Welcome to OCP -- PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

TL;DR You need to give feedback on two other poems before you can share your own poem, and then put links to that feedback in your post. If you don't know how to give feedback, read the guide. Reusing feedback links will result in a ban.

Heyo, welcome to OCpoetry. (That’s “original content” if you don’t know). This is a place for sharing and getting feedback on your own poems. We are the sister subreddit of r/Poetry, which is for sharing and discussing published poetry. Our goal is to create a place where anyone can learn to become a better creative writer, kind of like a free online writer's workshop.

This post is an orientation to the subreddit. If you’re new, read this before sharing your work. If you’re less new, then read this anyways, as it has a few changes to how we've done things in the past. If you’ve still got questions after reading this post, please send a modmail. There are some FAQs at the end of this post which will be updated as we go. We also have a huge and very disorganized wiki containing all of our resources, essays on how to write poetry and historic writing prompts, I recommend you check it out.

So, here’s basically how it works:

This subreddit works on a pay-it-forward system. If you want to share a poem, you need to give feedback to two others from this subreddit. This ensures that everyone gets some readers and hears some response, rather than just shouting their verses into the void. If you don’t think you’re up to writing feedback for others just yet, we recommend you check out r/Justpoetry or r/Poems, where there are no requirements for sharing your work.

1. All posts must include two links to recent feedback.

Every post must contain two unique links to your comments where you have provided feedback on this subreddit within the past two weeks. Feedback links cannot be reused for multiple post or reposts of old poems. All posts without feedback links will be removed, without notice by our subreddit robot so make sure they are included in your initial post -- you cannot post with the intent to add them later.

But, how do I get the links to my feedback comments?

That kind of depends on what platform you're on. If you're on desktop or on a third-party mobile app, there should be a 'share' or 'permalink' link underneath every comment on Reddit. Clicking on that should give you a unique URL to your comment. Just copy + paste that into the body of your post.

If you're on the official Reddit app, you'll have to click 'share' on the comment and choose the 'Copy URL' option, paste that into your notes with the body of your poem. Then copy and paste the entire thing into a new post on the Reddit app.

2. At least one of your comments should be on a poem that has received no other comments.

This ensures that everyone has a chance to get a few reads and hopefully some decent feedback. If for whatever reason you can’t find any lonely poems, then comment on the poem that seems to have received the least amount of feedback. The easiest way to do this is to sort posts by new.

3. Feedback must be high-effort.

High-effort means different things to different people. It does not mean “super long” or “expert quality”. But it does mean doing more than the bare minimum.

You don't have to complement, criticize, or try to figure out the "deeper meaning". You should try to notice your own reactions and explain them as best as you can. If you want to explain your interpretation or summary of the piece, you can and this is often helpful to the writer. If the poem made you laugh or cry, feel bored, confused or nostalgic — say so, and then explain why you think it did. A good rule of thumb is that each of your feedback comments should be at least a short paragraph.

We understand that giving other writers feedback on their creative work can feel a bit artificial or uncomfortable, if you’ve never done it before. That’s why we’ve written a feedback guide for beginners. There are more feedback guides linked in the FAQ below. You should also read some of the other feedback comments around the sub to get a feel for what works for others. Poems that link to low-effort feedback, and low-effort comments themselves, will be removed at mod discretion, or if you report it to us. However, we’re less interested in policing you and more interested in helping you grow as readers and writers. We are more likely to ask you follow-up questions, than remove your work entirely. The mods skulk the comments sections and will ask follow-up questions on comments that seem a little thin, and please answer those questions if you get any.

4. Please Be Kind.

Treat each other with kindness and respect. The mods have an incredibly strict definition for each of these concepts. We will proactively remove comments and poems and ban users that make others feel unwelcome or unsafe. Your right to creative expression does not extend to poetry that promotes misogyny, homo/trans/queerphobia, racism, etc. If your poetry’s especially violent or covers sensitive subjects, please label it with the NSFW tag or a content warning in the title. Harsh criticism is allowed -- encouraged, really -- as long as you’re being harsh on the poem, not the person. Remember that the narrator (or the “speaker”) of the poem is not necessarily the author.

