Meta/Discussion Audio Book 3

Hey Guys! Apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find an answer anywhere. Has there been a stated release date for the third audiobook? I powered through the first and second audiobooks so quickly. Also, has it been announced whether or not they are going to keep the same narrator? I'd be curious to hear your opinion on Amber Dekker's performance.

Also, I love that they are making the audio books now. Since it's been easily 10 years almost exactly since I first picked it up, I'm glad that it very much still holds up. Seriously one of the best book series ever made.

[G] Book 5 Spoilers Why were there no precautions against entering the Truce & Terms in bad faith? Spoiler

“To the Hells with your Terms,” the Red Axe said. “They’re expedience made law and just as ugly as that sounds. I renounce them, and for you fine people who think you have rights over me, I add this-”

She spat on the stone, offering up a hard smile.

“Are you requesting that the protections of the Terms be withdrawn from you?” the First Prince calmly asked.

“Whether she desires this now or not is irrelevant,” the White Knight said. “She agreed to the Terms as made understood to her by the Archer and had not renounced them when she committed the breaches for which she is now being charged.”

Rereading the part of the political complications around the trial against the Red Axe right now, I have to wonder how this ever became an issue to begin with.

Because the Red Axe explicitly renounced and quite literally spat on the rights and protections of the Truce & Terms, calling them an abomination and never truly having agreed to them or considered herself under their jurisdiction to begin with, as she merely signed onto them in order to get her revenge against the Wicked Enchanter and as per her own confession intending to thus knowingly and willingly take a swing against the Truce & Terms themselves that protected him.

That Hanno would not allow her to renounce those protections now out of principle, thus handing over jurisdiction to Cordelia and the Highest Assembly, because he doesn't deem it just and probably also because the other heroes would not accept it, is one thing.

What I don't understand, though, is why there wasn't an explicit mechanism in the Truce & Terms to begin with that'd allow a trial to determine that a Named had signed onto them in bad faith, which would then enable the High Officers to hand them over to whatever national authorities might otherwise apply, which would have neatly solved Cordelia's problem.

Because I actually cannot imagine that the heroes in particular wouldn't have pushed for such a clause, and hard, even if for no other reason than to have a precaution against the presumed general perfidy of the villains signing on – which would not even be entirely unwarranted, considering Catherine's own concerns about how she would need to ride her goblins hard on not offering fake surrenders when first discussing rules of engagement with Tariq.

And while I would obviously expect the villains to have pushed just as hard against it, because they would probably see it as a pretense that heroes might abuse for stripping them off their rights and protections whenever they feel like doing a purge, such fears could've been alleviated by making it so that this can only be done if sufficient evidence of signing onto the Truce & Terms in bad faith could be presented in a preemptive trial about the question, whereas all the High Officers would need to unanimously agree that this was indeed the case.

Ironically enough, I would have even expected the Mirror Knight, who fought hardest to keep the Red Axe alive, to have been one of the most ardent supporters of such a precaution, assuming it'd be needed for some villainous traitor, that would've subsequently allowed for the heroine to be handed over for trial to Procer.

But it was never even mentioned that such a seemingly obvious precaution had ever been attempted, let alone why it wouldn't have passed, which seems like a rather glaring oversight to me, as Catherine would've definitely let us partake in her frustrations about it and the irony of it in her private thoughts, at the very least.

Meta/Discussion PGTE RPG Design

I've been running an RPG campaign set in the PGTE universe and so ended up writing my own rules system (and a Forge VTT shell for it!) and wanted to share. There have been lots of playtesting tweaks so the rules reflect the most recent version.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/2ikzt5tie3m5vgxzev4bk/Traitorous-Campaign-Story-Guide-and-Stat-Sheet-V6.pdf?rlkey=e1qji8cu5qchr679ur4ixyaeb&dl=0

A couple notes before you do:

