New website to help beginner RC Heli pilots: https://www.learntoflyhelis.com/

Hey RC Heli community - I wanted to share a site I put together that hopefully helps others along in their heli journey:

https://www.learntoflyhelis.com/

It's a free interactive tracker for the RCHN Pilot Proficiency Program — all 179 maneuvers across the 7 levels, with status tracking, notes, and a witness field for each one, plus a getting-started section with gear/sim recommendations and some community links. All credit to RCHN for the original program; this just makes it easier to track your progress against it.

I've learned a lot over the past several months and still have plenty of learning and practicing ahead before I'd call myself an experienced pilot. Would love any feedback — especially if there are resources or maneuvers-specific tips missing from the community links section.

Cheers,
Kyle

I played RealFlight G2 as a kid in 2003, +23 years later, my first actual real heli.

I was curious how well the memory of playing RealFlight G2 (computer game) 23 years ago (in 2003) would carry over into 2026. (I played hundreds and hundreds of hours as a kid as I had few other games)

Crazy addicted already, it's day 25 and I ended up buying a total of 3 Goosky S1s with 16 batteries and tons of parts to deal with the crashes and repairs. So many repairs (even super gluing various parts and flying with bent tail booms while parts were in the mail).

Flying every day:

Week 1. Lots of self-leveling mode practice, mostly survival, 10+ crashes. First attempts at a roll or flip (three rough successes, 7 crashes. Became very good at self-leveling mode and maxed out what can be done with limited angles of this mode. Any attempts at manual/3d mode lead to crashes though in about 5-10 minutes. Flying for 3 days at 11,500 feet during a camping trip in the mountains was a unique training experience (15,000 foot density altitude due to 75F temps)

Week 2. Transition into full manual/3d mode with successful flying, Tail-in hovering, Nose-in hovering. Figure 8s. More attempted flips and rolls collective control with recovery and some crashes.

Week 3. Huge flying breakthroughs: Excellent tail-in flips and rolls with chained flips and rolls with collective control (eye level altitude flips and rolls). Begun nose-in flips and rolls. Attempted inverted hovering at high altitude with room to recovery (very rudimentary inverted hovering for 5-20 seconds) with some crashes.

Week 3.25 Long flying sessions of 1-2 hours with minimal issues or crashes with mastered chained flips, rolls, stall/hammer turns, diagonal flips. Experimenting with chaotic corkscrews at high altitude.

Week 3.5. I bought a heli simulator (neXt) and controller to practice inverted flying, backwards flying, and the more advanced 3D manuevers. I can do some decent tail-in inverted hovering and ok flying in the simulator.

Conclusions:

It seems my flying RealFlight G2 some +23 years ago as a kid has helped tremendously in present day with my first real Helis and the training. It seems that many of the skills developed back then are still very available with relearning (though I've completely forgotten and am relearning inverted hovering via PC simulator)

The Goosky S1 is such a fun and incredible helicopter. It can take a beating and be repaired with parts or glue. It's small enough to take to a park and even accidentally slamming it into my leg, left a bruise and nothing more. Highly recommend!

RC helis vs RC cars

I need a hobby and thought of getting into RC. Now my question is why should I choose a heli over a car? There seems to be a few cons like:

- Seems like they are a bit more expensive

- More restrictions about where they can be used

- Harder for beginners

- Easier to damage than a car

- Fewer competitions

On the other hand it seems like:

- Skill ceiling is higher

- You can use simulators

- Flying is cool

Why did you choose helis over cars?

Best 100 size helicopter

I prefer smaller helicopters. I had an older Goosky S1 which had a lot of servo issues, so I switched to the S2, and it’s been great. However, I still feel more comfortable flying 100-size helis since they are easier to practice with and smash around.

What would you guys recommend?

Just wanted to remind everyone to be mindful of your batteries when putting things away for the winter. I have this old safe I store my batteries in. I even put my weed eater and lawnmower batteries in as well after the first freeze.

Throttle hold problem

So as I continue on this adventure with my Buddy 380, on Brain (Ikon) 2 and spektrum receiver, I have an issue that when I release throttle hold, the heli takes a good 10-15 seconds to start spooling. Luckily when I cut it again it cuts instantly. But does anyone know what might be causing that delay, I've messed with a bunch of settings in the transmitter and in the ikon program and can't seem to fix it.

Oh and I'm running Scorpion Tribunus 80A and Scorpion motor, I dont know if maybe the esc is the cause.

Thanks. I can provide videos or more in depth info if necessary.

Hello everyone! Not a rc enthusiast myself, but my father always has been. This weekend I stopped by an estate sale and found an rc helicopter and all the tools and such for only 80 dollars, the relative who was there said the person paid around 500 USD new so it seemed like a steal of a present for my dad!

So ive been googling all the part numbers ive found on the helicopter but im gonna be honest I have no clue what im doing lol.

Posting in here with the vauge hope somebody else has the same one and could tell me what this is so I can tell my dad when I gift it to him. Thank you so much in advance <3

Anyone recognize these 600n frames?

Bought a used Align 600 Nitro Pro that appears to have aftermarket main frames. This logo is cut into the frame sides and bottom plate.

The only difference I've noticed so far is how the engine mounts. The mount I have has been modified (previous owner made an OS 70SX fit). I'd like to find more info and hopefully some pics of this frame set and parts so I an remake the engine mount to fit a standard 50.

Is this a valid model for smooth-low rpm flying? And is it easy to build ? I'm going with

GDW DS595MG Mini Tail Servo

GDW DS290MG Digital Steel Micro Servo for cyclic

XDFly HPro 85A ESC

Steam 3220-1000KV Motor

Is there anything should be change with this?

