Is learning academic vocal technique first like learning anatomy before drawing anime?

Hi everyone! I’m a beginner singer and I have a question about where to start.

My goal is to sing musical theatre adjacent stuff. My number-one vocal inspiration is Alessandro Juliani (I love his rich tone and musical style).

I actually have a background in visual art. In the art world, almost every professional will tell you that it's much better to start with the academic basics (like realism and anatomy) before you try to draw a stylized format like anime.

Is it the same with singing, or are classical/academic vocals and musical theatre entirely different styles? Should I find an academic vocal coach first to build my foundation?

Thanks for any advice!

Fulfilling a promise to my late father. Here is my raw, emotional cover of "Bring Him Home."

• Upvotes

My dad passed away last week. Before he left, he told me to never stop singing.
This is "Bring Him Home" from Les Misérables. Singing this right now was exceptionally difficult, but I needed to do it for him. This one is for you, Dad.

Etiquette about asking about being in a dance number?

I’m in a local production of SpongeBob the Musical, and it’s my first time doing any theater since I was around 10ish (I’m 25 now). I’ve been in all of the ensemble choreography numbers, but what I was really excited for was the tap dancing in ‘Not a Loser.’ Looking at our schedule, I was not called for that song. I was wondering if it would be rude to ask our choreographer if there could be a spot for me in the song? I really would not want to come across as rude, entitled, greedy or break any sort of etiquette, I was just super excited for it since I tap danced when I was younger and was hoping to try it out again! I would completely accept a no if the choreography was already set with the 3 ensemble cast members that were called, or for any other reason. I wouldn’t want to mess up the work that’s been done so far for it. Thanks for any advice you can share!

I took a drama class in high school and for a prose assignment I chose a comedic twilight parody and I’m trying to find it but I can’t anywhere. Anytime i try to search it up the Vampires Suck spoof pops up.

Advice wanted - Character shoes

I’m working towards becoming a professional show
skater ⛸️ - with a limited classical dance background. I’ve taken classes here and there at skate camps throughout the years, and my skating discipline is Ice Dance, so I have body awareness and rhythm, but I’ve decided I need to get quicker at picking up choreography for shows and just get more dance technique, so I’m looking at taking jazz and musical theatre classes. I have my first precision jazz class in a couple of weeks (I asked the teacher if my background is enough for the standard of the class and she said I’m for sure welcome) so I just wanted some advice on footwear so I can fit in, but not look like a poser wearing shoes that are beyond my capabilities if that makes sense?

I’ve done a bit of research and it seems that if I were to purchase a pair of shoes for this class and other musical theatre (and maybe jazz?) classes, a suitable option would be a character shoe? I’ve been looking at various brands like Capezio and Bloch, and also on websites like Move Dancewear and there’s so many options so I feel a bit lost! I’d appreciate any advice or recommendations you might have, e.g. does the heel height (2in vs 3in) matter a lot, should I go for a lower heel, or should I even show up with a pair of clean sneakers instead and just wear those?

If you think a character heel would be a better option, would something like this be a decent option?

Any tips, suggestions or anecdotes from personal experience would be great!

Grease Licensing

Hi all. I’m a producer who is currently in the process of applying for the rights to do ‘Grease’ at our local community theatre. We run a pretty large operation and have a great theatre, plus a sizeable budget. Because of this, we’re not too worried about paying for the rights for the movie songs (Grease, Sandy, Hopelessly Devoted, You’re The One That I Want).

My question is, once we receive the production materials and have permission to use the songs, what does incorporating these look like? I’ve done some googling and can’t seem to get a straight answer as most of the discussions are outdated a little.

We’ve got a fantastic musical director who can arrange band parts for the songs (and we’re hoping we can arrange the whole score a little differently if we get permission, the current orchestrations are nowhere near rocky enough)

My main concern is working these into the script. Do we have an option for acquiring materials with the new songs included, or do we have to do that ourselves? If so, is there a guideline on where we need to fit these in?

I’m sure our licensing rep can answer these questions in more detail once we send of our proposal, but would love to get some guidance before we do.

Reposting this here because someone corrected me saying “It’s an eleven o’clock number, not a twelve” but when I pointed out (albeit a little passive aggressively) that they misread the post, I got downvoted and they got upvoted and I feel like I’m having a psychotic break because I’ve read my post multiple times and I never call it a twelve o’clock number and I feel like I’m insane

Not allowed to participate in school comp

Hi guys ☹️☹️ posting here just bc I'm really upset about it. So my school is a big theater HS and our state holds competitions. For the past 30 years in a row we have won states every single year except for 2 years. I go to this school part time, and attend early college courses the other time. I want to get my BFA. I transferred to this school this August just for the theater.

I was told today that I'm not allowed to be in the musicals that we take to states because I'm not a full time student. Im so devistated. I've genuinely been crying for hours. I don't know what to do. Our director already tried appealing to the state to have an exception made, but it didn't work. I just can't stop crying

Audition songs for Monty from a gentleman’s guide?

Hello! I posted this in like two other communities but I didn’t get any answers so I’m asking here! I am trying to make an audition booklet for one of my biggest dream roles in any musical ever, Montague D’Ysquith Navarro from the musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. I’ve been wanting to play this role for a few months now and I think I would do an exceptional job with it!

Does anyone know any good Baritenor audition songs for this role? Anything comedic, anything classical sounding, and anything I have to sing with a British accent. Thank you!

(And if anyone knows any good songs for the role of The D’Ysquith Family, please drop them below too! Thanks!!)
