The Hard Drive is probably going out of business if these are real quotes from real large companies.

Funny thing, Epic Games (the creators of Unreal Engine) announced plans to completely rid Unreal of C++ in the future and replace it wit ha custom AI-friendly programming language. They also said they're gonna stop writing documentation, because you can just ask AI how to do thing instead. Epic is also one of the few companies that lets AI-generated product be sold along side normal ones, which included one guy submitting over four thousand AI generated 3D models per day to their asset store.
Epic games is so far within the pits of AI psychosis the light of God no longer shines over their heads.

u/Draconis_Firesworn 2d ago
On the documentation, I've tried asking ai about completely undocumented large codebases. You know what it isn't good at? That exact thing. Can't wait for all the how do i fix this error - method unreal.aiHallucinatedFunction() does not exist

u/Saragon4005 2d ago
What the fuck is an AI friendly programming language. We have LLMs which speak Python natively.
48
u/Vvix0 2d ago
Not exactly sure, but calling it "AI" gives Tim Sweeney a boner, so it's being pushed into production
7
u/Saragon4005 2d ago
Calling it AI is too difficult for our chief whiner which is a hell of a state to be in. I thought we couldn't get dumber after 2020 but here we are
8
u/Newe6000 2d ago
"AI friendly" is 100% marketing BS. LLM comprehension comes from seeing it in it's training data, so a new language is by definition not AI friendly.
It's a shame that's how they're advertising it, because it's actually a fascinating language designed by some genuinely smart people. It's a type safe scripting language with reactive programming paradigms and automatic state rollback on error.

u/Spongedog5 2d ago
I think the main problem is that the people running this part of Epic Games are so pompous and self-assured. The way they respond to pushback is by super-omega-doubling down because it is like they take it as a challenge and insult and don't believe that they could be wrong or fail.

u/chanonlim 2d ago
...are they going to make AI read through the source code every time I want to learn how to use a function or something?

Will be unironically better than current Epic launcher
You know you fucked up when people prefer buying games from competition than downloading for free in your giveaways

I actually choose to miss out on the free GTA V promo. Partly because I already had GTA V, but that alone wouldn’t be enough for me as I’d be able to technically resell the account later.
No, I just didn’t want to deal with the Epic Launcher again that much. It is so unintuitive and bogged down with ads and microtransactions, that I don’t care for it.

If you don't care about mods
Or user reviews, or community pages, or user profiles, or stat tracking, or cloud saves for most games, or linux support, or 50 other features that it doesn't have. Hell they only just figured out how to make a shopping cart.
It's fine to prefer EGL, and the bigger cut for devs is a valid reason to prefer it. But to dismiss valid criticism of it as "just Gabe cultists" is just silly.
2
u/rosuav 2d ago
The bigger cut for devs is basically the ONLY reason to prefer it. Steam charges you 30% and gives a metric ton of features that make people actually want to use the platform. Epic charges less, but gives you.... uhh.... not much. It's a commercial decision like choosing whether to put your restaurant in a street with huge foot traffic, or off in the middle of nowhere where the rent is lower.
Frankly, as a gamer, I am much more willing to buy something on Steam than nearly anywhere else, just because it's so much easier to keep things in the same place. Steam is a viable alternative to piracy. Epic isn't.

Relax, ML is just becoming 21st century alchemy is all.
Ignore the occasional chemical mishaps.
30
u/thicctak 2d ago
Nah, for it to be this century's alchemy, it would need some form of equivalent exchange, I ain't seeing that, lol.
48
u/RyanCargan 2d ago
No, no, like actual IRL alchemy.
It didn't produce what it claimed to either (gold/immortality).
But it did eventually kinda inspire some actual useful chemistry on the side, eventually... in like, a few centuries I think?
Except instead of chemistry, in this case it's compression.
18
u/ItsSadTimes 2d ago
But AI work was already doing alchemy level shit over a decade ago. Now a lot of those old labs have lost funding cause everyone just wants to cash in on the LLM stuff. Hell google put AlphaFold on KTLO and reassigned all their Nobel prize winning devs to Gemini. I mean they all quit, some went and found jobs at antrophic, but others just left the industry altogether.
1
u/RyanCargan 1d ago
No, that early AI work was, to our later AI craze, what Egyptian metallurgy was to the later alchemy craze.
Silicon Valley basically became our Alexandria for better or worse.
And what happened with AlphaFold mirrors similar trends where alchemists throughout history abandoned promising work for short-term gains or mysticism.
I'd write a list, but it's too long to post here lol
Maybe I should make a post about that somewhere else...