5. Audio, video, and image poems are allowed; but the text of the poem must be included in the body of the post.

This is so that people can still enjoy your poem if they're unable to view or listen to your link for whatever reason.

6. You may include a link to your poetry blog at the end of your post.

Or your instagram, or your personal creative project, or your soundcloud, or your Etsy page. As long as it's poetry-adjacent that's cool with us. Just don't get spammy.

Attempting to dodge any of these rules, or abuse directed towards moderators enforcing these rules, will earn you an immediate ban.

FAQs

What do the Poem & Workshop flairs do?

They simply allow you to show your intentions and expectations for the piece you are posting. The Poem flair is for sharing a piece, with the expectation of receiving mostly surface-level feedback and general advice. The Workshop flair is for a piece that you really want to work on, something you want to pick apart and analyse. It signals that you are open to discussing the piece, and that you invite strong critique.

How do I format my poetry on Reddit?

The following is advice for formatting in Markdown. Two spaces at the end of a line gives you a line break.
Type two spaces at the end of a line, then hit enter twice for a stanza break.

Three dashes "___" will give you a line through the post.

Type two spaces to create an empty line,

so you can get lines

that look like this.

Four spaces before each line will allow you
to format however you like, this is 'code block'
       in the Fancy Pants editor.

one asterisk before and after a piece of text will give you italics, two asterisks for bold.

Can I print one of these poems out/use it on my instagram with my art/put it in my book?

Ask the author. Part of what makes this space a useful workshop space is that everyone feels safe to share their stuff; if people start using poetry without the author's permission, or god forbid, trying to pass off another artist's work as their own, the userbase of this sub will feel less safe to do so. Please, ask the author, and then do what they say.

I'm thinking about trying to get my poem published somewhere. What should I do?

The standard thing is to find a literary journal. There are a zillion literary journals and magazines all over the world. They have different themes, tastes, styles, audiences, readerships, levels of prestige. Some charge fees for submission, some do not, some will pay you if you get accepted, some don't, some will give you feedback, some won't let you know anything for months. So first you'll want to pick a few of your poems, get some feedback from some trusted readers (or from here, of course) and then start looking for a journal that's a good home for your work. Most lit journals have submissions periods where they accept all the work for their next issue, and then sift through everything they get.

You will probably get a lot of rejections. This is normal. It's kind of a numbers game. You can submit the same poem to multiple journals as long as the journal says something like "simultaneous submissions are allowed". If you do get accepted, congrats! Most journals want 'first publication rights' or 'first serial rights' or something similar, so that means you'll have to tell all the other journals you submitted that poem to that you've been published elsewhere. (For that reason we strongly recommend deleting your poem from reddit if you want to submit it to a journal -- technically and legally speaking, writing a post on reddit is still considered publishing your work, and reddit owns all the text on the site.)

Here are some places to get you started looking for journals:

Duotrope and Submittable are two apps that help you search for journals, and help you track what poems you've submitted to which places. Submittable is free, Duotrope is not. They are GREAT.

Poets & Writers has a list of lit journals, small presses, and writing contests. This is a great place to start. They also have a newsletter listing all the presses and journals going into their submissions period.

I'd also check out r/literarycontests, if you fancy yourself as a prize winning poet.

A few poetry podcasts

I thought I might include a few podcasts that helped me learn a little more about the history and craft of poetry, as well as find some good poets to read. All of these are available on Spotify, as well as many other platforms.

The New Yorker Poetry Podcast

A poet reading and discussing a poem from the New Yorker archives, as well as one of their own pieces. A great place to find good poetry and hear some discussion of craft. The earlier episodes are with Paul Muldoon, who is delightful.

The Faber Poetry Podcast

Two poets read and discuss their work, with plenty of talk about craft. As well as lots of poems sent in from authors across the world. They really get shoulder-deep into it, which is always wonderful to hear.

