Policy / Practice RN INTERVIEW NEUROLOGY/STROKE UNIT

Hello everyone,

I have an interview RN at The Ottawa Hospital for positions in the Neurology/Neurovascular, Stroke, and Family Medicine units. I don’t have any Canadian experience, and this will be my first interview in Canada.

Could anyone who has interviewed for these units or has experience working there please share some advice? What kinds of questions should I expect? Do I need to have in-depth clinical knowledge and know the medications commonly used in these units?

I would really appreciate any tips or advice. Thank you so much!

Nursing School Career pivot advice

Hello All!

I'm considering potential healthcare careers to pivot to and nursing (RN) was one career I'm heavily considering. I'd ideally like to work in public health or primary care. For context, I'm F(30) who has worked in sustainability across non-profits and corporate for almost 7 years. I have a Masters in Environmental Studies and a Bachelors in Animal Biology. I've realized corporate may not be the best fit for me and I have always gravitated to jobs where I can work with people and provide care. I was potentially interested in applying to an accelerated nursing program but realized many programs require human physiology and human anatomy. I took a lot of animal health and anatomy but unfortunately knowing the anatomy of animals does not transfer here 😂

Q1: I was wondering if anyone has made a similar career pivot but needed to top up on university level courses to satisfy the requirements to apply.
Q2: Can I simply take the human physiology and anatomy courses or do they expect those courses to be completed in a full time semester?

Nursing School Research Study: Looking to recruit final year nursing students my PhD work on social media

Post image
2 Upvotes

My work is looking to explore how social media informs nursing students’ understanding and expectation of the profession and how it may impact their initial transition to practice experiences.

Final-year BScN students (with no previous as a practical nurse) are invited to participate. If you are perhaps precepting or working with a final-year nursing student in your clinical area, it would be great if you considered sharing this research with
them! Link to the initial eligibility questionnaire.

Survey / Study REx-PN Exam Tips and Advice?

Hi everyone! I’m currently preparing for my REx-PN exam and feeling a bit overwhelmed.
I’ve been using NurseAchieve, Simple Nursing, and Dr. Sharon/Mark Klimek videos.

For those who recently passed, what resources helped you the most? How similar was the actual exam to NurseAchieve? Any tips on what topics to focus on or how to approach the questions?

I would really appreciate any advice or tips. Thank you! 😊

Nursing School RPN to RN bridging.. how difficult did you find the NCLEX-RN?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to start bridging from RPN to RN sometime next year and would love to hear from those who have completed the bridge and successfully passed the NCLEX-RN

I graduated from my RPN program with a 3.6 GPA and passed the REx-PN on my first attempt with 150 questions. I was really nervous writing it, but thankfully I passed!

I really want to earn my nursing degree because my goal is to work in the United States and have access to higher paying opportunities.

How difficult did you find the NCLEX-RN compared to the REx-PN? Did you feel the bridging program prepared you well, and what helped you most when studying?

I’d appreciate any experiences or advice! 😊

Nursing School NPs - AHAD1 inquiry

Hi,
I am a student in the Ontario Nurse Practitioner Consortium. I was inquiring into the midterm style questions they may ask if there’s anyone who has completed the course before?
Seriously struggling to finalize what to study and how since they don’t really guide you at all into what’s important over other things. Been focusing a lot on conditions and identifying, management and diagnosis but everything is so self directed and they give zero information at all other than 50MCQ on hundreds of topics, links, textbook chapters.
Anyone out there that can help or recall?

Thanks,

An RN and hopefully NP one day

Venting Not sure on what I should do

Hi, I'm a first year nursing student. This is a mix of a rant and asking for advice. I don't use reddit too much, so please bear with me.

I was essentially forced into nursing by my parents, telling me that nursing was an amazing program, and that it's just hard to get into while being an easy program (turns out, its definitely one of the most demanding programs out there). Later in my grade 12 year when I was considering other programs, they told me that I either study this or get disowned. I didn't consider being disowned or getting on their bad side, so I agreed.

I'm now studying something I frankly have no passion or interest in. It's already tiring and its only going to get worse. I can't imagine myself as a hospital nurse. I stayed in my hometown to save money as well, and I hate it here so much. I thought that if I could stay here for a year and apply to UofT Bloomberg then I could make it out and hopefully improve my social life at least. But now I don't know if I'll have enough for the admission requirements or if I'll make it to then.

I brought up changing my program and going somewhere else for uni, but because my family is heavily patriarchal, my dad decides everything and he would definitely wouldn't approve (despite my mom slowly agreeing with me to transfer). I also deal with mental issues that I am trying to get help for, but I'm somewhat confident that this situation isn't helping whatsoever.

I know I could maybe apply to McMaster Nursing to switch up the social life and hope for the best (I think my father would be fine with that) or secretly apply to uni again using my grade 12 marks (interested in UW GDBA), but that invokes the wrath of the patriarchy. I just feel hopeless about my future and feel nothing but doom. Any advice/tips for what to do or what I shouldn't do?

General non job search discussion Clinical Extern Interview!

Hey hey!

I was recently offered an interview for a clinical extern position in the Mother & Baby Unit, and I’m so excited! This has genuinely been my dream unit and a huge part of the reason I wanted to become a nurse in the first place 🥹❤️.

I was wondering if any L&D, postpartum, or Mother & Baby nurses (or nursing students who have interviewed for similar positions) could share some insight into the types of scenario-based questions I might be asked.

I’m especially curious about scenarios involving teamwork, prioritization, patient safety, communication with patients and families, or situations that could arise on the unit.

I know every hospital and interview is different, but I’d really appreciate any advice, examples of the types of scenarios to prepare for, or tips on how to approach these questions as a student nurse applying for a clinical extern position!

Thank you so much 💕

General non job search discussion Requesting unpaid LOA

Im a clinical nurse specialist in a small team at our hospital, we are part of ONA. Im only entitled to 3 weeks vacation as i only started with the org for 2 years.
Summer 2027- my sister is gonna have a wedding in Asia and I need at least 2.5 weeks off. My husband already planned another vacation this January that will deplete and owe a banked vacation. This vacation is non negotiable as we paid for it already.
My question is: do any nurses have experience of getting their unpaid LOA approved or not bec of a milestone celebration? What did you do in the event that it was not approved? Go to ONA? I know theres a provision of unpaid LOA in the bargaining agreement, but not sure how people go about it.
I cannot miss my sister’s wedding and not sure if quitting just because of this is very smart.
Any advice?

Job Search Discussion How hard is it to get into corrections as an RN in Ontario?

I would really like to get into corrections preferably psych but would be open to general RN positions in a correctional facility as well. I only have medsurge experience but I’m not even sure where to begin or how hard the process is. I’ve heard on this sub that they are always hiring and needed but I’ve never heard or saw anything and we didn’t really cover it at all in school either. Id even be open to taking courses and relocating if that would help as it somthing I really want to pursue.
