Meta / Subreddit Related How this subreddit will operate on before and during Election Night

Hey y’all this is our first major federal election for this Subreddit so we figured we would lay out our plan for how we will handle the time leading up to election night and the night of.

This week: we are going to start making a midterms Megathread. We don’t want to discourage individual midterms posts, just try to limit them to truly ground breaking news. Keep polling news to the megathread.

The day of: To both prevent misinformation and to keep anxiety down, the day of the election we are effectively going to lock the sub before the results come in. It is the opinions of the mods that “the day of the election the hay is in the barn and nobody can really do anything but speculate on what’s going to happen. It is better to just take your mind off things and wait for the results”

Election night: During election night we will be having multiple megathreads: one for all House election results (there are 435 of them after all). We will be creating a new post for each Senate election result called. When it is all over we will have a big discussion thread. Again we will not be approving new posts until everything is mostly over except election results or unless BIG news comes out (Trump tries something unprecedented)

If you have any questions please let us know and we will be happy to answer any questions.

PLEASE VOTE!!!

As always, we need to continue voting, but the polls continue to favor Democrats. We have entered the point where even if the margin of error favors Republicans, Democrats still come in on top. But again, go out and vote, tell your friends and family to vote. Let's make this happen.

Optimistic Post Why Peaceful Protests Still Matter

After the recent No Kings Protests a few days ago, I've seen a numerous amount of leftists and/or doomers lamenting how because the protests are peaceful and aren't aggressive like in Paris that they're apparently pointless and only encouraging the status quo.

I don't think this is true though. For one thing, expecting America to protest and act the same way as France without taking into account population size differences, differences in culture, differences in militaries, differences in the size of the two countries, and the differences in how protests have typically been for both America and Paris.

Also, if the protests ended up more aggressive, that doesn't automatically mean that it will either end up creating change that way, nor does it mean that it couldn't make the general consensus for those not protesting more against a movement more than it would help it.

And on top of this, all of the people who always speak out against No Kings and similar protests never seem to be doing anything more than sitting in their homes comfortably posting on twitter. They don't protest because they don't see it as "enough", they are more likely than not against voting because they see both parties as the same, and they are the furthest ones to be pushing for their specific change they imagine would work in only their specific ways.

I actually saw someone recently who tried to say that the protests weren't the same because those at No Kings expected change to happen with the midterms and that "When democrats get in, they're just gonna go to brunch." Which I do understand being worried that people might tune out when Dems get in next, but imagining that everybody who is protesting will tune out completely and avoid looking at the existing problems I think is hyperbolic and undervalues just how much people want change now. And yes, that means change via voting and not the mythical revolution.

So many of these anti-action leftists claim that they're angry that change isn't being done "good" enough, and that people are just partying and none of this matters, but I think this completely ignores the fact that these protests still matter. Sure, they aren't as dramatic as rioting in the streets and all that, but they still matter and can influence people to vote and protest in the future as well, especially those who might otherwise feel threatened to go out and join a series of random acts of destruction with no actual goals in mind, which it would end up being if more violence was used.

Too many people who devalue the protests, even despite how much they do it for every single protest no matter how many there may be, are unwilling to actually do anything. They don't do the simple actions, and they aren't ever the first ones to be protesting in the ways they keep saying will work.

And even if they did, I doubt they would take into account the disabled or disenfranchised people who would be in danger in these circumstances and could only protest in peaceful conditions. Similar to the circumstances of the supposed "revolution", they never take into account the people who would be in danger immediately and imagine that those people are just throwaways, which they aren't. But it is exactly why peaceful protesting is the way forward, since it keeps in mind other circumstances and people, rather than just setting fires and expecting change immediately, only to end up being shocked when the right gains power from such actions because most people wouldn't be as willing to do any of that.

People have taken Paris and other countries protesting more aggressively as signs that any protest that isn't at the same exact energy isn't actually worth it, but it ignores the value that peaceful protests like No Kings holds for more people then themselves. For the disabled, the sick, the elderly, the disenfranchised, and the average person who is more down for actual protests rather than random mayhem.

I'm not saying that protests in other countries with different circumstances are wrong, but for the US, it isn't what is needed right now. It is a fantasy scenario for those who don't see any action as good enough for not producing immediate change. But like most things in the US, change doesn't happen overnight. It can be a slow, gradual, mind-numbingly dull series of events, but they are still producing change nonetheless. And whether you like it or not, No Kings still matters, just as every other peaceful protest does.

While it’s not good that their efforts haven’t yielded success yet, it’s important to note that Republicans in Congress (and not just ones that are retiring) are trying to get Trump to reverse course on Russia. It’s a reminder that autocrats like Trump are only fully successful when they’re popular or make popular decisions. This isn’t one of them.

Hi y'all. I've been a lurker on this sub for a bit now. I'm very concerned about this apparently proposed meeting between Trump, Xi, and Putin. What are the chances this goes anywhere substantial? I know we are already in a tripolar world, but the prospect of three aggressively divided spheres of influence, which is likely what Trump, Xi, and Putin would discuss, does not sound good in any way.

