Legality/Laws Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the remaining gun laws (both state and federal) before doing anything.

Edit 4: Okay, this wasn't the point of this post, but we have an interesting update.

The federal court just ruled in Silencer Shop v. ATF that since suppressors, SBRs, and AOWs have a "$0 tax," the system is unconstitutional and therefore these items are no longer can be regulated by the NFA.

Suppressors and SBRs are still illegal in NJ. We have two separate cases in the DNJ dealing with that right now. There's additional complications that occur with SBRs with this ruling, but let's not even concern ourselves with that right now.

However, as AOWs are legal, NJ residents can benefit from this ruling. As of right now, plaintiffs of this court case are protected under an injunction and therefore do not need to comply with NFA regulations relating to these items. This essentially means those protected do not need to submit a form 1 to the NFA to make an AOW.

  • There's two distinct groups that are protected. Stores (and by lesser extension, their customers), like PSA and Silencer Shop, and Pro-2A orgs.

  • Stores are legally able to sell completed AOWs to their customers with just a 4473 (and NJ's standard paperwork). This does not mean if you've ever bought something from one of these stores past or present, you can freely make an AOW. This portion of the injunction only protects selling and purchasing AOWs.

  • The far more interesting (and useful) portion of the injunction involves pro-2A orgs like the Gun Owners of America (GOA). Members of the GOA are fully protected under the injunction and therefore are given the same level of protections as stores like PSA. This means that GOA members (among a select group of others, look them up) CAN create their own AOWs without complying with the NFA. This only applies to active members.

With all that said, don't take this post as a green light. Everything is still very much up in the air and there's only a select few stores in the US currently selling suppressors with just 4473s, while PSA is claiming that GOA members who buy completed pistols or rifles FROM JUST PSA can make SBRs without a form 1, but nothing explicitly about AOWs. You're all adults and any actions you take are your own, but it's smart if you wait.

What's even more confusing is that this case was consolidated with Jensen v ATF, and the verdict is treating the injunction separately. For example, Jensen v. ATF had the requirements to engrave on a form 1 gun removed but didn't get relief regarding AOWs, while Silencer Shop v ATF did get relief for AOWs. Does being a member of the FPC (which might not even get relief at all, due to filing as FPCAC, this is also unclear) and a GOA mean you benefit from both lack of engraving requirements on an AOW? No one really knows at the moment.

Long term, we're realistically going to see the NFA system for these items completely disappear for everyone. This will take some time, as usual. Assuming that our silencer and SBR cases go through successfully, NJ residents will be able to benefit eventually.

----------------------------------------

Edit 3: Everything below this edit is unfortunately irrelevant for the time being. NJAG requested a motion to stay the mandate to appeal to SCOTUS. For the foreseeable future, the mag and assault weapon ban is still in full effect.

Edit 2: NJAG requested a motion to stay the mandate. All of this information could be moot. Sit tight

ORIGINAL TEXT:

While this is an exciting time, take a deep breath: many laws still apply after the mandate takes place. Don't get caught in a legal battle because you misunderstood the current legal landscape.

Here is a recap of the critical information:

The mandate will stop the restriction on magazines.

  • There are no specific legal definitions separating rifle, pistol, or shotgun magazines—they are simply magazines. Yes, you can have a 30-round magazine in your AR and a 17-round magazine in your Glock, despite the pistol AWB remaining in place.

The only part of NJ's assault weapon ban specifically declared unconstitutional applies to rifles.

  • The named list of banned rifles (such as the M1 Carbine) and NJ's specific rifle "evil features" definitions no longer exist.

  • Those now-repealed evil feature restrictions that previously applied to semi-automatic rifles that accepted a detachable magazine were the following:

    • Folding or telescoping stock
    • A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon
    • Bayonet mount
    • Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor
    • Grenade launcher mount

Edit 1: In short, there is no longer a need to pin your stock or muzzle device (if it's over 16") in order to be compliant with NJ's now unconstitutional law when the mandate goes through.

  • This means you can buy rifles that would have once needed compliance work as well as remove your compliance work on rifles you own, as long as you follow federal laws. You can also have a flash hider, bayonet mount, and grenade launcher (lol) on a rifle with no repercussions.

The rifle AWB repeal does NOT repeal the pistol or shotgun AWB, nor does it legalize suppressors or short-barreled rifles (SBRs) in New Jersey.

