Text 150 Ft. Ethernet from the main house to a barn

• Upvotes

Yes, I know this question has been asked before. Yes, I know and agree that performance is adequate with a 150 foot run of Cat 5, meant to be buried in the ground, but I have a unique wrinkle to the problem.

I've been having trouble lately with my VOIP phone through Google Voice using the old Obihai boxes. When I answer the phone, the handshake between the phone and Google doesn't seem to work well and I often can't answer the phone when it rings.

I tried the T-Mobile wireless internet and everything works just fine with a direct connection to the router and a short run of cable. This got me thinking that amplification of the signal might solve my problem with a repeater/amplifier of some sort?

What do you all think?

Text help me solve this puzzle

Long story short: packet loss and ping jitter on a LAN PC been a problem for a year now and ISP has no clue what to do or where to look.

  • Router upgraded (2Gbps download)
  • New CAT-7 cable installed
  • Same issue appears on multiple devices and servers/tests
  • Limiting bandwidth / turning off wifi completely doesn't help the issue
  • Ping to router is always stable <1ms
  • Ping to anything else permanently jitters no matter what
  • Internet used to be flawless for 10 years, I've changed nothing on my end til this occured

One very interesting hint is that when I run waveform's bufferbloat test (which I always score D or F because I get +600ms download latency under load) and it finishes, the following 30 seconds my internet is literally perfect 0ms jitter but then returns to garbage.

I highly suspect the issue is in the ISP's infrastructure and cables outside of my house but I'm unsure how to confirm while they are taking their time on it :)

I will be infinitely grateful if anyone takes some time to help solve this because I'm genuinely curious what is causing it and I'm going insane.

Text How can I solve my internet problem in the dorm?

I live in a dorm and I haven't been able to connect to the dorm's internet since I arrived. They connected me a couple of times by taking my IP address. But I lost connection again. I also can't use my own internet on the computer. I turn on mobile hotspot, connect it to the computer, it shows as connected, but I can't access any websites. Does anyone know a solution?

Text PS-Portal mit Fritz Box 6690 Pro Kabel

Hallo zusammen,

- HDMI Kabel an PS5 gezogen
- separate WLAN-SSIDs
- verschieden Filter getestet
- Selbstständige Portfreigaben für PS5 und Portal aktiviert
- 120Hz Einstellungen in PS5 testweise ausgemacht
usw.

Text Sim card in router?

Hi guys. I’m kind of a beginner when it comes to routers and stuff. I’m moving into a new house next week and i was planning on buying a sim card and paying monthly with an unlimited data plan and putting it into a router. Is this possible? Is there anything i should look out for like what routers are compatible with sim cards etc? I’m worried i’m going to buy the wrong router. I live in the UK. Thanks guys.

Text How does router sends data to other clients?

In a 4 way handshake the client and AP generates an Anonce and Snonce that means it has other encryption keys for different devices. If it has other keys (PTK) how does the other client knows what's in the packets? Does the router decrypts them and encrypts them with the other key?

Thanks!

Text Network Operations position for a big Enterprise

I recently applied for a Network Operations position at a large financial services company, and I’m curious to hear some opinions from people who have experience working in similar environments.

Currently, I work as a NOC Engineer for an MSP, where I spend most of my day troubleshooting network issues across multiple client environments and managed properties. It’s a fast-paced environment that exposes me to different networks, configurations, and challenges.

My question is: How much can you really learn and grow as a Network Engineer working for a company whose primary business is finance rather than networking or IT services?

In this case, I assume I would mainly be responsible for the company’s internal network infrastructure across multiple offices throughout the United States, rather than working with different clients and network environments like I do now.

For those who have made a similar transition, how was your experience? Did you find that working in an enterprise environment helped you develop deeper networking skills, or did you feel that the exposure was more limited compared to working for an MSP?

I’d appreciate any insights, especially from network engineers who have worked in both environments. I’m trying to understand the potential for technical growth and career development in this type of role.
