A former Oddity developer is claiming to have been C&D'd by Pastel for threatening to make an exposé on the state of the game. (Bonuses: Abuse allegations, how Pastel fucked over Dave, and Pastel's history of associating with and staffing the devteam with 4channers, bigots, and alt-righters.)
(TW: Mentions of emotional, domestic, and sexual abuse allegations)
TL;DR: There's this game developer on X claiming to have previously worked on Oddity. They're claiming to have been getting harassed by the Oddity team for the past 6 years, stating that they'll be releasing an exposé on the whole project soon. They've recently claimed that Pastel has sent them a Cease and Desist which has prevented them from talking about the project more. While it's likely that this person did in fact work on Oddity, they are also an extremely unreliable bigoted weirdo, are friends with an indie game developer who has been accused of sexual/emotional/domestic abuse, and are probably making up a bunch of stuff for attention. This person is part of a gamedev social circle of alt-righters and bigots connected with 4chan which Pastel is also strongly associated with, actively collaborating with many of them on several projects.
Backstory (leaks, dev drama, how Pastel royally fucked over Dave and made him quit after a decade, fun things like that)
This all starts with the developer dramas that took place in June between Pik and Maxxis, soon after development builds of the game were leaked. The subreddit FAQ has a section on it which you should read for details, but it resulted in Maxxis ragequitting from the project after 16 years. In September there would be another spat between the two where Maxxis briefly mentioned a controversy in the team, stating:
"Just like [Pik] brushed off the severity of Dave leaving while being aware of the GSM2 build being worked on under our noses with the current programmer but staying silent on their Fight knight allegations - putting every other members’ reputation at risk working with them." (screenshot)
For those unaware, Dave was a programmer on Mother 4, one of the original developers from all the way back in 2008, who spent a decade working on a custom engine for the game only for Pastel to throw it out one day and decide that it was going to be made in Game Maker, an off-the-shelf engine, instead. Pastel had apparently started developing a Game Maker sidebranch of Mother 4 specifically for content in the 2020 Oddity trailer, as a proof-of-concept rather than an actual complete engine change, but then decided (all by himself apparently) that they were scrapping all of Dave's work and starting over in Pastel's preferred engine. Dave quit in 2021 and apparently it was not on good terms (It should be mentioned that Maxxis confirmed this message, posted in the Discord in December 2021, to be accurate; the poster was the partner of an Oddity developer at the time).
The Fight Knight controversy isn't fully documented anywhere as far as I can tell, mostly happening on long-deleted Twitter threads (it's touched on in the FAQ), but it was a controversy with the lead developer of the indie game Fight Knight getting exposed for being an abuser. You can read the testimony of a victim here (TW: Sexual abuse, assault). Maxxis didn't state the exact connection between the controversy and the Oddity devteam, and the Oddity developers haven't made a statement about it.
The (maybe) developer and (maybe) leaker
Enter Thumbtack. Thumbtack is an indie developer who has worked on a number of games, and is a friend of the lead Fight Knight developer. I'm unsure if he worked on Fight Knight itself (the name 'Thumbtack' isn't in the credits), but he's been strongly affiliated with the developer's projects, being mentioned on Fight Knight's Kickstarter, and they have often promoted eachother's games on their socials and interacted a ton generally. His primary focus has been a game (series?) called Benbo Quest, released in 2018, made in Game Maker. A fun fact about Benbo Quest: Pastel is in the credits for it, along with another Oddity developer Paradoxigent. Keep that in mind.
Thumbtack is also a transphobe and a huge edgelord/bigot in general (the person calling him out here was actually another Oddity developer at the time). One of those people where they want to be cool and edgy and funny and shitpost 24/7 and go "you can't censor me I make fun of everyone equally" and then they conveniently only ever make fun of marginalized groups. The classic "I will never make a serious statement on anything so you can never hold me accountable or prove me wrong for anything", Schrodinger's Asshole archetype. He limits his public persona to general shitposting and posting schizophrenic nonsense all day, but he is mentioned throughout Flatwood's testimony of the Fight Knight lead's friend group (referred to in the doc as "Tony", see the footnotes) as being a typical far-right chud. The alt account of his that Shrinefox called out back in 2020 has long since been wiped, but you can find many choice tweets archived on the Wayback Machine such as homophobia, racism, prolific use of the n-word, transphobia, defending other transphobes (this one is actually related to Oddity, see the Transphobia section at end) and so on. He's spoken about in even more detail by the victim in this thread of tweets which I highly recommend reading. He came out in support of the accused after the allegations were made, and he's continued to support their projects and interact with them on Twitter in the following years.