In Our Time

A group of experts are brought together to discuss a subject over forty-five minutes. This isn’t strictly a poetry podcast, but there are hundreds of episodes on poets and poems of the past. I highly recommend the episode on The Green Knight with Simon Armitage.

Poetry Contest PROMPT: Rattle Ekphrastic Challenge, October 2026

Hi everyone. One of the OCPoetry mods here. Let's share a prompt for the whole subreddit. (If this looks familiar, we did it last month too.)

Every month Rattle, a leading poetry magazine, presents a visual work of art and asks poets to respond to that artwork in poetry. This is called ekphrastic poetry. I thought it would be fun to post that here for anyone looking for inspiration or a challenge.

Here is this month's artwork. Your challenge is to write a poem in response to that art.

Normal feedback rules do not apply to this thread. Write and share as many poems in response to that artwork as you'd like.

Also, if you feel like you've written something really excellent, you should know that Rattle DOES allow you to submit poems to them for publication that have appeared in online forums. (Most magazines consider those already published; Rattle allows internet-shared poems as long as they're "uncurated," i.e., haven't gone through an editorial process. I can assure you that here on OCPoetry we do not have any kind of editorial process.) So if you're feeling particularly ambitious, you can use that link above to submit your poem to them. It's a long shot — they get hundreds of entries every month, maybe thousands at this point idk, and only two are selected — but it's good practice if you're thinking about getting into publication and can manage the mixture of pride in your work and almost certainty of rejection that goes into the literary magazine publication process.

Anyway, enjoy the challenge! I hope you have fun. If enough people enjoy this I can make it a regular thing.

Just Sharing Denouement

Can you see it, my love?

The way I’ve already made up my mind?

It’s about that time, my hand-picked destiny is calling.

I’m just waiting for the money to come rolling in.

I can’t leave you yet, hanging all high and dry.

Still, when have you looked last?

At these empty eyes,

These vacant, boarded-up, run-down, unwholesome, and battered windows to my aggrieved soul?

The hollow anger I once burned for warmth has gone.

Leaving me as nothing but a vagrant castaway

Stranded on a keepsake of trust

And I am an empty, unforgiving cold.

I’ve stopped running on a swallowed temper,

Only to find I’m still not full of pride,

Merely dead on my infirm feet,

Not yet buried

Under the mountain of a devolved grief

I’d been hoping to mightily tear asunder.

So I’ve surrendered, allowed these feeble knees of a forsaken bastard to finally bend

To a future I’ve spent fixing the things I never broke.

I must go, brave a peaceful unknown.

There’s hope within this simple rope.

A knot stronger than our matrimony, one I’ve tied alone.

Forgive me, you weary angel,

But I must say this final, empty, hopeful, morbid, scared, happy, and tired

Oh my heartening darling, this so dreadfully tired

Goodbye.

Just Sharing a freeverse of a feeling I regret putting into words

To plait golden arm hairs on the sunniest day of the week
With your clammy palm flush against my cheek
- All lighthearted things you do that make mine twist
Without space I’ll deface our relationship -
I’ll meet you in the water, where you look so so perfect
when you know I could never say no to you
but not that I remember which cards you wrote you loved me in
and that you are the most cohesively beautiful one I know
any undesirable thing about you is perfected in my eyes
to think I see you the way god was supposed to,
had he not forbidden this long before I worshipped you.

Just Sharing i haven't named this poem

Its blood is weighed in freezing cold.
It fills the chest yet nothing still.
For joy or love, it isn't bold.

Stop trying to run, it has been told;
It claimed the debt and pays the bill.
Its blood is weighed in freezing cold.

It stripped itself, and all was sold;
To break and fly is still its thrill.
For joy or love, it isn't bold.

At every moon, its toll is tolled;
It feeds the smoke born from the grill.
Its blood is weighed in freezing cold.

