[Yohe] Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust say itâs not panic time for the Penguins despite another loss
DENVER â The game began like it did seven months ago in Denver, as an Evgeni Malkin highlight-reel goal helped the Pittsburgh Penguins take an early lead.
Then, it was if the Penguins realized this is a new season. The magic evident on so many occasions last season, including at Ball Arena, was nowhere to be found after the Penguins landed the first couple of punches.
The Colorado Avalanche overwhelmed the visitors in a second surge, paving the way to a 5-2 victory over a Penguins team that is 0-2 on this road trip and facing a daunting task in less than 24 hours in Las Vegas.
Malkin scored an early gem and then Sidney Crosby surpassed Joe Thornton for No. 7 on the NHLâs all-time assist list by feathering a beauty of a pass to Bryan Rust, who made it 2-0.
The Avalanche then decided that was enough, and led by a dynamic Nathan MacKinnon performance, left the Penguins in the dust.
After an outstanding first period, the Penguins were plagued by the problems that have been evident with concerning regularity in the seasonâs first eight games.
Two of their leaders, however, insisted after the game that now isnât the time to panic.
âNo,â Rust said in a very direct manner. âItâs eight games into the season. There are areas where we quickly need to get better. But I wouldnât say the red light is flashing. We just need to be better.â
