So this happened tonight around 8 PM, and I'm still smiling about it an hour later.
I was sitting in my car near a local park in the rain because I usually stop by there to feed a stray cat every night While sitting in my car, I looked across the street toward a building and noticed that a cleaning crew's work van had its side door completely wide open to the pouring rain. I’m familiar with the van because they clean the building every night. At first I thought maybe someone was in the van, so I minded my business for a few minutes. But it was really coming down, and it's not the greatest neighborhood. I started thinking about all the tools and expensive equipment that could be packed in the back and if someone walked by they could clear that van out in seconds. So I threw on a hoodie, braved the rain in my shorts and sandals, and walked across the street. No one was outside so I gently knocked on the window of the building where I could see cleaners working through the blinds.
Cue the funniest moment of the night: A little boy (probably around 8 or 9 years old) came to the door, looked out, locked eyes with me for half a second, got completely terrified , and sprinted backward into the building shouting for his mom and dad in Spanish. 😅 Poor kid! He definitely thought I was a spooky late night apparition. It doesn’t help that I wear heavy black eyeliner and dark lipstick LMAO .
His dad came rushing to the door. Through the language barrier (the parents didn't speak much English), I managed to tell him: "Hey, your van side door is wide open and it's pouring rain. I just wanted to let you know so nobody gets into your tools." The relief on his face was immediate. They were so, so grateful, and immediately rushed out to shut and lock the van. Turns out it’s a family cleaning crew, 🥹 a mom, dad, an older son (around 15), and the little guy who I jump scared. 🤣
When they finished up their job about 20-30 minutes later and came outside they even tried to offer me money to say thank you. I waved it off and told them, "No, no, it's fine! Just a neighbor looking out for a neighbor."
Even with the language barrier the kindness and appreciation were so clear. I’m sure they’ve probably wondered about me too since I’m usually in park late as a solo woman feeding a cat lol. It was such a sweet reminder that looking out for each other goes a long way. Hope everyone out there is staying warm and looking out for their people tonight! 💙