  • The campaign itself is set during Traitorous's Reign ("The Dread Emperor is missing, presumed scheming"), and the players are all supposed to be playing Villains. So a lot of the extra material is keyed around getting them into that headspace. (It's very hard to get a bunch of nice people to play Villains!). There's also a bit less info on Traitorous himself in there because they need to figure that sort of stuff out.
  • Most of what I have is from the Guide but some of it was made up, especially birth names of Dread Emperors. I was doing atmospheric stuff for players who haven't read the story and so wanted to get them in the space where they recognize that being a Sahelian is significant. The timeline is also wonky so don't expect to actually have the right Dread Emperors in there and not for Traitorous's reign.
  • The Combat rules are the ones I'm most proud of, because they worked really well and let everybody do things like gang up on NPCs, or let NPCs gang up on the players. The things that have been tweaked a lot are what the over/unders are. Right now it's listed as "5" but it may have to go down to 4 or 3 to make stuff happen faster.
  • I have zero specialized mechanics for "bullshit hero bonuses" or "Choir-assists".

At some point, I'd also love to run another short campaign with people who know the Guideverse a bit better than my players do. I think the basic rules of the RPG work really well for PGTE-style storytelling, both before and after the events of the story.

[G] Book 1 Spoilers I would like some help creating a summary of book 1

I convinced a friend of mine to start reading book 2 a couple of years after he finished book 1, and he is looking for a summary of what happened in book 1, so I tried to make one using my own memories, the chapter summaries someone posted somewhere, and some help with fellas on Discord.

If you feel like helping me, feel free to edit it yourself or add comments to it

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Rk0QVlEdnkVzfTWoMaaR8TyiU_FJsXNpV4sJzyfErgI/edit?usp=sharing

One thing I specifically don't remember and would like some clarifications on are the circumstances surrounding "Justification only matters to the just", which is a fairly important line to remember, especially for book 2

Hello hello. I'm finally getting around to reading Pale Lights after PGTE, and I was wondering if it had side stories like PGTE did? Maybe on the Patreon, or something? I couldn't find anything myself, so I wanted to be sure.

Meta/Discussion I finished Practical Guide and caught up on Pale Lights...now I need to fill that hole

Hey, finished practical guide and loved i and also caught up with Pale Lights (which I enjoyed, but not quite as much). Now I need something new to read and wonder if there's anything y'all would recommend.

When I look on places like Goodreads, it mainly compares it to books I don't feel are particularly similar(even if some like Mother of learning are very good), so coming to you guys to see what you recommend.

Fanfic Cracked Foundations (A Pale Lights Fanfiction) Spoiler

Hello all! For those of you not on the Discord, there's currently a fanwork drive for Pale Lights during the break and I decided to join in! I've been writing my first ever fanfiction called Cracked Foundations, exploring the fates of Bingwen and Yaotl after the events of Book 3, and their time in Scholomance.

I'm currently 5 Chapters in and get out new ones around every two weeks. I plan on going even when book 4 begins posting to make sure the story ends where I want it to. I've just mainly been posting links in the discord rather than here, but time to correct that!

Here's a link for your reading pleasure, hope you like it!

[G] Book 1 Spoilers (Rewrite spoilers) The rewrite has way more major changes than I had expected Spoiler

First of all, the rewrite is very good so far. The writing is vastly improved. When reading the web version I cringed quite a lot reading books 1 and 2, the rewrite is a completely different level. It’s great, I probably will read the entire thing. But I was just expecting a prose level change. The rewrite is introducing entirely new plot-lines and dangling threads. Even if there aren’t any more major changes, each if these is going to ripple down the line and require a great many small or large changes to the later books to keep it consistent.

I’m only halfway through book 1, but here’s what I’ve got so far:

-New active Callowan Villain, the Baron. Recurring scheming antagonist.
-New Praesi Named, the Alchemist and the Necromancer. Necromancer foreshadowed to be unstable and powerful
-The Haunted Scholar, Callowan Hero imprisoned in Summerholm
-Three Callowan ancient magic swords exist, including Duty, which the Baron owns 2/3 of and Catherine has 1/3
-The Peren Woods, new region of Callow filled with bandits and rebels
-The Doom Bells of Laure, dangling plotline. No clue what they are except they apparently weren’t destroyed in the Conquest

All of this stuff is going to need to be referenced and dealt with when Catherine is ruling Callow or be relevant later on. It looks like the entire series is going to be substantially different in the rewrite based on this. The later books will require less changes because the writing is better and the world-building more complete, but by then the ripple effects from the previous changes will cause noticeable differences anyway. Stuff like how in the original, when Catherine encounters the Hierarchs aspect that makes people go crazy, she thinks it’s like no aspect she’s ever seen before. Now instead, she will be reminded of how it’s very similar to the Baron’s aspect Foment. That kind of thing. A myriad small changes to her thoughts and actions to keep them consistent with the new world.

