I'd ask that when listening to both of these that you keep in mind the conditions of their recording. This is Ado fully warmed up, adrenaline running, middle of a live show. For Moka, it's a studio version under pretty perfect sound conditions, with a light backing track, and probably some processing (not a negative. It is what it is).

Second: This is on no way tearing down Moka, her astounding range and ability to tweak notes, nor her ability to mimick vocals. She's fabulous. I'm more than willing to say she's the most talented vocalist in the group--and I say that as a fan who walked by Rinka and damn near passed out. I have no favorites here. They're all great.

But the videos do give us a really good grasp of why Ado is probably the best damned vocalist in the world right now, how Moka is clearly modeling herself after her mentor. We've heard and seen it in other solo covers and even in BTS recordings where Ado is coursecorrecting the girls during sessions. Moka most closely resembles Ado and her range and flexibility.

But man... Ado is just something else.

The videos are fascinating to compare, especially for a few things. First, while neither girl's English is what I would call strong, Moka clearly has the better grasp of it and is trying really hard to pronounce words not just in English, but in western style English. She's also doing a fanatic job of mimicking Sia, her style, and inserting a twank and some tone into the cover, whereas Ado just powers through the cover with her sheer Adoness.

But that also highlights the biggest difference. Ado covering this is an Ado cover. It's all her. For Moka, this is her mimicking something between Ado and Sia. Using both of them, but honestly, not much of herself. And she does that incredibly well--it shows she knows the song. She even went out of her way to correct the way her vowels come out singing words like 'fly', 'three', and even chandelier.

But she lacks the ability to shape her highest notes fully at their peak. The high notes on the chorus kind of go up, and up, and then flatten, whereas Ado just keeps pushing the shape of those notes like a bell curve almost. Part of that might be the way Moka is shaping the notes with her mouth, and it might also be because she's a more natural higher pitch. It's great, but it's not what Ado does.

Because nobody else does what Ado does.

I think part of it is Ado having superior breath control. Her breathing on the song is so different from where Moka is finding the spaces to inhale. Part of that is experience, surely.

And that's the thing. Moka is young. She has a ton of raw power and clearly has motivation. It's tough to intentionally cover a song like this that you know went viral because your mentor, the biggest artist in your country, did it. But like the Little Mermaid cover, it just showa so much promise and potential for Moka and, highlights why she is probably the only real potential solo artist of the group.

Once again, I say that as a Rinka stan. Don't hurt me.

Regardless, I hope this means we keep getting covers like this and, next time they're on your, their solo sections feature more difficult choices. Theyve all grown so much since then (especially Mona, dear God. Her voice is so great compared to two years ago).