I bring this all up for two reasons: 1. To demonstrate that he is not at all a trustworthy source of information, and there's a very high chance for most or all of what he's said to be completely and utterly fabricated, and 2. Because there's a surprisingly long history of transphobia in the M4/Oddity devteam (though several devs are overtly supportive of trans rights), nearly all stemming from Pastel's friends and people he brought into the team, which I go into more at the end. But setting that aside for a moment, he has recently been talking a lot about Oddity, and we can cross-reference his claims with more verifiable info to gleam information on parts of Oddity's history.
His claims
So this Thumbtack guy isn't someone to listen to, and honestly if he came out calling Pastel a piece of shit I'd probably end up with a higher opinion of Pastel in the end. But it's worth taking a look at what he's said recently.
His first post on the matter on September 25th:
"for the last 6 years i have been the victim of a targeted harassment campaign by a group of “indie game devs” who have colluded to stop me from releasing the Mother 4 tapes" (screenshot)
He replied to some people under that post:
"im gathering the evidence... give me 2 weeks this is the journalism scoop of the century. i might not respond if i dont respond its because they got me" (screenshot)
"I know everything.
"I was the whole time and I saw everything, I am writing it down so keep an eye on this post because I will post more" (screenshot)
He doesn't mention Oddity by name, but it's clear that's what he's talking about.
A few days later he would make a shitpost about it.
"SECRET EXPOSE AND LEAKS ABOUT THE LAST 8 YEARS OF GAME DEVELOPMENT DRAMA...
"my SECRET PROJECT and why i GOT FIRED.....
"BENBO 2... CANCELLED?
"benbo quest.... the key to all of this. 2 hour video LEAKED INTERVIEW CONFESSION drops this FRIDAY ." (screenshot)
Again, this guy is 50% shitpost and 49% bigotry so it's difficult to make out what the hell he's talking about, and it could just be a generic shitpost and not mean anything. But assuming it's about Oddity, the implication is that he was kicked from the game and is going to talk about it soon. Also, most of everything he says on his X is related to Benbo Quest in some way; the Fight Knight abuse victim claims that it's essentially a dogwhistle within that particular community.
He'd make a few more random Oddity-related shitposts over the following two weeks but they're not interesting. On the 14th October they'd make this response to the above post:
"if anybody still wondering about this i got a cease and desist from YOU KNOW WHO and in contact with lawyers atm hopefully i can release the info within the next 3 months" (screenshot)
And that's it so far. Probably he'll continue shitposting for the next few weeks and nothing will come of it in the end.
Evidence, and Pastel
Again, this person is shit and shouldn't be taken seriously. But a lot of what they've said lines up with things that can be independently proven.
We know that Thumbtack is a programmer who has worked on Game Maker projects before, who is friends with, and likely worked with, the Fight Knight lead (whose games are also all Game Maker), so he could have been brought in by Pastel for his experience. Pastel was acquainted with Thumbtack in 2018 and collaborated with him on Benbo Quest. A debacle in October/November 2020 following the discovery of an Oddity composer being transphobic (another friend of Pastel's, see the end section), with Thumbtack being called out by former Oddity developer Shrinefox, along with Pik's spontaenous declaration of trans rights a few days prior (based), would indicate some form of internal controversy, which might imply that Thumbtack was part of the team then (or was known to them if nothing else). Shrinefox would later leave the Oddity team but when discussing it recently they made no mention of Thumbtack or anything related to transphobia drama, so possibly it was all resolved in private.
Along with Maxxis's statement, there is another piece of evidence that proves a connection between the Oddity team and Fight Knight: In the recently leaked Oddity dev builds from 2022 and 2023, assets from Fight Knight are being used as placeholders. In particular there is a music track, labelled in the Oddity leaks as "sndMus_dreaming.wav" which is this track from the Fight Knight soundtrack (don't click if you want to avoid giving the Fight Knight team ad money). According to dataminers in the Oddity Discord there are also assets from Benbo Quest in the Oddity builds, further connecting them to Thumbtack.
There aren't many firm connections besides these as far as I can tell, but there's a lot of circumstantial evidence and hearsay out there, all of which should be taken with a grain of salt, and I'll not muddy the waters with them at this time. But there is one other notable series of connections: In 2024 the official Oddity X account posted in support of a game called Sunset Devils, which the Fight Knight lead was working on from 2018-2020. To summarize, there is Sunset Devils, Devil Engine, and Fight Knight, all worked on by the same (alleged) abuser, all made in Game Maker Studio, Thumbtack is strongly affiliated with all three projects, and the Oddity X account reposted an announcement from one of them. There's a whole social circle of game developers here, the same names pop up over and over in each of these games and on eachother's socials, including the people mentioned in the abuse allegation docs. There is a strong connection with 4chan's /agdg/ board: It's in the Special Thanks sections of the Benbo Quest, Fight Knight, and Devil Engine credits (interestingly, Pastel and another Oddity dev Paradoxigent are also in Fight Knight's credits). Pastel was known to frequent /agdg/ and mentioned Devil Engine a few times in Discord, so... Yeah, there's a lot here that I don't have time to unpack. The Fight Knight lead's victim once described this whole group as "the indie Cosby suite". It seems pretty fucked and I'm going to leave it there for now. Feel free to jump down the X rabbithole yourself and figure out more though. But I'm confident in saying that there are strong connections between Pastel, Thumbtack, the Fight Knight lead, and a bunch of other shitty people.
