Beaver attendance
Came across this tidbit in the WW today, and learned there is a term for the fans that buy tickets and don't show, melt. Looking at the stands yesterday, and given the success this season, I'm guessing our melt will be less this season. Article also covers Ducks and Huskies numbers.

Post-Week 7 Power Rankings
How do you rank the schools after Week 7?
These are my updated power rankings:
- Boise State
- Oregon State
- Texas State (+2)
- Fresno State (-1)
- San Diego State (+1)
- Colorado State (-2)
- Utah State
- Washington State
One thing to note about my power rankings is that I try to take the entire season into account, instead of just basing it on one week.
This was significantly harder than in previous weeks. I really struggled with Fresno State vs. Texas State, because Fresno State has been competitive in their games and as an Oregon State fan, I honestly feel more threatened by Fresno State. However, I cannot ignore that Fresno State only averaged 5.6 Y/P and 3.4 Y/R against SDSU, while giving up 204 rushing yards. Comparing that with Texas State having an absurd 504 rushing yards along with 8 TDs on the ground against Colorado State (I believe SDSU's defense is better than Colorado State's, but there is such a gap here), I have to put Texas State above. But those two schools are so close.
I can't figure out San Diego State for the life of me. I genuinely don't believe this is a good team, but I can't ignore that they are 2-1 in Pac-12 play against two of the top 4 teams in the conference.
Washington State put up a fight against OSU in the second half and they may have found a gem in QB Owen Eshelman. However, considering they lost to Utah State, I have to give Utah State a slight edge.
Thoughts?

Mater Dei (CA) standout Gavin Honore commits to Oregon State
Oregon State filled a recent opening at receiver with its highest-ranked recruit in the class of 2027.
Gavin Honore, a three-star receiver out of California powerhouse Mater Dei, committed to OSU on Saturday. Honore was previously committed to Georgia and held offers from Michigan, Kentucky and Vanderbilt, among others.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Honore has 23 catches for 307 yards and two touchdowns in seven games this season at Mater Dei.
Ranked No. 806 overall and No. 100 among receivers in the 247Sports Composite, Honore is the top-ranked commitment in OSU’s 2027 recruiting class, which is back to 19 commitments. The group is ranked 69th overall and third in the Pac-12 in the 247Sports Composite.