What to look for in a kit?

I’m considering getting into RC Helis, and would really like to build one myself.

I don’t however know much about component selection; so I’d like to start with a kit of some sort. Something that comes pretty much completely unassembled and ideally a good platform for future tinkering and upgrades.

With that in mind, what sort of thing should I be looking for? I don’t really know what the terminology is, or whether what I’m looking for even really exists, or whether I just need to get hold of plans which include a part list.

Today I learned that birds of prey will 100% go after small helis (new to the sport)

Thumbnail

I just got into this sport a mere two weeks ago with 3x Goosky S1s (so I can crash while learning and then repair them later).

I've seen this giant hawk around the area, but I figured it was more of a very rare or impossible occurrence that they will go after something like a small goosky heli. WRONG.

I'm just completing a maneuver and pulled into a level hover and the hawk swoops in from above, talons out, massive wings spread. Mere inches away, the hawk aborts the attack, pulling up slightly. The talons were no more than 6 inches away.

I don't know if it was a predatory attack or an intimidation manuever.

The bird landed on a light post farther away as I landed the heli and took out the batteries and screamed out a WTF WAS THAT.

(For the sake of this bird, I will definitely be on the lookout for future sightings. I think the bird likes to perch and watch before swooping in for the kill or to intimidate, so I can be more aware and maybe even fly in a new area to avoid future incursions).

Have you guys encountered this?

Contemplating Getting Into Helis

Hi folks,

This is probably the n-th question of the type.

I tried quads and helis in Aerofly RC 10 and I kinda like helis. So far I fly exclusively fixed wing and heli always were that complicated enigmatic thing for the more hardcore audience. But with FBL systems, it seems less intimidating and in the sim, they feel controllable. After a short while, I managed to hover, fly in squares, and do some light flying around and landing. I routinely do coordinated turns in gliders, but it's quite a bit more involved for helis :)

I was looking for what a decent entry in the hobby might be.

I fly 3S and 4S on fixed wing gliders, so I have those at home. Wouldn't be the biggest investment to get another battery type, but I don't wanna overdo the collection. So if there are decent beginner helis in that voltage range, all the better.

I have a TX16S and a multiprotocol module, so protocols shouldn't be an issue.

I am not looking to do go hardcore 3d, as I have to master basic stuff first, so gentle flying around is fine. I just wanna avoid toy grade helis.

I researched a couple of options, just wanted to hear from y'all first. In the fixed wing world, there are a couple of defaults, I am sure these exist here as well. Low to mid three figure is kind of what I had in mind.

Re Horizon: I don't mind Horizon, just that they always come with their own annoying defaults for connectors and protocols that I'd have to emulate, so if anyone has done that with a Radiomaster setup, I'd appreciate advice.

Share Your 600 Setup!!

Greetings all.

I am considering upgrading my M6 to 8S (adding an 840kv motor with a 13T pinion) and thought I would ask here what everyone else flies. My M6 flies well on 6S (with an 1120kv motor and stock 12T pinion) using 600mm blades at around 2000RPM, but it feels a little underpowered. I would like to run 610mm blades at 2100 RPM and have it feel more balanced. Not that I am burning up the skies with powerful maneuvers, but I am actively practicing more and I want the heli to be ready when I do start doing more powerful stops.

What are you guys running on your 600-sized helis??

NOTE: I am not intending to loop 580-sized helis in to this request. There's a big difference in power requirements when going from 580-600, so I would like to only focus on those who have true 600-sized helis.

Brushless motor conversion

I have this toy-ish coaxial heli with burnt out brushed motors. I'd like to have a go at making it run again with some new, more advanced electronics and new brushless motors. I have no idea of the specs of the old ones, or what type of motor I'd have to get. I was hoping you all might have some ideas. I think they might have specific torque values and such because of that weird gearing system. Thanks..!

RC ERA C138 Issues – Main Rotor, Tail Rotor & Very Short Flight Time

I have an RC ERA C138 Bell 206, and I'm having a few issues:

- The main rotor sometimes doesn't work.

- Sometimes the tail rotor suddenly spins too fast automatically.

- The flight time is much shorter than expected.

I tested all three batteries:

- 1st battery: 6:38 approx.

- 2nd battery: 4:12 approx.

- 3rd battery: 4:00 approx.

The average flight time is only around 5 minutes per battery.

I have attached a video showing the main rotor issue.

Could this be a motor, ESC, or battery problem? Has anyone experienced the same issue with the C138?

Any help diagnosing the problem would be appreciated.

Blade 230 to 5 blade conversion?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi there,

I would like to build a 1:48 CH-53 (or something similar) and for that I would need a multi blade head heli. I know the real deal would be 6 blade but it seems like 5 blade is the only thing I can get for a somewhat reasonable price.

My idea was to get a cheap and used Blade 230s (or maybe an Infusion 180) and convert it with a Yuxiang 5 blade head (from the F119s). I feel like it should be possible to just get the 5 blade head set and the swashplate set and mount it on the Blade. As I´m not very experienced with custom heli conversions I feel like I may miss something.

Anyone here has the experience to tell me if my idea is completely ridiculous or if it is actually a possibility?

The Blade Infusion 180 would be interesting because of the smaller internals and the direct drive motor. Not sure though if moving from a 400mm 2 blade to a 437mm 5 blade is the brightest idea...

The Blade 230s would surely have enough power as in that case it would be a change from a 2 blade 536mm to a 5 blade 437mm rotor.

Why these 2 base helis? For both I have some pretty cheap used options to get them. Why the Yuxiang 5 blade head? Well it seems to be the only option in this size and its not too expensive.

Anyways, feel free to leave your thoughts and tips, any help is appreciated.

Thanks
