High jacking second top comment to say; this video is a fucking ad. Look near the bottom at 0:06. A white near-transparent text appears.

don't buy toys, just put out a box or a bag

As soon as I come home from the grocery store, I pull the receipt from my pocket, crumple it in a ball, and proceed to keep my orange idiot busy for at least an hour

u/Theodarius Sep 10 '26
This was my cat also!! Entertained for hours with a balled up receipt but only play for 2 seconds with toys. Her little cat tree had a net towards the button and she loved putting it the net and smacking it upwards from the bottom. I could watch her for hours doing that. I miss my baby

I throw my grocery bag on the floor for the void, I don't need to give him the receipts because he will just pull the paperballs out of the trash under my desk when he wants them

My ones are obsessed with toy fishing rods (the types designed for you to attach feather teasers and similar on the end).
But it don't if there's no toy on the end. Put feathers or other fake animals on it and they'llaybe bat at it once. But take it off so theyr just chasing the metal clip that the teaser fixes to? Best game ever in their minds!

Cats need proof you suffered financially first. A free box or bag just doesn’t count.

I bought $70 worth of toys at Petsmart. I told my friend my cat wasn't interested in any of them, he told me to put a plastic grocery bag through an empty toilet paper roll and wah-la. I returned everything.

For 24 years I have had a brown, 52" shoe lace that has been the absolute favorite toy of all three cats I've had over that time. Their second favorite toy is a tennis ball knotted into the end of a white tube sock.
23
u/navissima Sep 10 '26
Just a ball in a sock? They play themselves or do you drag it in front of them?
47
u/BuckyGoldman Sep 10 '26
With a bit more explanation, I undo the knot a few times a year (not often at all) and put a few pinches of catnip in with the tennis ball. That's enough to keep them interested in playing with it by themselves all the time. So yeah, just a ball in a sock.

My last cat it was a 3 foot long scrap of waste material that I had cut when cutting out a pattern, they found it and thought it was amazing so I couldn't throw it out obviously.

Kids are the same: get them toys, or just give them a cardboard box. They always choose the cardboard box first lol

My human child has a small trampoline with a bar across the top so she can hold it while jumping.
My youngest cat is about 2 years old and she LOVES to hang from it and use it to do flips like this. I thought she was the only cat gymnast :P

It was the way she grabbed her legs as she went over. So so freaking cute.

If I was smol enough to be playing like that, I would too seems like a lot of fun.
I too made the mistake of buying my cat a lot of toys that he's not interested in. He just likes these handmade catnip ones I buy from Etsy. So I donated his other toys to the local cat shelters.

I bought quite a few cat toys and lasers..
Mine loves social play like fight the house duster, fight the broom when someone is sweeping, being chased by a human holding a plastic bag.

Cats are funny the one toy on our house that always gets attention is the one they’ve have since we adopted them as kittens.
The one skittish cats favorite toy is a plastic straw, she doesn’t chew on it nothing dangerous but she loves to carrry it around and meow you it in her mouth so we all know she has it. Goes everywhere with her.
The ginger menace loves the one toy we use to play fetch and nothing else.

I've bought quite a few toys for my cat (and dog) in the 8 months I've had them. They play with something for about five minutes and then lose interest.
For my cat, nothing compares to dangling a ribbon near him to paw at it or putting a cardboard box/paperbag nearby so he can explore it. He's fascinated by shoeboxes and has worked out how to open ones I keep my good trainers in. He's also got a thing for my robot hoover. The dog is terrified of it and will leave the room as soon as he sees it moving, the cat stalks it around the flat and tries pouncing on it once it goes back to charge. I've had to put something around the docking station so it can't be attacked. Gone are the days of activating the hoover whilst I'm at work :(

i work in a cat hotel (hotel for cats) and currently have kittens ranging from 5 months to a year as the majority on my floor, and some of the older kittens who didnt grow up socialized end up doing this as a form of play, a lot do find that with other cats around, play is a lot more fun! some it becomes a neuro divergent tick, as soon as they are behind a closed door they chase their tail or legs habitually. So what im saying socializing your cat is good and the best way to raise kittens is in pairs if bonded and not very brave.

I too liked to do flips on the bars on the school playground when I was a child.

Your fault: your expectations for an orange were misaligned with reality. She’s in fact doing exactly what an orange should be doing.

She doesn’t have custody of the brain cell currently so she has to make do. Clearly. Gosh.

Awww, she's just connecting with her inner Trapèze artist from a former life. 🤔 If reincarnation is a thing, could Ginger cats have been humans with natural Reddish-blonde hair?

Its like a kid who gets a swing set and only wants to climb the frame. You can't pick how they will use it, and they will always find a way you didn't expect.