It can’t and won’t stay in the fold;
It counts the days, and counts them nil.
For joy or love, it isn't bold.

Its own closed vote was cast and polled;
It is the court, resolved to chill.
Its blood is weighed in freezing cold;
For joy or love, it isn't bold.

Just Sharing Poetic Death

I think you left a message
I don’t know if it’s true

It’s accurate as hell
It hurts like hell too

So maybe it’s a capsule
Ahead of its time

A package straight from your heart
Sent to crush mine

I don’t think that’s true
But of course then there’s you

Please,
Just tell me you’re still around
Truth,
Eclipsed skyward by the ground

Just Sharing The Oppressed's Whisper

Once I release this bowstring

The panacea to my chronic malady

What song shall it sing

A rousing crescendo of liberty

As your walking corpse waltz with its own mortality

.

Carry this whisper with great speed

'Thou art just a wooden arrow

To the cresfallen, art thou not our bleeding hearts

Pierce tyranny's most fragile parts

Wrought dishonorable blood into an artisan's work of art

It wasn't chance, but destiny's playing its blessed part

Break the shackles weaken hands

Have no strength to shake

Give back what the wicked take'

.

Breath

Tighten your grip

Tighter

Heels feels lighter

Freedom always needs an igniter

Feedback Please My Last Stranger

The night’s air did not so much as stir
When first I looked upon my last stranger.
His hat he set down on his knee
And so strangely did he look at me.
A shadow stretched long across his face;
  His no-eyes still saw mine.
“And you are, sir?”
  “I am.”

Everything cold, his did touch mine,
And my breath left in little time.
Every man I knew,
  Every woman too,
I saw then, in the shifting black canvas
  Of him;
And he was.

My regrets, my fear,
Welled into one hot, clinging tear
That fell down to my heaving chest,
Where my aching soul could no longer rest.
This temporal form, soft and mush, fell away;
  And he was.

The last hand I held,
  The last music I heard,
The last prayer I spoke,
  The last heart I broke;
And he was.

My strangled confession,
  My blistering pain,
My wails to angels;
  And he was.

My quiet ferryman,
  My feather-heavy heart;
And he was.

A baby’s cry;
  And he was.

My last stranger.

Feedback Please Prayer to a distant star

Have you found it without me?
Were you lost with me?
Entangled, distraught, too hot to think?
Did we ever find love?
Despite our missing pieces, I found mine with you. I was found in you.
Universal pool, gravity weighing us down.
I'm materialized within your longing. Despite your push, I remain within your grasp.
Maintain.
Love me longer, hold me tighter, keep your thoughts only about me, your mind solely focused on me.
I am.
Our love, your love, our waves that have no shores, light with endless reach, a hole with no end, a story without a last page.
Find me in the infinite.
Your love in me is never exhausted.
The bracelet on your wrist, the breath in your lungs, I remain forever internal, eternal.
I am your closest, most distant star.
Trust, hate, disdain, longing, foundation, the cornerstone, love.
No matter what, return unto me.
Speak me, mold me into existence, form me into your wants, your hates, your wish, your life.
Give me control, resistance, soul, resonance, synchronicities.
Corrupt me within and take me with your last breath.

Feedback Please We share our rocks and stones, okay?

Oh, I tripped with sorry accidence,

over a soft dark-grey stone,

and fell on my naked knees.

It doesn’t really hurt,

not me, nor the stone.

But why, dear hypocritical crowd,

do you repeatedly stone everyone,

with mountainous granite,

because it was just rivers smallest kiesel

Feedback Please A few brain blurbs I wrote-- please critique!

Reposting after small additions (and two new ones) since I posted very late last night:

Just wrote six different random poems as a brain dump. I’ve always been a writer, but trying to gage myself as a poet.

These are totally random things that came into my mind, lol. I think they’re kind of interesting.

What do you think? What are your favorites? Least favorites?

Springtime and summer
Savory dead
Bone chilling winter
Endless Dread
Floating helplessly as years go by
Calender sheets ripping,
Clouds leave the sky.

