Non-English Names Most popular baby names in the Faroe Islands (2025)

Context: For those who don't know, the Faroe Islands are an Atlantic archipel located more of less like in the barycenter of an imaginary triangle whose vertices are the coasts of Iceland, Scotland and Norway. The population is around 55.000 people (and like New Zealand, actually less than its total sheep population) and politically are an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, in a similar status to Greenland - very high degree of political autonomy with their own Parliament, official language and even officially recognized football/soccer national team (and handball, they have already qualified for both the men's and women's World Cup!) but still dependant on stuff such as defence, foreign policy and monetary policy from Copenhagen, e.g. the Faroe Islands are not part of the European Union unlike mainland Denmark. It's also the only 'country' in Europe with a fertility rate above the replacement rate (2.11 children per woman last year)

Incidentally, much more boys than girls were born last year (358 vs 284) as you might notice looking at the stats.

Names with the same spelling but containing different diacritics (e.g. David/Dávid, Klara/Klára) have been counted separately.

Source from the official Faroese statistical board.

Discussion Have you ever met a person with an extremely gendered name who is of the opposite gender? For example, a boy named Gretchen or a girl named Geoffrey?

If so, what do they think of having that name? Fully supportive of them if they choose to keep it!

Discussion How do you pronounce Wilhelmina ? It seems to vary a bit

So it seems most people where I live that I’ve asked pronounce it

Wil-huh-me-na (sort of a subtle breathy h)

But I’ve heard others say

Willa me na

Wil hel me na

Baby Names Is Selena a good name for an Asian baby girl?

Hi everyone! My husband and I are expecting our first baby girl next year, and we're considering the name Selena.

We both like the name, but when I mentioned it to my nurse, she described it as a “unique name,” which made me wonder whether it's an unusual choice in the US.

I'm hoping to choose a name that works well for an Asian girl growing up in the US — something that sounds natural for a little girl but also suits her well as an adult. I'd also love to hear whether there are any potential downsides or associations I should be aware of.

We're open to other suggestions, too! We'd love a name that's feminine, timeless, and easy to pronounce. Her last name is Yang.

Thanks so much for your input!

Name List Please help me choose a username and stick with it

• Upvotes

Guys, I need your help choosing a username. I have OCD and struggle with perfectionism, which makes this decision unnecessarily difficult for me. I keep changing my username or overthinking my choices because I feel like I need to find the perfect one. Even when I find a username I like, I start questioning it and wondering whether another one would be better.

I'm tired of going back and forth, so I'd like you guys to choose one for me. I'll go with the top suggestion and commit to it without changing it. I don't want to keep searching for something better; I just want to settle on a username and move on.

Please suggest a username you genuinely think is good. It doesn't have to be perfect—I just need a little help getting out of this endless cycle of indecision.

Baby Names Isabelle/Isabel May or Emilie/Emily Mae?

I'm expecting my second and we're stuck on girls names, we really can't decide between spellings for Isabelle/Isabel May or Emilie/Emily Mae. The last name is similar to 'Goodman.'

We are Canadian and I much prefer the French spellings (Isabelle May/Emilie Mae) but I'm concerned Isabelle will often get mistaken for 'Isabella,' which I hate. I'm also concerned if we go with Emilie she will constantly have to correct people or explain her name ends in -ie?

Also, I know Isabelle/Isabel and Emily are popular names, do they seem too basic and/or over used?

Are these legitimate concerns!? How realistic are they? Are there better options that maybe I just haven't come across? Name nerds please help!?

Discussion What is my neighbor’s name?

A boy from our neighborhood was playing with my son and when I asked his name he pronounced it “Ar-tay-mee”. I have never heard this name before! Does anyone know how it is spelled and where it’s from? In my head I spell it “Artemie”.

He lives down the street and I’ve never seen his parents so I can’t ask them. I also didn’t want to be the weird adult asking for too much personal information about a kid I don’t know. So I’m turning to namenerds!

Baby Names Is it weird to name our daughter Greta when her cousin is Margaret?

We're expecting our second daughter in a few weeks and have mostly settled on Greta. One thing keeps nagging at me: our niece, who would be her first cousin, is named Margaret, and Greta is a short form of Margaret.

That said, nobody calls our niece Greta. She goes by Mar or Maggie

Would you see this as an issue? Would it feel like the cousins share a name, or is the link too distant to matter? Curious how others would think about it.

Fun and Games Challenge: Girl names that end with -he?

Maybe a strange request, but I’m having a difficult time thinking through names with this ending in -he…

All I have is Blythe/Blithe or Ruthe… not really a fan of either

Discussion Help expand my list! What are some female names, in your opinion, that aren’t gentle or soft or overly feminine sounding

Oh yeah basically the title :3
I prefer this style over names like Sienna, Clara, Victoria, Bella, Evangeline

I think my chosen name Dagmar qualifies
So do Agatha, Ingrid, Walburga, Hildegard, Barbara, Griselda, Zillah, Achsah in my opinion

Baby Names Baby boy names Ukrainian/ Ecuadorian

Looking for baby boy names. Our first son is Dominic. My side of the family is Ukrainian and my husband’s side of the family speaks Spanish. Looking for something that can be said easily on both sides and not too fancy/outlandish. We like the names Marcus and Lucas. Also considering middle names but nothing yet.

Non-English Names japanese family names (would it be disrespectful to change mine?)

i (30f) am american and my grandmother on my dad’s side is japanese. she changed her last name when she got married to my american grandfather; that is currently my last name.
i am divorced (i never changed my name when i got married) and lately i’ve been feeling disconnected to my last name/sense of identity.
my question is would it be disrespectful to change or at least socially go by grandmothers japanese last name? is there cultural significance to japanese family names? my grandmother is very inspirational to me and i would to honor her as matriarch in my family.

Name List Am I boring in my baby names list?

I would call myself a very conventional, with my extended first name of Alexander would it be imprudent to give a son of mine that middle name?
I have a weird thing with shortenings as the full name because I’ve been ingrained by the idea of I’m naming a future adult not a toddler.
My preferred names are:

Boys:
Joshua (favourite)
Euan
Benjamin
Asher
Joseph
Oscar
Robert/Bobby as a standalone
Jace (idk what the extension might be)
Bryn
Arthur
Edmund

Girls:
Ruth
Leah
Alba
Libby short for Elizabeth
Jocelyn with Josie as a shortening
Georgia
Molly/Mollie
Milly/Millie

What do you think of these? And how would you extend some of my suggestions?
Am I just downright boring with names?

Name Change Should I go by Joey or Joe?

I'm 29 years old, my middle name is Joseph but I've been called Joey my whole life. I've been doing some thinking, and Joey seems a little... immature? Most of the time I'm fine with it, but sending out job applications or important emails as "Joey" seems a little goofy, or maybe that's just me.

What do y'all think? Should I start making the shift and introducing myself to people as Joe or stick with Joey as I've always been?

Looking for a four or five letter name that works well in Spanish. Already have a Mila Delfina.

Top choice so far is Talía Jessica but still unsure! Also like Cloe but my partner dislikes. We do like Cleo tho and Ámbar (can't use)