  • "Pistol" style ARs remain effectively off the table, for the time being. Pistol and shotgun AWB rulings were remanded to NJ courts, which must still officially rule them unconstitutional. This will take time. Additionally, a separate case regarding suppressors and another for SBRs is currently moving through the state court system. This will also take time.

You MAY be able to convert your "Other" into a rifle.

  • Federal regulations strictly require a rifle to have an overall length of at least 26" and a barrel length of at least 16". These are non-negotiable.

    • Note that overall length for a rifle is measured in its longest configuration (e.g., with a folding stock extended). If your muzzle device is permanently pinned and welded (P&W), it counts toward barrel length (e.g., a 14.5" barrel with a muzzle device that adds 1.5" to the total barrel length with a P&W, while also accounting for the ~0.6" of thread overlap).
  • Do not, under any circumstances, put a stock on your "Other" if the barrel is under 16". That creates an illegal SBR, and NJ will likely make an example out of you.

Beyond that, virtually every other NJ gun law remains in full effect—including laws governing transport, ammunition, carry permits, transfers, and purchasing. Refresh yourself on these rules before taking any action.

Also, as it currently stands, until the mandate goes through, nothing has officially changed.

  • The odds of AWB and mag laws being enforced is very low, but this is just a reality of the situation. Things could change at a moments notice, and you don't want to be in possession of this stuff. You're all adults though, so I don't need to lecture you on this.

Of course, I'm not a lawyer.

If you have anything I should add, let me know.

Shopping Advice Recommendations for a gunsmith to mill Glock 17 gen 3 slide

Since my gen 3 would need a dove tail plate or the slide milled to install my osight x on it. I was looking for recommendations on gunsmith/shop (bonus points for it being in Cumberland county or close lol) that would be able to mill my oem slide for RMR footprint the sight uses and retain the iron sights. Was thinking of just going dovetail mount but rather compare the prices and do a little more research before I make a decision

Range Time North Jersey Clay Target Club (NJCTC) a Hidden Trap and 5 Stand Gem

Back in April I was talking to my friend who lives in Jersey as I had grown frustrated with the place I was shooting at as they dramatically increased the cost of a game of Trap and Skeet and they were rationing clays due to a shipping delay so I could only shoot two games at a time. I will not disclose the name of the place as I still love that place overall and aside from these issues I still think it is a great destination. I also want to remain focused on highlighting NJCTC.

My friend told me about this awesome trap range close to his house that he had discovered maybe a month prior. The fact that he lived right there for years and never noticed it is why I am writing this post. This place is too good to not make sure my fellow Trap shooters know about it.

What's to like?

  • Pricing is awesome. With a $260ish yearly family membership each game costs $7!
  • With that membership you can get ammo delivered to the club at very competitive prices.
  • I have never had to wait more than one round before shooting a game and usually have no wait.
  • NO Trappers! Machines are voice activated.
  • Well maintained and looks nice
  • They have doubles
  • They have wobble
  • They have 5 Stand
  • They have 3 Trap fields and 1 5 Stand

I love trap because it is the fastest paced of clay sports. I like to shoot every day I can, but can't typically commit hours of time to play. With trap, all shooters are on the firing line and you can shoot a game in as little as 15 minutes. Maybe faster, typically not slower than 20 minutes. If shooting solo, it is even faster.

The regulars are all great people.

The place does not rent, so you will need to Bring Your Own Shotgun.

For years I used to go to a rental place and the cost adds up, not to mention the wait times. If you make the determination that this is a sport you love and want to shoot often, I highly recommend checking out NJCTC.

General Chat Time for a new FFL: Mine told me I can't build an Non-NFA Other and to 'stop interpreting the laws' lol

Just had a bad experience with Charles from South Jersey Firearms. I asked him if I bought a stripped lower receiver he would mark it as an other firearm/receiver on the 4473.

Long story short, he told me to wait until June next year??? due to possible laws getting changed here in NJ, that the lower receiver itself needs to be stamped "other", that I'm not allowed to build one, that the barrel needs to be 16 in length no matter what, that it will still need to be marked as rifle after I finished building the firearm???? that if I get pulled over cops would take my gun and that I was trying to build an SBR or a Pistol... LMAO

He then confused it with an AOW build even after I tried to explain, or showed him pre built others for sale in NJ. I ended the conversation when he told me to stop trying to interpret the laws but never answered me back when I sent him the actual facts from NJ.GOV or asked him to read the explanation for Sec C question 24 on the back of the 4473...

