Hi all I’m looking to buy a compact 4x4 and looking for something advice. I’m torn between a mk1 suzuki vitara/sidekick/geotracker and a 1996 swb pajero 2.8. My situation is that I have a 30 minute motorway and 25 minute back roads commute and I need something that is capable on farm lanes and fields and narrow roads for work. I’m also looking for something I can fit my friends into with my camping and snorkelling gear and head off the week. I live in an area which gets quite snowy and icy in the winter.
There are quite a few pros and cons of each but I’m mainly interested in hearing from people who have driven them what they are like on the motorway? Are the stable, comfortable and able to keep up with traffic? And what are their running costs like? I’m practically concerned with the pajero being diesel, is it really that bad? Any advice on which is the best pick in my situation? 🙂 ps I’m based in the UK

Hey folks I have a 2001 Limited, it stopped running a while ago but I I just got to working on it. So when it stopped running it would turn over and just click. It’s had an oil leak, but the day it did this it leaked a questionable amount out in the parking lot. Since then I’ve gotten new battery, tested and cleaned the starter and still nothing. Anyone know what could be the problem, thanks!

Marco! (Colorado Springs)
I haven’t seen a single montero here. Seen two in Denver…..so I bought one.
I have a lot of questions. First one is how hard, worst case scenario, are the 02 sensors to change?
I need suspension refresh , I have most of the parts except shocks and springs. I want a 2” lift. I keep reading about this one recommended over that, but that was 5 years ago and I can’t find anything current as recommendations.
Fording kit? Like a real one, not just an aesthetic snorkel.
Etc etc.

I have a 22 montero sport and when i shift to P it shows this message (The SHIFT TO P POSITION) appears while the lever is in P. The lever has forward/backward play when it is on P and pushing it toward the dashboard firmly clears the warning and had to press the switch button 2 times to close the vehicle

I inherited my Grandpa’s 1984 Montero Mitsubishi manual transmission. I don’t know much about cars let alone fixing them up. I never learned to drive manual, mostly because the people that taught me were impatient then-boyfriends and they couldn’t teach me in the way my brain learned. The transmission is busted because he accidentally towed it while it was in gear.
I’m pretty sure it was an I4. How crazy would it be to just totally switch out the drivetrain to automatic? Does it totally ruin the integrity / magic of the car? Originally we thought it would be an amazing rock crawler, but life took a different direction and I don’t think that’s feasible in the next 2 decades and it’ll get more use as an automatic. Also, any idea of what would the cost might be to do so?

I found these at a scrap yard. Will they fit in my 2004 3.2 DiD, and will my traction control still work?

Hi everyone,
I don’t really have any major problems with my 4M41 at the moment, but I noticed that the coolant is foaming. The coolant is actually fairly new.
• It does not smell like exhaust gases.
• There is no smoke from the exhaust ..not blue, not grey, and not white.
• The engine is a Mitsubishi 4M41.
I know foaming coolant can sometimes point to air in the system, a bad radiator cap, an incorrect/mixed coolant, or in worse cases exhaust gases entering the cooling system. But since there’s no exhaust smell and no smoke, I’m not sure what to think.
Has anyone had this with a 4M41?
Any help would be really appreciated!

I’m ready for the headaches and heart aches and this will be my project just to learn more about these. Been watching a lot of Montana Montero. A belt and water pump and hydraulic tensioner is otw for me to do these coming weekends and a change oil and filter.
Got this Montero last April and i got it for dirt cheap of $2500 he was originally asking for $4000. Rusts on the body are not bad, undercarriage has a little but the frame looks solid, it drives and starts real good and 4WD works all gears and everything goes. I got the price down because of these lights and I’m sure it’s the first things I gotta address and work on, I was trying to figure out the ABS issue, researched about it and I don’t really hear a chirping sound when I press the breaks so I’m not sure if I have to change the accumulator, I’m guessing I have to get a new HBB? as for the traction or stability control I’m guessing I gotta get i to the wheel sensors and check for voltage. Lastly the check engine, went to Auto zone and was told it’s the cat converter, guess I have cleaning to do?
Let me know what ya’ll think. I’m a DIY kinda guy and love to learn, I like challenges too when it comes to cars so I’d like to hear ya’ll insights.