They’re good changes though. Callowan culture is a lot more fleshed out with a more distinct national identity, and Catherines relationship with the Calamities feels less forced, more close and more real.

A couple other things I thought were good:

-The First King of Callow is mentioned as pulling a magic sword from a stone, and it’s more explicit that Black unofficially runs Callow
-Black describes the world as “Objects in motion”, which is a recurring thematic phrase in book 6-7, which now looks like it will be a throughline of the entire series.
-Black killed a baby Fairfax personally during the Conquest
-They say “Piglets to rubies” instead of “Rubies to piglets”
-There’s a road out of Laure called Black’s Pecker
-Praes has an imperial cult in which previous dread emperors are venerated

Finally, a direct quote from Catherine’s thoughts:

“There was always some kind of harmless idiot in a band of five, like a cowardly rogue or a wizard apprentice that fucked everything up or, Gods forbid, a bard. I didn’t know if I had it in me to stab a bard, honestly. They were always so charmingly ineffective in the stories; it would have been like kicking a puppy.”

[G] Book 6 Spoilers Little thing I noticed Spoiler

Rereading the Guide and got to the Arsenal fight. The Hunted Magician, who is hunted by a prince of the Fae for reneging on a deal, is one of the key traitors in the battle. The aftermath of the battle leads to the Prince of Falling Leaves dead, meaning there’s no one left to collect on his oaths. There’s no one hunting him anymore-he’s just a Magician.

However, in the immediate aftermath, Catherine punishes him for his betrayal by fining him for the full cost of the damage of the Arsenal, to be paid thrice over, once to Callow, once to Procer, once to Levant, and all to be paid in enchanting and magical services. Catherine believes that he will accept this in exchange for the protection of such a position. I am not so sure. I think the minute that the war against the Dead King is over, the Hunted Magician would have run off and fled across Calernia, with the agents of the 3 most powerful nations chasing after him as well as bounty hunters and Named.

It’s cool to see the hand of Fate conspiring to keep him in his Role, done subtly enough that it’s never mentioned directly or noticed by Catherine that her entirely sensible, reasonable, freely made choice happens to put him right back into the position he had escaped from just days before

[G] Book 1 Spoilers Ending of Book 1, Help me understand Spoiler

So I just finished the plot with the lone swordsman plus rebels where Catherine becomes the squire. I'm having a really hard time understanding her actions during the hangings and directly after. So far she has been pretty thorough and thoughtful about her plans and figuring out what's going on. I just can't imagine she failed to miss that a direct consequence of her infiltrating the rebel cause to go after the hero would end up with them all being caught and executed. Like what did she think would happen here. She couldn't think literally one move beyond her actions, its not like it was 4-5 moves later, it was the direct consequence of her actions. She made that choice and many other choices that led to this. Okay, so she didn't really think it through and like Black said "she thought this was some game". I guess maybe, I can sort of buy that. She has already killed though many times at this point, it just seems like quite the stretch that she would fail to think one step further.

Another thing is, why is she so mad at the villians? If I have a loaded gun and point it at someone and then pull the trigger, would I then be mad at the gun for killing that person? It just seems insane to me. In the first book, we don't have many descriptions of the Black Knight, but what we do have is a definite thoroughness and practicality of consequences coming from him. I just don't get that either, she infiltrated that rebel group, she got them caught and yeah she was pushed or lead in that direction, but come on. Have some responsibility. I guess the author wants the divide between her and the current villians, but the author seems to really be stretching it here. My first instinct would be her blaming herself, but nah, all on everyone else. Then she's so much of a coward she can't even watch? Like she absolutely caused this, and she doesn't have the stones to watch the consequences of her actions. She's mad that someone forced her to watch what she did? I mean seriously....it just seems so out of character....to me it completely undoes the whole book.