--

The Black Death was not a rat’s doing
It was people.
It always was people.
Put the blame on others. Of course.

--

Ghosts float around every day
Plugging memories into our heads
Some are demons, some are angels.
Intrusive thoughts that burn. Daydreams that shimmer.
Which one do you allow?

--

I’ve seen limbless, decaying birds flying over glossy lakes of blood.
I’ve seen rotten fleshed infants nibbling at the fingertips of their dead-eyed mothers.
I boiled my heart in a fountain of excrement
while you powdered your cheeks with liquid gold.

--

Flying over pockets of light
Knowing arkness hides in the warmth. In the comfort.
We all know it, we all do.
But I sit in the plane, watching the LEDs go by,
And thank the world for commercial travel.

--

Scalding hot soup washed down with ice
Scrapes to alleviate the burns
Temporary respite.
Ignore it all you want.
Scratch Scratch scratch.

Just Sharing Solstice

Summer turned to autumn.
And soon autumn turns to winter.

As dusk shortens,
I feel myself slip away just like you.

Stubborn leaves will fall and wither on the frozen soil.
The sun will slowly abandon the earth.
And all the other animals will adapt to their environment trying to survive.

Yet I can’t.

The warmth that suffocated me last summer won’t be enough to keep me alive.

The cache will deplete.
Our den lost under a layer of white.
And my pack can’t support me.

As the sunburn you caused months ago heals steadily,
The frostbite catches up.

I’ll hibernate and pray to your god,
on my knees,
begging when spring blossoms you’ll wake me.

Just Sharing Transcending

A calming wind soothes bloody fields

Even clouds afraid to form

From a far a withered knight lies still

He has not conquered the storm

His breath one more closer to death

His eyes fixed on the sky

May God forgive his cunning blade

He did and not ask why

His lake of crimson grows with time

But time for him stands still

Nature's love assuages hearts

And his began to fill

His evil deeds and noble causes

Swirl inside his mind

The grass is soft, his hands let go

His smile begins new life

Feedback Please In My Head

I’ve learned more about you
from your silence
your reliance
on the thoughts of others.

Talks through the night
end in daylight.

So much laid bare
laughter and secrets
shared.

Turns to quiet.

Bursts of texts
end abruptly.

You mess with my head
keeping me from my bed
filling the gaps
of what is unsaid.

Feedback Please Not Yet

Is it normal to be scared of the end?

The eternal void that awaits us all.

Should I jump in now? Now that would depend

On whether I desire to slowly fall

-

I do wonder if that void has windows

Eternal night seems like a scary risk

I press my face hard into the pillows

As I contemplate ceasing to exist

-

Suddenly, I’m gone, drifting into black

The windows aren’t there, there’s nothing to see

I’m already dreaming of coming back

I guess it wasn’t so bad, being me

-

-

-

I wake up, flailing, all covered in sweat

Look around, breath out, and rejoice, “Not yet”

Feedback Please escape

I wish that I could float above this earth like a fairy,

or dive into the depths of the ocean like a mermaid,

or maybe just become very small.

These are wishes I made as a child.

They haven't happened yet.

I wish to hide away ...

unseen,

undisturbed,

untouched.

This world has touched me too much already.

The wild dogs unable to reach me!

The beasts who desire to consume me;

to rip the flesh from my bones,

leaving me without a shell.

I don't wish to be consumed.

I wish to be unanchored and untethered,

I wish to be surrounded by invulnerable magic,

I wish to be free.

I wonder if freedom is possible for me.

Still working, past the deadline. already

missed the due date

sets me free

and

I don't know what to do with it.

Long past its best before date

and yet it sits in the fridge

not used yet not forgot

just there, those

extra days

which stretch out growing mold.

Each day that passes by and by, they age me

and with each day I live again

the morning sun that always

I never thought i'd make it past sixteen.

Just Sharing Not everyone is cut out to be a parent

My mom taught me a lot.

