BV School SPED funding red signs - South OP

I wasn't able to snap a picture this morning but noticed a few red signs w/ white lettering in the medians around South OP that are pointing to larger political signs, they say something along the lines of "Won't fully fund BV Sped >> (pointing to the anti education candidate)" does anyone know who is responsible for these signs? I'd love to throw some cash their way for more of them, and support the cause in any other way I can!

Overland Park just cut plate data retention from a year to 30 days. The next chief could undo it without a vote.

I want to start off by giving credit where its due. On October 14, OPPD presented an updated license plate reader (ALPR) policy to the Council's Public Safety Committee, and it's one of the stronger local policies we've seen. That's largely Chief Doreen Jokerst's doing. Two years into the job, she cut retention, sought outside input (the ACLU of Kansas called the result a significant step forward), and asked the vendor to build an alert for repeated searches of the same plate after seeing how misuse cases played out nationally. She also told the committee she'd never expand the system without making sure everyone understands what's happening. She's earned real goodwill. The question is what happens after her.

What changed:

- Plate data is now kept 30 days (it was a year, and two years before 2026)

- Facial recognition is prohibited

- Every search needs a case number and a specific reason. "Investigation" or "routine patrol" doesn't count.

- Free speech and religious activity can't be monitored

- Sharing with other agencies is paused until formal agreements are written

- Misuse gets referred for discipline, and to the DA if it's criminal

- A public dashboard and an alert for repeated searches of the same plate are coming in 2027

The department also shared real OP cases where plate readers helped, including finding a missing person. Useful tools tend to grow. Asked whether she wants to expand coverage, the Chief said, "I think eventually." That's exactly why the rules should be set now.

So what's the problem?

All of this lives in internal department policy. Retention changed twice this year, both times in the right direction, and the Council voted on neither. Today's rules are good because today's chief chose them.

A few other gaps:

- The department audits itself. When Seattle's Inspector General reviewed police searches on Axon, the same platform OP uses, about 47% of 2025 searches had no reason given.

- Shared data may not stay protected. Once our data goes to another agency, our 30-day limit only protects our own copy.

- Not every camera follows these rules. Police can search privately owned Flock cameras around the city, and where those cameras go and how long they keep data is up to the businesses that own them.

- Residents can't check. Kansas law lets police withhold plate data. If you suspect an officer you used to date is searching your plate, your only option is filing a complaint with the same department.

We've put together a proposal to make these rules last by putting them in city ordinance: Council approval for changes, independent review of the search logs, minimum standards for anyone OP shares data with, and public reporting on how the systems are used. It doesn't turn anything off. It locks in what Chief Jokerst got right.

Full breakdown: https://opvoice.org/news/2026/alpr-policy-update/

Our proposal: https://opvoice.org/issues/resident-data/proposal/

Curious where people land on this. Should rules like these be set by the Council, or is department policy enough?

Blue Valley Schools - Who has insights into funding?

Feels like we're about to see a variety of programs cut. Anyone have any insights into local rationale why this is happening and/or state reasons? I know one of the big contentions is SPED funding, but wondering who has a clearer picture of who's doing what.

Edit:
Just to expand a little bit, that I'm really confused how we got to this point. Blue Valley Schools are a point of pride for just about anyone I talk to here. One of the reasons we moved to BV is to take advantage of the awesome programs. It just seems crazy with the way the area has grown in the past 10 years that we need to make cuts.

Drinking Chocolate in OP?

Okay so this is NOT hot cocoa, hot cocoa is made with water or milk and has the consistency of what it's made of.

I'm on the quest for finding European Drinking chocolate which is made with whole milk and has the consistency of a ultra thick melted chocolate. You could say you're almost drinking a chocolate bar.

Any recommendations on where I might be able to find this? Thank you!

THE SCOUT @ Glenwood Theater

Hello Overland Park!

I have not been to visit you but I've been to Kansas City many times and have family there, so I suppose I've come quite close. Wanted to reach out ever-so-briefly because a movie I produced is opening at the Glenwood Theater starting TOMORROW!

The film is THE SCOUT and it was written/directed by Paula González-Nasser. It follows a day in the life of a NY television location scout as she photographs the homes and businesses across the city, stepping into their private lives while juggling the needs of her erratic employers. Paula worked as a location scout for many years in NY, and the film stems from that experience - if you like slice-of-life films, as it were, we think you'll like this one.

This is a VERY small movie (we made it with ten people in ten days) without much of a marketing budget, so I'm just trying to find a few ways to get the word out there about the movie to those who likely don't know it exists, and to support the Glenwood showings (as they've been very kind to allow us to screen there).

If you're curious about it you can read or listen to Paula talk about the film to The New York Times, on NPR, or on YouTube. The film is a New York Times Critic's Pick - hope you'll like the movie as well if you decide to check it out! Thanks for letting me drop word here.

Doggy daycare recommendations

We have a one 1/2-year-old poodle mix who is very high energy and sweet. She loves to play with all dogs. She has been a bear to potty train, and the doggy daycare we have used occasionally apparently doesn’t have a permit to take dogs outside to pee, so they just let them pee on the floor. We notice a pretty extreme regression when she comes back.

Does anyone have a doggy daycare they love in the Overland Park area? Specifically that has an outdoor area for dogs to potty?!

Caribou Coffee

I traveled to Minnesota last month and tried Caribou Coffee for the first time, and absolutely loved it! I was pleasantly surprised to find out we have a location at 135th & Antioch, so I stopped by today. Sadly, there was hardly anyone there. 🥲
I really hope this location gets more business and doesn’t end up closing. It would be a shame to lose such a great coffee spot! ☕

Small Business Upgrades

I own a small business in south OP and am looking for someone to tint our front window. We are in a strip mall so it’s one large window and a glass door. I’m also interested in seeing if there’s someone who can insulate our dropped ceiling. If you have any recommendations, that would be appreciated.

Why is it called Kansas?

When explorers came upon the plains, they called the area Kanzas Territory, meaning it was controlled by the Kanza, or Kaw, people.

The territory stretched into present day Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. It was 20,000,000 acres (31,250 square miles), about the size of South Carolina.

The tribe was about 1,500 strong - men, women and children.

Audi Battery Replacement Rec's

Hello all,

TL:DR, looking for a reputable garage that could replace my wife's Audi car battery that won't cost an arm and a leg.

My wife has a 2020 Audi Q3 and while getting an oil change at one of the Valvoline instant oil change locations, she was told by the technician that her battery charge was running severely low and would likely need a new battery soon. She passed on their offer because she assumed it was something we could do at home. However, after doing some research, it appears that it's not as easy as just getting a new battery and swapping it in. Apparently, you need a specific tool that can reset the Audi computer to properly complete the install. I confirmed this with our old technician back in Denver.

I know there are a few Audi dealerships in the KC area, but I assume they're going to charge some pretty high shop rates for this work and it will likely sit until they work through the more priority repairs. So my question is, does anyone know of a reputable shop in the OP/KC area that works on Audi's and could sell us & perform the battery replacement on her 2020 Audi Q3?

Self-Care/Girls Day Itinerary

Hi all,

My birthday is coming up and I’m taking the day off to relax & reset. I’ll be 28, and I’m local for 3-4 spots to hit before catching dinner (probably KC Ramen 🤷‍♀️) with fiancé.

I like baking, reading, crafting, and spending money!!! It would be nice to get a fancy facial or spa treatment, too. I’m willing to start early in the morning so I can visit multiple places! I’m not a huge alcohol drinker so bars are probably a no go.

If you’ve got breakfast/lunch suggestions, or fun, relaxing activities, let me know!