Piecing together the timeline
So the timeline looks to be something like this:
Pastel and Thumbtack were acquainted in 2018 at the latest, as Pastel is in the credits for Thumbtack's game.
The Mother 4 team started working on the trailer in late 2019, and presumably this is when Pastel and "the current programmer" (from Maxxis) started working on the Game Maker trailer build. So assuming that this programmer is Thumbtack, that would mean he joined the team in 2019 or 2020, which checks out with the "for the last 6 years" timeframe that Thumbtack mentions.
In late October 2020 a composer working on Oddity would be called out for transphobia. Pik would make a post in support of trans rights the next day. A few days later Thumbtack would get publicly called out by another Oddity developer Shrinefox for being a transphobe (Thumbtack's involvement with the game wasn't public at this point). Presumably a lot happened behind the scenes.
In November 2020 members of the Oddity Discord discovered that screenshots of the game posted by Pastel were taken in Game Maker. This discovery would result in Pastel quitting social media that same day (there's a section in the FAQ about this).
In October 2021, a month before the game's release, the lead developer of Fight Knight was publicly accused of being an abuser by a former developer. Thumbtack stuck by his side and continued to support him afterward. Pastel is also in the game's credits as a playtester.
In November 2021 Dave and another developer would quit the project entirely. Apparently after scrapping Dave's engine Pastel started ghosting him, withholding any and all information on the game's progress. This is a consistent pattern of behaviour with Pastel: Maxxis claims the exact same thing happened to him, and other ex-developers have made similar claims about having no idea what was going on with development or what they were supposed to be doing at any time.
This year (2026), two dev builds of Oddity, from 2022 and 2023 respectively, were leaked. These leaked builds contain placeholder content taken directly from Fight Knight and Benbo Quest.
Maxxis makes the first public mention of a connection between a Fight Knight programmer and Oddity in September 2026. Pik responds to this message but just states that they aren't commenting on the matter publicly.
A few weeks later, Thumbtack would begin posting about Oddity, alluding to him being involved previously and stating that he's going to expose the behind-the-scenes of the project.
Did he leak the Oddity dev builds?
I mean, there's no real way of knowing, but the circumstantial evidence paints him as a likely candidate. As a programmer he would have access to developer builds of the game, while artists would not. Pastel treats the game's artists like contractors, basically just DMing them with what they need to do while not giving them any actual info on the game's progress (Maxxis didn't even know the dev builds existed until they were leaked, for instance). The builds were leaked on 4chan and the leaker, in typical chud fashion, used racial slurs in their messages, so that lines up with them being a bigot. The builds include Fight Knight and Benbo Quest assets, so possibly that's what he had on hand for placeholders. That the leaks would come out when they did would imply a schism between the Oddity dev team and the leaker, and there are clearly issues between the Oddity dev team and Thumbtack, so possibly something happened in or around June that kickstarted all of this.
Thumbtack claims that he's been getting harassed for 6 years by the Oddity team, which would sorta break a lot of this timeline since it would imply that they left the team around 2020. But I think that part can be explained away by the simple fact that this person is a dipshit trying to fabricate legitimacy and drama who can't be trusted. But on the other hand, that Shrinefox and Pik would both call him out in late 2020, right before Pastel quit social media, would imply that something happened in the team around that point. It would also be odd that the transphobic composer on the team in 2020 got kicked while Thumbtack was kept, unless Pastel only kicked the composer because of public backlash rather than their shitty beliefs. Wouldn't surprise me honestly.
Conclusions
It's possible that everything this person has said is complete bullshit and nothing they say should be taken at face value. But there are enough coincidences that I think it's reasonable to conclude that, at the very least, this person did work on Oddity from around 2019 to 2020, probably until at least 2023, maybe until this year. Maxxis calls them the "current programmer" but unless they only very recently got kicked I'm not sure how that fits with Thumbtack stating he's at odds with the Oddity team. It's possible that he got kicked ages ago and nobody told Maxxis because apparently nobody told Maxxis anything ever, but who knows? An alternative explanation is that Thumbtack is not the person Maxxis was referring to, that there's a different Oddity programmer with ties to Fight Knight, and Thumbtack is just a red herring who got kicked years ago or was never on the team to begin with, but we might use Occam's Razor here to discount that possiblity.
