discussion Why doesn't anyone ever mention Neil Diamond's "Just For You"?

Whenever people talk about classic albums, I never hear anyone mention this one.

How many all-originally-written non-Beatles albums from the 60s have 6 big hits that everyone has heard and love?

Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon

Red Red Wine

Cherry, Cherry

I'm a Believer

Shilo

Solitary Man

And there's other good songs on there too, other than those big hits. He also released Kentucky Woman at that time but didn't include it on this album.

How many incredible hits do you have to write to be considered a classic album?

The Cars put 6 big hits on their debut, and everybody always brings it up as a great 80s album.

Rumours is full of hit songs, and everybody always brings it up as a great 70s album.

But Neil Diamond does it in the 60s and nobody cares?

I understand that a lot of people hate hit songs and good music because their ego tells them that they can't be cool if they allow themselves to enjoy great music if that music also happens to be popular. But why do you give the Cars, Fleetwood Mac, and Boston a pass, but not Neil?

discussion Billy Corgan stated that Travis Barker is the most influential drummer of the past 30 years. How big of an impact did Blink 182 have in the late 90’s to early 00’s?

Travis Barker was a guest on Billy Corgan’s podcast, The Magnificent Others. Corgan stated that he thought Travis Barker was the most influential dummer of the past 30 years. This got me thinking about bands that had an impact as I grew up. “Nevermind” by Nirvana was huge. Everyone with a guitar could play a Nirvana song. Now I’m not really comparing which is a better album, but after Nevermind really the biggest album that made an impact for other teens my age was “Enema of the State” by Blink 182. I’m a guitarist, and a big music fan. There are bands that came up (from my age group) that I can tell were listening to the exact same thing that I was growing up. I can remember getting into all kinds of different bands that were not so well known. Many that were not “pop” punk, but I don’t think I would have had access to their music if that one Blink album was not such a big hit. Corgan’s comment got me thinking about this. Not just Travis Barker, but was Blink 182 the most influential rock band from the late 90’s to the early 00’s outside of the grunge rock movement?

discussion When did the concept of concerts being elaborate, theatrical shows become popular?

So I went to Twenty One Pilots’ hometown show at OSU Stadium last night, and it was actually my first big concert (I’ve supported friends’ bands at bars and local venues before but that’s not really the same).
I was absolutely blown away by the energy they were able to keep throughout their three hour show and just how elaborate it was, and I already had high expectations based on knowing their performance style. Just off the top of my head, there were hundreds of fireworks set off, a car shaped drum set intentionally set on fire, glitchy, distorted visuals, an elaborate drone show, the OSU marching band performing a song with them, and multiple nods to their lore. And I know I’m forgetting so much.
That got me thinking: when you think of a concert, a lot can come to mind, but the basic concept is a band playing music for an audience. It seems like most (popular at least) musicians go beyond just playing their songs live and incorporate theatrical aspects into their performances nowadays. Even the ones with more “simple” performances will usually have interesting visuals or unique outfits to catch the audience’s attention.
When exactly did this whole style of performance become the norm for musicians? I know it’s sort of always existed with theater and circus, but when and why did this become so popular with singers and bands?

discussion Bad Omens

*If you don't understand what I wrote very well, it's because English is not my first language; I'm trying to improve it.

I have listened to every album Bad Omens has released, from their debut to their latest, and what I can say is that they tried to copy the change Bring Me the Horizon made, but, in my opinion, they did it too badly. Let me explain my point of view on this post before Bad Omens fans come here to insult me; obviously, not all Bad Omens fans.

First, start from the beginning: the album debut, "Bad Omens", is by far their best work; as for the music, the mix, the lyrics, everything is perfect on this album. When I started listening to their second album, called "Finding God Before God Finds Me", I liked some songs like "Kingdom Of Cards", for example, but when I continued listening to the album, I started to notice the change from their debut album; obviously, they maintained the metalcore sound of their debut album but started to include some elements like synths, which, from what I heard after having listened to all the albums, I believe that they take influence from Bring Me the Horizon when they pass from the deathcore/metalcore to a metal more softly mixed with synths and adding electronic things. This was good, but not as good as the first one. But the change that they made in the third album, "THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND", was horrible in my opinion because they literally went from one extreme to another with the change of styles in their music, and it's good to make changes or have more range of styles, but in this album they went too far with the change, because they seem more like an electronic band in the majority of the songs except in "Just Pretend" and "ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE", which are heavier songs than the others. In "CONCRETE JUNGLE \[THE OST]", they went in the same way as the previous album, but in this case, this album is way better than the previous one. In conclusion, the first album is their best album for me, but that attempt to copy the style of Bring Me The Horizon didn't work. From my point of view, I think if they had continued with the style of the first two albums, they would have become one of my favourite bands.

I would like to read your opinions. Thanks. As I wrote before, this is my opinion, and if you don't understand something, remember that English is not my first language, and I'm trying to improve it. Thanks.

article Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love [Pop]

Rating: 9.6/10

Favourite Track: stupid song

Least Favourite Track: purple

This album was just beautiful. In my opinion, not a single bad song. This is the first full album of Olivia Rodrigo’s that I've fully listened through and I must say that I am super impressed. I’ve heard singular songs from Olivia before and I’ve enjoyed them, but this was just so good to finally listen to more. There’s a great balance between slow ballads and upbeat tracks that created an interesting and fun listening experience for me.

The sound of the album is just amazing. Oliva is an amazing vocalist, and the instrumentals within her tracks also really click with me.