I’ve recently bought a 1998 2.5 with the winter pack and it’s a fix up but I’ve been looking for parts for it and found out there kinda hard to come by. Anyone have an intake tube I could buy from em or know of a good place to order parts from I’m in Texas.

Picked up the kit from lusso off-road. Went through the passenger side underneath the carpet and drilled one hole from the fender side into the cab.
Zip tied everything in, sealed the penetrations. Normally the traction control is great. But we've all been in situations where we don't want it turning on.
Especially now that I have a front and rear LSD I started imagining situations where I don't want the brakes engaging or momentum loss.

Hi all!
So I joined the crew about a year or so ago! I have a gen 1 with the 3.0L. I had been driving around for a couple of months with some known issues such as a break leak and worn bushings but one day on my way to work the engine just died out. I had my music on so I didnt hear anything but there was no stutter or anything. Just driving one moment and costing next.
I've been troubleshooting it when I have free time the past 6 months or so but can't figure it out for the life of me. It seems to be an ignition issue, the first thing I found was spark jumping wires which led me to a pretty rusty distributor so I replaced the spark plugs, plug wires and distributor. It didnt fix anything but i keep telling myself it was worth it...
After all this I checked the ignition coil and it passed the resistance tests but when I put the plug wire from the coil straight to ground I have an orange spark. So just because I get decent prices for parts I bought it too and still no change.
I'm not a very experienced mechanic and I feel I'm missing something obvious. If you made it through all this and have any input I'd greatly appreciate it. I don't really have anyone in my personal life to ask questions about stuff like this.
Thanks in advance. I attached a video of me trying to start it tonight.

Body has several small rust spot, AC works, interior is pretty clean and complete. Clean FL title. Asking $2800 for this gem.

Hello Montero friends! I have had a weird experience with my gen 2, it died pulling into a parking lot when i stopped and couldnt get it running. It would start really bad and right when i put it in gear it would stall out, even when feathering the throttle. So i waited about 20 minutes with the hood up and the battery cables disconnected to reset the ECU. And then it started just fine? The only code ive been dealing with is the p0400 code because of a small leak in the pipe, im thinking this could be the egr valve or the crankshaft sensor, but no code for that one. This has happened before and just a clearing of the code fixed it for me. Any insight would be great, thank you all!

Hi guys, I'm thinking of buying some TT tires for my Pajero.
It would have to be at least 33 and that it would not be necessary to remove the tabs or make cutouts.
To what extent can I put it taking into account these aspects?
Can I keep the original rims or should I buy others?
They cannot rub against the fenders or the bodywork
*It's slightly up

I’m not super familiar with Monteros beyond being a fan of their looks. I’m hunting for a daily and happened upon a 2004 Montero that currently is getting some brake lines fixed. They have it listed for $2000 - it is the 3.8 auto - black on black, 253k miles. I talked to the mechanic, it’s clean on the underside but needs two brake lines by the wheel well (guess it’s poorly positioned and rust often?)
is this crazy?
Water pump timing belt and serpentine belt all at the same time at around 150k miles - so 100k miles ago, then ignition switch is spotty, but that seems like it?
what’s the thoughts here?

Howdy yall!
I have a 2003 Montero Sport xls with the 3.5 engine
I recently replaced both valve cover gasket, sparks and cables do to major oil leaks
During the job I did not fully remove the throttle body as it had a coolant hose running to it, so I just hung it off to the side
The hose is now leaking a few months after, when I did the job I couldn't tell it was soft and had a feeling this would happen
I've been patching it for a few weeks with that self adhering tape that was rated for coolant system Temps
I can not for the life of me find the part number for this thing.. its a smaller molded hose with 2 90s at either end. It runs between the coolant pipe that runs down the middle of the engine to one side of the throttle. I'm worried about just using bulk hose
So two ask... 1: can anybody show tell me what the part number is for the pictured hose?
2: is this hose even needed? I feel like it is just to warm the throttle body... I'm in STL and we don't really ever have to deal with extreme cold for long periods. Can I just cap this off some how or is there a common workaround for this?
Thank you in advance!