If you have an accent like me, I would look somewhere else. I believe that is part of the issue here, even though I'm a US citizen. If my man only knew I'm a republican and the biggest advocate against illegal immigration, maybe the outcome would be different. Oh well

Does anyone recommend a FLL in South NJ that actually knows his shit, or don't mind someone with an accent ? I'm closer to Delaware memorial bridge.

Gracias 😉

How Do I? Anyone have any luck with getting an Extar EP9? Does it cost an arm and a leg to do so? Any information greatly appreciated.

Wanted an EP9 for a while now, it always seemed like an impossibility in NJ.

Is it possible? What is involved if so? Is it going to end up costing double what my buddy in MD paid ordering direct from Extar??

Thank you for any help, have a safe weekend.

Seeking Training 24/7 ranges in Central or North NJ, or in western Pennsylvania?

I have a weird work schedule and am unable to go to regular ranges.

Are there ranges that are open 24 hours a day in Central or North NJ, or even in western Pennsylvania? I know of Old Bridge and Union Hill. Are there any others?

How Do I? Lower parts assembly mag release trouble

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m putting together my first stripped lower and of course I ran into an issue with the first part I tried to install.. I put on the mag release button and twisted it onto the post, but the threads got misaligned now it won’t tighten down like it’s supposed to and it also won’t come off so it’s stuck on there and just spins but doesn’t move forward or backwards. Has anyone had this issue and is there anything I can do to get it off? I’ve tried holding in and spinning the lever part and also I tried gripping it with pliers but I can’t get it to budge

Shopping Advice New Glock 17 gen 6 owner- need cleaning kit recommendations NSFW

Just got my first pistol. Searched the subreddit and am overwhelmed with recommendations. I have my first training class tomorrow but was wondering which cleaning kit I should order to maintain this firearm. My budget is less than $150.

Additionally I'd appreciate any video recommendations you can post so I can learn about this as well. I believe tomorrow's pistol training class goes over how to break down and disassemble the weapon.

Thanks in advance.

Context: firearm Glock 17 gen 6 with holosun red dot eps carry

Edit: thanks for the replies. I appreciate it

Final edit: class was awesome! Reviewed pistol safety, got tips on isocelese triangle stance, grip and finished up with a mini range session (50-3 my instructor used to zero my red dot). All in all it was a blast. Looking forward to future trainings. Oh I also got a free cleaning kit (albeit rudimentary one) but I have the borresnake ordered as well and some random CLP 2 oz jawn.

Shopping Advice Reccomandation for a new handgun?

Post image
55 Upvotes

I am currently eyeing a Glock19 Gen 6. Mainly cause I like glocks and their proven use. Just got approved for a permit and I’m searching around.

I had a Taurus G3C which I loved but gave to my dad when he got a license.

Any recommendations for the replacement?

Glock 19 Gen 6 is versatile if I ever pursue a conceal carry permit.

Range Time Skeet shooting at WMA ranges -- biodegradable clays required?

I'm looking to skeet shoot at the WMA ranges (Clinton, specifically), and can't get a clear answer on whether biodegradable/"eco-friendly" clay targets are required. The WMA guidelines just say that "sporting clays" are permitted without specifying bio, but that all trash must be packed out. I don't see how a person could pick up every shard of every clay pigeon, which makes me think you'd need to use bio ones or be accused of littering. But I also see that both bio and non-bio clays take months or years to dissolve, so neither really seem environmentally friendly and would leave fragments behind for a long time. Anybody skeet shoot at WMA ranges and can tell me what they use?

Relatedly, what are the best value clay targets these days? I see some folks saying White Flyer has really dropped in quality. Is that true, or are they still good value? What about Champion (Academy brand)?

How Do I? Selling question/advice in NJ..

Been out of the game for a few years now. Have a few firearms I’m considering selling. I know the days of F2F transactions have changed, where is everyone selling things nowadays?

Last transaction I remember doing was about 4 or 5 years ago that we had to meet at a FFL to transfer a rifle.

Mainly looking to get rid of a SCAR 16s at the moment, but handguns may follow

When cops arrest someone and bring them to jail, they don’t unload their guns before putting it in the lock box at the jail

So why do we have to do it before storing a handgun in a lock box in an unattended vehicle?