My mom taught me that you should never let yourself trust anyone because thats how you get hurt

my dad taught me things too

my Dad taught me that the only person you should allow yourself to love is yourself

because loving anybody else is how you get hurt.

my mother never taught me to cook or clean,

She never cooked for me and she struggled to stay clean.

She taught me that it's better to lie to yourself than accept the truth

Because the truth is how you get hurt

My father never taught me how to be a man.

He taught me that it's better to abandon everybody that relies on you when things get tough

Because sticking around is how you get hurt

Sometimes I wish that nobody had taught me anything at all

Because that's how I got hurt

Feedback Please Between Static

Static always finds its way around.
Not just when I’m near a TV screen,
but in the exchanges that occur face to face.
It’s in their words
or mine, at times.

Static comes and goes,
leaving a fuzz that festers in my chest.
The recorded clips,
their messages and intentions,
trip me up as I unravel them,
searching for where the buzz comes from.
Yet I listen and obsess to find the answer,
even when others cover their ears to it.
The transmission shouldn’t end
because of some static,
right?

It was never in me to cut the line,
but too much static is just noise,
like friction in speech or distortions of thought.
Sometimes I can barely recognize them
through the persistent buzz from their mouth.
Even they don’t know it’s there.

With cruelty that curdles
in the back of your throat,
you’d corrupt and relay
shared records of solace
to others who never search for your presence.
Records which splay my message
carelessly in the eyes of others,
then you play the fool
to escape judgement when it’s apparent
you chose a frequency that has warped
your end of the line
for a very long time.

There was once a season
when that line was strong.
Static only orbited us,
small and adjustable.
None could interfere with the transmission.

But now it’s shut off for good.
It still hurts to think about
even if it was needed.
The static is gone.
It was starting to mess with my head.

Feedback Please Quiet

Quiet.
The birds are speaking.

Their whispers carried by the evergreens’ breeze.

Can you hear them?
Whispering away—

Waking pines from slumber.

Listen.
They are speaking to you.

Humming dawn into your dreams.

Can you hear them?
Whispering away—

As the morning learns to breathe.

Quiet.
The birds are speaking.

Just Sharing She Is My Mother and I, Her Son

She is not my mother; she did not give birth to me.
Her adopted son, I am her silly phoebe.
I am a clumsy bird and she knows,
I’ll probably fly off and get hurt.
She lets me fly, within reason of course.
For I do not know any better than her.

I flap my little wings to perch on her shoulder.
Puff out my chest, in pride and arrogance.
From my chirps I sing her song,
“She is my mother and I, her son.”

Open to feedback, but I'm pretty content with how it is:)

Feedback Please Strange Waters

Psychic boats leading inside

Rainbow kaleidoscopic phantoms reside

Not dead but simply of another land

Their strange souls lending a hand

Inner and outer music unite

A purple flame illuminating with light

But not everything can exist in the sun

The moon shines upon darkness won

Feedback Please Her Spot

In that car
Under that tree
In that forest

That's where it was
The First

Sweet like candy
Fluttering butterflies
Hot steam
A sweaty marathon
Joy like none other

She told me with a smile
I smiled back
But green is all I see
I'll never know that car

Just Sharing Woe

I regret some.
What I regret is hurt, pain, abandonment.
Regretful of taking something I cherished so dearly, ruining it.
It'll plague my mind forever.
The memories, I treasure.
A time of what once was,
no longer is,
remembered as a time of current.

Feedback Please Old memories

Isn't bad that I missed that
old house in that
haunted forest of
nowhere,
those old pipes that rattle as
afraid Snakes throughout the night,
that would sing me to
sleep.

Oh, how I missed that glazed face of
interest from an
old but yet so wise lady, with
Her naive friendly of a coal cat.
That she would invite me to hang out
as much as possible.

I wish I could bring that creepy smile
that lit so brightly in my darken bedroom that would burn my soul
but yet
that smile would only let me now
that I was welcome
for whom I am in a
old house in
a haunted forest