Now, it's one thing to conclude that this person was an Oddity developer at one point, but it's another thing entirely to believe that Pastel has issued a Cease and Desist against them. It just doesn't track with anything we know about Pastel or the Oddity team. For one, C&D's cost lawyer money, and if there's one constant throughout the 20 years of this project's existence it's that the Oddity team are extremely cheap. There have been so many leaks and testimonies out there over the years that I can't see why Pastel would decide to bring out the big guns for this one random ex-developer. I think it's likely that the C&D is a fabrication put out there so Thumbtack can string people along and get publicity for his indie game project, and I suspect that the entire impetus behind all of this is the same. Unfortunately by making this post I am inadvertently playing into that, so all I can ask is that you, the reader, don't support this guy's stuff.
Anyways, nearly everyone involved in this sucks and the game is never coming out. It is awful how the leads of the Oddity project treated people like Dave and Maxxis who had been on the team for over a decade, treating them like occasional contractors to bring in when Pastel wanted something done, as if they had no say on the project they helped create, like Pastel's word is final when it was never even his project in the first place. That the Oddity devteam haven't said a single thing about this or any of the other controversies that have happened over the last 6 years is horrible and speaks to either a widespread cowardice amongst the Oddity team, or that they're alright with the way so many people to have worked on this game over the last 18 years have been continually fucked over, to say nothing of the fans that have been strung along for so long, fans who have believed in the team for so long, for nothing.
I have long since stopped expecting anything to come from this project, but discovering that Pastel is so clearly associated with a group of racist 4chan-aligned gamedevs who are, by all accounts, awful people or people who freely associate with awful people, and is literally credited in an abuser's game, is somehow the worst of it all. At least it was just mismanagement and incompetence before all of this. The only way this gets better is if Pastel, not Pik or anyone else, comes out and explains things, or the rest of the team grow a spine and replace him. There needs to be some accountability here. This isn't unsalvagable: The reason this fanbase has persisted for so long, longer than for any other indie project in history, is because there's something special here. But there needs to be some accountability. Pastel, Pik, please be better.
Postlude: Transphobia in the Oddity project
This isn't super relevant to the rest of the post but I wanted to discuss it anyway, since I don't think it's been discussed anywhere in detail before. This wouldn't be the first time where an Oddity developer was found to be a transphobe: In 2020 it was found that a composer for the game who went by Arsen was a vocal transphobe, and they were kicked from the team soon after (not before Thumbtack defended their views on their Twitter alt account; go figure). Pastel made a lukewarm statement on the matter soon after, stating:
"I've been made aware of this. I will express that we celebrate shane who has also moved past some very negative views and statements and grown as a person. if this continues to be an issue it will be handled, but I can't speak for anyone. he's expressed remorse and revision to me and just wanted some tracks featured to help move past this as far as I can tell.
"to say I don't realize how much it affects people ignored my own history with identity searching - I understand, I do"
I don't know about the views from Shane Mesa that Pastel is mentioning here but I will say that the whole situation with Shane in 2017 was a very complex one mired in issues with mental health and his struggles with bipolar disorder. It's besides the point but when arguing with Pik in September, Maxxis also stated "Just like you pretended to support Shane when he left - while enabling bullying another potential member off the internet". Not sure what that means, but I digress.
Additionally, an old leaked Mother 4 story document made by Pastel (it was posted to the Discord in September but I don't think it's on any archive site unfortunately), outlines a faction called the 'Wintergreens', describing them as "a gang of hippies and crossdressers involved in various acts of violence and vandalism, drugs, theft, and so on." The faction leader is described as "A very muscular transvestite with unclear intentions". This is just a developer document but all the same, those descriptions of trans people are, well, problematic.
There seems to be a precedent for Pastel bringing friends into the Oddity project and for those friends to end up being transphobes and bigots, which, when combined with the red flags in his dev documents, his status as a known 4chan user, and his years-long association with a circle of alt-right abuse defenders, paints a rather unflattering picture. Though it is worth noting that other Oddity developers have been vocally pro-LGBTQ in the past, which is good. Personally I get the feeling that Pastel isn't transphobic per say but is just a centrist who's uncomfortable with confrontation and happy to write off bigotry amongst his friends as simply being "humor". Not much better, but, still. I also don't think the Oddity team are all transphobic or are collectively okay with bigotry, but it's concerning how many transphobic elements there are orbiting the project which seemingly all come back to Pastel in some way. It always comes back to Pastel.
