding, a powerful event honoring students who have overcome significant challenges.

— The board majority, with two dissenting votes, did away with the longstanding practice of requiring board approval for board members to attend trainings and conferences. There’s a spending cap, but no prior approval is required to use taxpayer dollars for plane tickets, hotels, meals and registration. Also ended was the expectation that trainings be within California and be designed for school board members. Now a board member can go to any state, for any training, without any approval. Events sponsored by national organizations with a political agenda are fair game.

— The board gets distracted from the fundamental work of supporting students and school districts. Board members Authur Gorman, Teresa Roberts, Jackie LaBarbera and Michael Orlicky orchestrated a special meeting of the apolitical Shasta County Committee on School District Organization to take a political stance on a ballot measure unrelated to the committee’s clearly defined authority.

— The board majority, with two dissenting votes, dropped Shasta County’s decades-long membership in the California School Boards Association, resulting in less transparency and the loss of valuable services. SCOE no longer has access to CSBA’s GAMUT services used by many school districts in the state to help keep school board policies legally compliant and to provide board members, staff and the public easy access to policies, complete agenda packets and minutes. CSBA also provides board members with important trainings and insights on educational issues.

The Shasta County Office of Education does valuable work. It serves vulnerable students, including incarcerated youth and young people with significant learning and behavior challenges. It supports teachers in literacy, math and science instruction. The multiple layers of SCOE include business services, preschools, work with local tribes, community collaborations, Schreder Planetarium and Whiskeytown Environmental School programs.

All that good work deserves a good board.

And that, Shasta County, is where you come in. The Nov. 3 election is critical. Four Shasta County Board of Education seats are on the ballot. Don’t sit out this vote thinking, “Well, I don’t know much about the Shasta County Board of Education.”

It matters that thoughtful people who care about our community vote for candidates who care about Shasta County and our public schools.

There are excellent candidates. I have endorsed four in a separate post and will include my recommendations in the comments.

Oh, regarding that $800-a-month stipend for each board member, I voted against the pay hike. I have donated my money to five organizations in Shasta County doing important work on behalf of young people.

Do you trust the police in Redding?

Atleast two years back I visited Redding to see a friend. Had taken the train from the Bay Area. It took around 7 hours to get there around midnight then waited for the bus that came at 7 am. Just to get to several hotels that turned me away saying they were full. Then I walked trying to get to another one. And passed out in 100 degree heat on the sidewalk. Someone must have saw me and decided to call the police. Several officers approach me not identifying themselves with one saying your going to jail. Proceed to hit my head against the ground and handcuff me.

After all that while one put me in the back of the car. One of the officers was proudly claiming he didn't do it by the book at all. And on the drive to a medical clinic the officer driving called me boy. As an African American I've had to deal with racism before. But I will never be visiting Redding again.

Also the cop lied during his report saying he suspected I was drugs. I've never taken drugs. It was 100 degrees and I hadn't made it to hotel while being sleep deprived in heavy black clothes due to the temperature difference in the Bay Area. My Attorney and Family was against suing the Police Department because the area leans towards Trump and it would be hard to hold an officer accountable as an African American.

A Redding's Bethel couple ( Kris Vallotton grandson) are fighting for their lives on a tiny, microscopic salary of $18,590. a month. I don’t know how they survive such poverty! /s

Alley Vallotton is oversharing (her word) her

monthly budgeting breakdown with her husband

Elijah (Pastor Kris's grandson; the guy who got his wife 60

million views on an IG reel in which she shared

Elijah told her he was "struggling to find her

attractive" while they were still dating)

She frames this reel series as a young married

couple that "sucks at budgeting" just trying to get

better at managing their money.

The money that they reportedly earn from two

businesses and one full-time income (presumably

from Bethel as they are both listed as staff).

She disclosed their total income for the month of

August was $18,590.

Then she disclosed they made $34,271 the month

of September.

My flabbers are gasted.

The toxic relationship dynamics notwithstanding

the audacity to publicize this obscene wealth and

describe the month as "expensive" is breathtakir~