We get to vibe yoink companies' products like Adobe's entire software suite. Get to deshitify products we paid for etc.
Once you democratize software development so that 'anyone' can do it, then there's no longer moats that these companies can have.

Tim "I have a huge ego and I hate Steam" Sweeney should have probably waited with the steam comparisons until he had a working full release launcher instead of.. this.

if you wanted more reasons not to use that god forsaken platform then here you are i guess

u/mythridium 2d ago
I don't believe they even know what vibe coding is. Vibe coding is done by someone who doesn't know how to program, I don't believe for a second they built this without a single developer. What's more likely is they had developers using ai to create this, which is not vibe coding.
That doesn't mean this launcher isn't a train wreck, but it's not vibe coded.
2
u/idemockle 1d ago
The meaning has largely shifted among developers. It's common now for devs to say they're vibe coding when having agents write most of the code even if they are experienced.
10
u/myrdovh 2d ago
I couldn't believe this is real. They actually wrote that 🫠

I don't have it installed. Never have. How can I get it even further away from my computer in light of this?
3
u/MrDexter_ 2d ago
Bro these guys are just so incompetent like what were they thinking when they did this?? They will scare away normal users and only be friends with people with copilot on their brain.
I don't even want to touch that with a 10ft pole ew

Didn't know vibe coding was a selling point
And I'm a vibe coder, don't get me wrong
But as a selling point ?
8
u/Saragon4005 2d ago
Vibe coding is fun! Just tell the computer what you need, tell it of the glaring errors the code produces and the leaps of judgement it does, and never review the code! Then your coworkers can glance at your code, let their agents "read it" and you've pushed another 5k lines of code a day!
Nothing could ever go wrong from not reading the code. Computers do not make mistakes aside from the glaring ones you spot!

u/anoppinionatedbunny 2d ago
the bar for programming has been lowered so far that a stochastic machine can produce (barely) functional code. what do you mean "it's hard"???
-10
u/CtrlAltEngage 2d ago
Tell me you're not a programmer without telling me you're not a programmer
9
u/anoppinionatedbunny 2d ago
senior Java backend dev with 8 years experience, I have seen code becoming easier and easier to learn over the years. out of touch? maybe. not a programmer? get out of here
-3
u/CtrlAltEngage 2d ago
Why downplay the sophistication of ai or the challenges of programming then. Yes the idea of just guessing the next word is simple, but the results can be incredible. The challenge with using ai is the same as before, knowing how to make good software

u/thatoneblacknerd 2d ago
Eh. Backend is probably exactly the same. This is just a frontend reskin, I’m not completely against it.

Don't worry, you can buy a storefront template on the Unity Asset Store.

I was expected to fully vibe code a feature at work for the first time this week. I thought it wouldn't be that bad because I do use Ai like I used to use stack overflow and Google. I actually hated it lmao being completely lost in walls of code and always have to resort to ask the LLM what it did is annoying as fuck. I rather do it myself and slow.

u/zodireddit 1d ago
It's crazy how he thought this would go well. Who hears "programming is hard" and then puts all their trust in their products? Even if it's just most likely a cringe quirky comment. The one making this decision is so out of touch it's almost funny.
It doesn't even matter if the launcher is good, I obviously don't trust it with anything important.

I'm certainly not pro-AI or anti-AI, but with the stigma around vibe coding - isn't this a bit tone deaf? Fortnite <\3

u/CTProper 2d ago
Well assuming they are using the same backend infrastructure there shouldn't be anything to worry about here (duplicate transactions etc) also at least they are up-front about it. What public facing company isn't just vibe-coding all day these days?
7
u/LutimoDancer3459 2d ago
The client can still send wrong information to the backend...
-3
u/CTProper 2d ago
Assuming it’s just a client side change can you explain how a hardened backend would be at risk at all in this situation?
0
u/LutimoDancer3459 2d ago
The client send a payment request of 1000$. The user only wanted tp buy a 10$ game. The backend doesn't know that and processes the 1000$. How that? Maybe the client fucked up the . or , in the price tag or whatever.
0
u/CTProper 2d ago
That's not how this would be architected. The client would not be sending amounts to the backend

u/StatisticianSilent99 2d ago
Yay! A blatantly vibe coded product that handles credit card transactions!
