News US pending home sales tumble to record low in September

  • U.S. pending home sales fell 7.3% in September, reaching an index level of 66.0, the lowest reading since the series began in 2001.
  • The drop was much worse than expected, as economists had forecast only a 0.5% decline, and pending sales were down 11.3% from a year ago.
  • Every major U.S. region saw declines, with the West (-9.2%) and South (-8.2%) experiencing the biggest monthly drops.
  • Because pending sales lead closed sales by 1 to 2 months, the report suggests existing-home sales activity is likely to remain very weak in the near term.

Interest rates will never go down, but prices have to go down, or else it becomes a money pit for the sellers' holding costs.