Standout track:

stupid song: YES YES YES I LOVE IT SO MUCH! I’ve heard this song prior to listening and this is what drew me to listen to the album and it’s just sooooo good.

I must also mention the climax in cigarette smoke is so amazing and it’s so good.

Nothing needs to change about this album.

So, so good.

discussion Censored songs that are better than the explicit version?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Me & my friend are currently just listening to the “forgotten favourites” on YouTube & this song come on, I didn’t even find out there was a explicit version until this earlier this year, maybe it’s that reason why I think “sensual seduction” is better and rolls of the tounge better than “sexual seduction”,

Can anyone give some other examples, me and my friend said we can’t think of any case other than this when the censored is better

discussion What's a band or artist you genuinely believe deserves more recognition? I'll go first: Highly Sedated.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I'm curious if anyone else has that one band or artist they absolutely love but can't understand why they never became bigger.

For me, it's Highly Sedated, a Swedish-Lithuanian electronic band who genuinely changed my life, especially during COVID. I know saying a band changed your life might sound a bit dramatic, but their music really did mean that much to me during that period, and it still does today.

They formed in 2015, with five members: Patrick Ray, Verner Westlund, Leon Somov, Sebastian Dollinger and Hannes Söderlund. Their music is quite difficult to categorise because they mix electronica, techno, rock, trip-hop and other influences. It's one of the things I love about them. They don't sound like they're trying to fit into a particular genre or follow whatever happens to be popular.

Steve Angello, formerly of Swedish House Mafia, recognised their potential and signed them to his SIZE Records label. He once described their music as "as analogue as digital can get", which I think is a pretty accurate description. They've got that electronic sound, but there's something very human about it, particularly in the vocals and the way their tracks build.

Their debut album, All We Have Is Now, came out in 2017, and I honestly think more people should know about it.

Some of my favourite tracks are Existence, Got Some Water, Make Love, Revolution and Don't Be A Victim. They also collaborated with Steve Angello on Flashing Lights, which is another brilliant track.

What I particularly respect about them is how seriously they seem to take the creative side of making music. Around late 2017 and early 2018, they apparently felt they'd become stuck in their routines and decided to rent an old wooden theatre in the Swedish countryside to reconnect with why they started making music together in the first place.

That period led to Revolution, which draws inspiration from 90s British trip-hop artists like Massive Attack and Portishead. I love the atmosphere of that song and the message behind it, particularly the idea that you can acknowledge mistakes you've made in life without allowing them to define who you are.

They've even performed with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. I think that says quite a lot about how versatile their music is. Not every electronic band could take what they do and make it work in an orchestral setting.

But beyond all of that, the biggest reason I'm mentioning them is personal.

During COVID, their music was one of the things that helped me get through what was a strange and difficult period. I spent a lot of time listening to them, and there was something about their sound that just clicked with me. Sometimes it was the energy, sometimes the atmosphere, and sometimes it was simply being able to put my headphones on and forget about everything else for a while.

It's difficult to explain properly, but certain songs can bring you straight back to a particular time in your life, almost as though nothing has changed. Highly Sedated have that effect on me.

I'm not suggesting everyone will listen to them and feel the same way. Music is subjective, after all. But I do think they're incredibly talented, and it genuinely surprises me that they haven't received more widespread attention.

I also think there's something quite frustrating about seeing artists produce music that feels genuinely different and interesting, only for them to remain relatively unknown while other acts receive enormous recognition. That's not a criticism of successful artists, because plenty deserve their success. I just wish there were more opportunities for bands like Highly Sedated to reach people who would probably love their music if they knew it existed.

I'd love to see them make a proper breakthrough one day. I think they deserve it.

Anyway, that's my choice.

What about everyone else? Who's the one band or artist you think deserves far more recognition than they've received?

I'm particularly interested in hearing about artists whose music has meant something to you personally, rather than just someone you think is technically talented.

And if you recommend someone, mention a couple of songs worth starting with. I'd genuinely like to give them a listen.

So I came across a list of all Jay Leno shows in 1998 and I see that Third Eye Blind played twice that year . In January, for "How it’s going to be" and in October 8th for "Jumper". The "How it’s going to be" video is on YouTube and easy to find . But the "Jumper" on is impossible to find . No audio , no visual . All I got is this picture from the show. Anyone has the video for the show ? If so can you make it public ?

discussion Where do you find new music to listen to?

I have been stuck. I have no idea where to find new artists I like. I have Pandora but I can't ever seem to find what I'm looking for and the algorithm is kinda stuck on my usual likes. For instance one day I really wanted to listen to some Stevie Ray Vaughan style blues guitar but without lyrics but I couldn't find what I wanted and gave up. How do you all go about finding new artists?

A little surprised to do a search and not find this has ever been posted. Bill Owsley (Alabama/Nashville) was a true gem of a human and musician. Prior to this solo release, his band Semantics featured Millard Powers (Ben Folds, Counting Crows) was signed to Geffen.

Always loved his first solo recording, produced, engineered, and recorded by Bill at his own home studio.

So as the title suggests, I recently discovered Maphra & am completely amazed by her raw talent!!! I've listened to her covers several times & I'm OBSESSED!!! 😭😲 Her covers of "Doomed" by Bring Me The Horizon & "Unethical" by Faouzia are exceptionally amazing imo!!! Wanna know something? I've listened to all kinds of music: lighter music, Japanese, Korean & all the way to the very heavy stuff... And no song in my entire life has made me cry, but her "Unethical" cover. It hit me right in the feels! 😭😭😭
