Tax Amendments On Ballot Are Not a Tax Cut and Not What They Seem

Income tax cap: Lowers the existing cap from 7 to 3.5 percent

  • It is not a tax cut. It applies to both the corporate and personal rate. Both rates are already scheduled to be below 3.5 percent next year.
  • The NC General Assembly has been cutting income taxes for 13 years. This has disproportionately benefitted large corporations and those with very high incomes.
  • State revenue is falling as our population and costs grow. This is unsustainable and has led to underfunding of services and programs, and local governments paying for what are supposed to be state costs.
  • Income tax cuts lead to increases in fees and sales taxes, and cuts to vital public services.
  • The income tax amendment would lock us into this situation effectively permanently, so future lawmakers hands will be tied.
  • NC has never had a rate this low, and it will be locked into the constitution. This leaves the state unprepared for economic downturns and unforeseen circumstances like natural disasters.

Property Tax Levy Limit: Caps what local governments can collect, NOT your bill

  • It is not a cap on an individual’s property tax bill. It is a cap on the total revenue a local government can collect in property taxes.
  • State lawmakers already have the power to set a levy limit, so the constitutional amendment is not necessary.
  • Increasingly, local governments have been taking on costs that are supposed to be covered by the state and/or federal government. This amendment is likely to lead to service cuts as local governments struggle with state and local revenue constraints.
  • It does not address housing unaffordability and would disproportionately benefit large corporate landowners like tech companies and corporate landlords.
  • What the limit would be and how it would be derived is not public, so there is little recourse or accountability.

Before voting, consider the impact these amendments will have on your community:

  • Who would benefit from these changes and who would be negatively impacted?
  • What would these amendments mean for the funding of quality of life services my family and community rely on, like emergency services, community centers, libraries, public schools, water and sanitation…?
  • How would these revenue constraints impact the ability of the state and local governments to provide services for a growing or aging population and respond to natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances in the future, especially as costs rise?
  • What are specific projects prioritized by our community that are most at risk for delay or cancellation if state funding is uncertain and local government cannot collect sufficient revenue from property taxes to supplement decreases in state investment?
  • How have state and federal funding levels changed over the last 5-10 years? What state funding responsibilities has my local government taken on over that same period?
  • What specific funding shortfalls are we experiencing now, including staffing shortages, school closures, or services interruptions?
  • What are the other methods of generating revenue if income tax and property tax revenue is constrained? Will our locality be forced to rely more on unpopular fees?

Realo Pharmacy app

has anyone else been having issues trying to refill their meds through the mobile app for Realo? I never remember to call when I have my prescriptions on hand and I don't know their numbers; at least when I remember in the middle of the night to renew them I can pull up the app easily and do it.

of course, I'm remembering now when they're closed and none of them are open until Monday morning. I know it's a long shot but figured I'd ask

thanks, y'all

Need more Friends

Hello all! I am a 23 year old female and I’ve been in the area for a long time but I don’t go out much and still don’t know a lot of people in the area. I’ve been wanting to find a group of people (or even one person) that I can become close friends with and maybe do things together to get out of the house or just do things I wouldn’t normally do alone. If anyone is interested please let me know! I’m big into video games, hockey, coffee, and I’m a big foodie! I’m a big talker and I just want to enjoy the small things in life- even if I don’t think I’d be good at it. I just find it hard to do things by myself as I struggle with being perceived by others. Hopefully there’s people out there <3

How to find homes for cats?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello! I have a unique situation with a stray cat that socialized himself. He watched me interact with my cats through the window and fell in love with me. He is the sweetest cat that I have ever met. He will be neutered this week along with his siblings.

I know that shelters and rescues are overwhelmed, so I would like to know if there are online places that people go to look for cats in New Bern. Petfinder? Nextdoor? Social media? I do not have any of these accounts, so I am wondering what the most efficient way is.

His mom is caring for another litter of kittens in the forest, so I will soon have a batch of 6-8 week old kittens to foster and find homes for...

Meal Delivery/Pick-up

My dad just had heart surgery and will be coming home in a few days. I want to get some recommendations for local spots where they can easily get high-quality prepared meals or ready-to-heat dishes to take some stress off his wife. They live up in Vanceboro, so I imagine delivery may be a long shot, but still welcome the reco's. Thanks for the help!

Looking for a housekeeper

Hi there! I’m looking for a reliable home cleaning service or individual to come in and help me clean and organize my home. I’ve had back surgery and I need assistance in keeping my home clean. This will be an initial clean with bi-weekly cleaning after that. I have two dogs and a cat in the home as well, so we are a pet friendly home.

Ultimate Frisbee

Anyone around New Bern play Ultimate Frisbee? 🥏

My wife and I are looking to get more active and would love to find some people who play Ultimate Frisbee locally. We’re not looking to be super competitive—just want to get outside, get some exercise, and have fun playing a sport together.

Does anyone know of any local groups, pickup games, leagues, or places where people regularly play? We’d definitely be interested in joining!

Thanks!

Where To Get A Haircut?

I'm looking for a locally owned salon. Ownership must be absolutely toxic. Stylists should shame their clients for poor life choices, like washing their own hair. The kind of place where it's a privilege to be sat in a chair. Something downtown would be pretty neat.

Anyone know of a place?

Random, and not sure if allowed. But does anyone do Spark delivery in new Bern? Or what is the best bang for buck on these style jobs in the area?

New to New Bern — anyone want to start a trivia team?

Hey everyone! I’m relatively new to New Bern and looking to meet some people and get out of the house a little more.

I’ve been wanting to do trivia nights but obviously showing up solo with no team is a little awkward 😂 So I figured I’d see if anyone here is interested in putting together a regular trivia team.

I’m in my late 20s and down for pretty much any kind of trivia. You don’t have to be a trivia expert — I’m definitely not. Just looking for some fun people who want to grab a drink, answer some dumb questions, and hopefully win occasionally.
If you’re interested, comment or shoot me a DM and we can figure out a night/place!

Just started my photography journey and I’m looking for preferably other new photographers that would like to talk and learn together.