AI TOP 25 POLL
Discussion: Don't yell at me. I simply asked AI to generate a top 25 FBS poll at the end of Week 8. Instructed it to use the following metrics: SOS, SOR, and new metric SOC (Strength of Conference), to be used by CFP committee. Win/Loss records and also to use FPI all column metrics and base all teams on the teams they have played to date. I didn't fine tune to what percentages to base these metrics on, because I have no idea. Below is what it gave me.
I thought it was better than the other AP polls I see. Add your comments.
Here is the complete, fully updated Top 25 college football ranking after Week 8, evaluated directly through the collective metrics of Strength of Schedule (SOS), Football Power Index (FPI), Strength of Conference (SOC), Strength of Record (SOR), and Overall Win/Loss Records:
Top 25 Rankings via Combined SOS, FPI, SOC, SOR, and W/L Metrics
| Rank | Team | Record | Conference | Positional Justification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ohio State | 6–1 | Big Ten | Apex Predictor: Claims the top spot after handing undefeated Indiana its first loss of the season. Holds the nation's most dominant forward-facing FPI rating and elite game-control scores. |
| 2 | BYU | 6–0 | Big 12 | Marquee Resume: Earns the premium runner-up spot by virtue of a flawless record anchored by a definitive, high-profile victory over Notre Dame today. |
| 3 | Miami | 6–0 | ACC | Unblemished Baseline: One of the final elite, undefeated power-conference teams left standing completely unscathed after a weekend of historical top-10 carnage. |
| 4 | Tennessee | 6–1 | SEC | Signature Win: Vaults directly into the top five after logging the single biggest resume win of the weekend by taking down powerhouse Alabama. |
| 5 | Indiana | 6–1 | Big Ten | High-Floor Loss: Suffered its first defeat to top-ranked Ohio State, but advanced Strength of Record (SOR) and efficiency data heavily cushion the blow to preserve its top-5 standing. |
| 6 | UCLA | 6–0 | Big Ten | Passive Ascent: Maximizes its unblemished record by rising systematically up the ladder as the top-tier programs collapsed all around them over the weekend. |
| 7 | Kentucky | 6–1 | SEC | SEC Attrition Beneficiary: Climbs steadily into the elite tier by taking care of business while its premium conference peers suffered cascading losses. |
| 8 | Georgia | 6–1 | SEC | Foundational Cushion: Slipped from the absolute driver's seat due to an unexpected SEC defeat today, but their pre-existing #1 analytical foundation keeps them locked just ahead of Notre Dame. |
| 9 | Notre Dame | 5–1 | Independent | Capped Ceiling: Boasts high analytical efficiency baselines, but the head-to-head loss to BYU caps their immediate vertical ceiling right below the former top-ranked Bulldogs. |
| 10 | Texas Tech | 6–0 | Big 12 | Conference Frontrunner: Secures a top-10 position on the back of an unblemished overall record and elite standing in the Big 12 race. |
| 11 | Alabama | 5–2 | SEC | Head-to-Head Penalty: Dropped out of the top tier after being penalized directly by the game-ending metrics of their loss at Tennessee. |
| 12 | Utah | 6–0 | Big 12 | Undefeated Rise: Leverage a perfect 6–0 record to plant a firm flag in the top half of the poll as a premium Big 12 frontrunner. |
| 13 | Iowa | 6–1 | Big Ten | Defensive Anchor: Maintained a rock-solid metric platform owing to a nationally elite defensive efficiency tier that heavily outweighs minor offensive flaws. |
| 14 | Wake Forest | 6–1 | ACC | Adjusted Ceiling: Slides below Utah to accommodate the undefeated profile, but remains highly ranked following the weekend's high-profile power-conference carnage. |
| 15 | Houston | 6–1 | Big 12 | Win-Volume Surge: Breaks away from the chaotic two-loss middle pack, using its strong 6–1 record to anchor a new baseline inside the top 15. |
| 16 | Florida | 5–2 | SEC | Metric Power Surge: Vaults to the top of this tier. Their 27–24 road victory over Texas gives them a top-10 resume anchor, backed by a grueling SEC strength of schedule. |
| 17 | Texas | 4–2 | SEC | Schedule Baseline Cushion: Despite the head-to-head loss to Florida, Texas benefits from a highly rated FPI efficiency model and a premium SOS metric that ranks near the top of the nation. |
| 18 | Northwestern | 5–1 | Big Ten | Conference Premium: Accommodates high-profile SEC movements, remaining heavily supported by a high Big Ten conference weight adjustment. |
| 19 | Boise State | 5–1 | Pac-12 | Efficiency vs. Schedule: Holds its 5–1 position coming off a bye week. While their FPI numbers are dominant, their baseline schedule lacks the high-profile conference metric weight possessed by SEC teams. |
| 20 | SMU | 5–1 | ACC | Tucked Ranking: Holds steady right behind the premium tier. Their win against Virginia keeps them solid at 5–1, but the ACC's overall conference strength metric sits slightly below the Big Ten/SEC curves. |
| 21 | Wisconsin | 5–2 | Big Ten | Stable Flow: Positioned firmly within the two-loss cluster, backed by standard Big Ten opponent parameters. |
| 22 | USC | 5–2 | Big Ten | Analytical Safety Net: Maintained near the bottom purely by a high-efficiency FPI baseline that protects them from dropping out entirely. |
| 23 | LSU | 5–2 | SEC | Resume Injector: Holds its ground in the Top 25 after proving their trajectory with a clear conference win over Mississippi State earlier today. |
| 24 | UTSA | 6–1 | AAC | Record Floor Entry: Enters the rankings on strong win volume. A signature matchup against Texas provides a higher structural SOS floor than lower mid-majors, keeping them just ahead of unblemished programs. |
| 25 | James Madison | 7–0 | Sun Belt | Schedule Anchor: Sinks to the absolute bottom line of the poll; kept ranked purely by its unblemished 7–0 record but heavily punished by a weak conference and a low Strength of Schedule (SOS). |
Would you like to evaluate how this unified metric profile impacts the projected College Football Playoff bracket seeding for the new top four conference leaders?

The other side of Realignment and Rivalries
My college football nite cap this week is the Fresno State - San Diego State and the announcers keep talking about this being a historical rivalry.
There's been endless posts about the Apple Cup and the Civil War being victims of the conference realignment era and those discussions have me wondering about ruined rivalries from the perspective of the newcomers to the PAC-12
Was the rivalry game you left behind a big deal for the fanbase or just a fun historical fact?
Do you feel the loss of tradition was worth it to join or just an unfortunate bit of collateral damage in an attempt to maintain or grow your football brand?

Video of Former OSU coach Trent Bray warmly embracing his former OSU players after tonight’s OSU-WSU game. Bray was fired last year after starting 0-7. He’s now the Defensive Coordinate at Washington State
x.comStill love Bray even though things didn’t work out. He’s still a really talented DC. Wazzu tn was at the most well organized defense we’ve faced since Tech. He was a hot upcoming coordinator when Smith left, he just clearly needed more time to develop as a coach. He had only been elevated to DC 2 years earlier. He took over for Smiths first DC at OSU. Smith fired the other DC (can’t remember who) and Trent was elevated from position coach, I think LB?
He helped elevate the beaver defense to finish that season and became permanent DC. Elevated smiths teams to a new level with solid defense that helped get them in the top 25…
Smith left, he took over, was just still to green and honestly doesn’t have the personality to be a HC - at least not yet. Shep brings so much energy and Bray always was walking around stoic and intense. But overall great guy that stuck by the programs during our darkest hour…