Optimistic Post Doomers Are Vague About The Midterms Because They Don't Have Proof

On social media I've grown accustomed to seeing the usual push for doomer fearmongering, especially since the election is a few weeks away and that voter suppression push won't enact itself. But one trend I've noticed lately is that a lot of them tend to be very vague in what they say specifically will happen. Yes they still point out the usual conspiracy theories like "Martial law after the midterms/Election will be rigged/The sky is falling", but when it comes to actually how this will happen, they will either give very vague, undescriptive, or generic reasonings how.

First of all, one person I saw tried to imply that martial law will be declared because Trump is "supposed to give a speech and Leavitt told people to watch it." Also no, this isn't an older video, it was for some reason made only a few hours before I'm writing this. But regardless, the actual reasoning is incredibly sloppy and doesn't even make it clear about when this supposed speech is, why Leavitt would be the one promoting it, why this plan would be announced so far in advance it doesn't make any sense, and how one figures that the speech connects to the wider conspiracy. The explanation is based off of fear and fear alone, but the kicker is that the post ends with the phrase "Strap in folks...", a phrase commonly used by doomers and one that tends to just imply "Bad stuff is coming".

Then there's a video from a man who takes the route of fearmongering about the aftermath of the election, rather than the event itself. "People are so focused on November 3rd they don't even realize what will happen from then to January 3rd", before ending with "We're about to be in a Banana republic due to all of this". Now, I do admit that the chance that the results will be denied is pretty likely unfortunately. But still, the evidence for the aftermath of the election leading to full on dictatorship, and somehow succeeding is just completely absent.

To make things even more exhausting, the amount of people in the comments of these posts adding on to the fearmongering is insane. So many imagining scenarios where an authoritarian takeover happens or where the election ends up so rigged that every seat ends up red by the end of election night. None of them using any sort of logic or reasoning in their predictions, just putting the responsibility of figuring that out to those reading.

There was actually someone who tried implying "No dictator has ever been removed through voting." And only one person replied to this with the evidence to the contrary: Hungary this year. You'd never guess which comment got more likes though.

But all of this is to point out that the all of these types of posts are incredibly vague and unclear regarding evidence for their claims because they have no evidence. There is never any sort of logic to how something gets from A-B, but there is also the tendency to call any naysayers "sheep" who aren't intelligent enough to see how bad thing will happen because reasons. All that they give is a blank expression to a camera while text proclaims how "Scary things are about to get, you guys don't know but it's about to be really bad, Germany called, they want their fascism back".

I mentioned this once before, but there tends to be a much more emotion based reasoning with doomers rather than using logistics, feasibility, or any actual evidence for their claims. For every claim about the ballroom bunker, there isn't any focus on why that couldn't actually get finished before 2029, and for every claim about martial law being imminent, they don't take into consideration the size of the country, the scope of such an operation, and the lack of people to make it happen.

Saw this, didn't want to look through comments on r/worldnews because past experience says that is unwise.

So what should I take from Trump to push this close to the midterms? I have no idea what he is going to do and what is going to happen with Ukraine. I know Trump has favored Russia before but are we really going to see Trump support Russia's war effort?

Optimistic Post Why I Don't Think That Russia Will Be The End Of American Democracy

I've seen a lot of people discussing the relation of Russia and the US in the last few days. With people mentioning that Data center deal between the two close to the midterms, with some even implying that the proximity of this deal and the midterms could mean potential interference, or with some Russians on Twitter implying that Russia and the US are allies against Europe, there's been a lot of fear that developments between the two nations could in fact lead to Russia going against other European countries or more damage to democracy in the US. I, however, don't feel that worried about this.

Now sure, I do get why some would focus on this. Russia's conflict with Ukraine has been going on for so long and yet there continues to be hints of aggression toward other European countries. But I also want people to focus their fears for this element of it on just how long Ukraine has been going for Russia. The conflict was supposed to last three days and has instead taken years and Russia's economy and military is in a not great position now compared to then. The idea that any sort of conflict could begin with another country is just not feasible for them given the circumstances.

And as for the US helping Russia in this sort of thing, even though the sanctions were supposedly lifted via executive order (I still don't know if that won't just get reversed via courts), and this new data center deal being announced, the actual support for Russia in the US isn't high, even among the right. The actual numbers in voting for the sanctions were really high for both parties. And starting another conflict at all would have disastrously low support.

As for the chance of interfering in elections, I feel like the most likely avenue would just be bot farms rather than any direct meddling. So far there hasn't been any evidence of interference to the level of full on rigging from anyone. However, bots are notorious for voter suppression and have been very apparent in the midterms already. So the chance that there could be more of them in the coming weeks isn't out of question. I also imagine that this deal could very well just be to try to lower oil prices before the midterms or something similar given the lack of support on oil prices right now, I don't think it's good to worry about something like this given the lack of information we have at hand since it just ends up with us in a panic over something much more simple.

So Trump feels like he's been doubling down on buddying up with Putin as of late, with the observations I see being that he's trying to fix the problems with fuel prices caused by his war with Iran, as opposed to just admitting defeat.

How concerned should I be about this? I know Russia's invasion of Ukraine is going to fail, and have dire consequences for both countries, but I worry that Trump buddying up with the fascists is going to keep prolonging it. Which I am certain is going to make the consequences even worse.
