Mold in a Dorm Room

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Hi fellas, I am an intl student in Istanbul. I live in a dorm. Recently, there has been very bad rain in the city, which perhaps affected the dorm walls too. Could be a leak from the outside through the roof.

I am attaching photos. Yesterday we told the manager to fix the situation. He said it'd be done today but no response (as I expected!).

In essence, I have a few questions:

  1. How bad is it at the moment? Can I still sleep here no? It is quite close to my bed.

  2. But let's say even if they clean it, I am sure there will be mold left deep within the walls. How about that? I will have to stay here for 8 more months, so change rooms??

  3. How do you think it should be cleaned? I don't have experience in this.

  4. When cleaning is done, pores will be released into air. Shall I stay somewhere else for a night or two?

Thanks!

how bad is this and what is the best course of action?

My bathroom ceiling has a lot of mold, and I noticed today that it condenses during showers and drips this unpleasant yellow water on me. I’m considering showering somewhere else until the problem is resolved. We’ve used mold testing kits in the past, but they always show mixed results, with multiple molds appearing as both harmful and non-harmful. My parents haven’t addressed the issue yet, but it’s likely affecting me in some way that we haven’t yet discovered.

Is this mold behind the paint?

I have lived in the house for a few years. The laundry room is in the basement and the concrete block is painted over in glossy white paint. Recently my dehumidifier gave out and I saw a fluorescence on the walls as I was removing it. The paint began to peel and I see this behind it. The blue green is obviously the prior paint color, but the black spots is what bothers me.

It doesn’t seem to come off when I scrubbed it a little bit. Is this the porous block color or mold?

A Critical Analysis of the CIRS and Shoemaker for Anyone Dealing with Mold Illness and Thinking About Starting the Protocol

Before you start the protocol, there is something you deserve to know.

Firstly. Experiencing chronic, unexplained symptoms is terrifying. When conventional doctors turn you away with a clean bill of health based on standard tests, it is natural to search the internet for answers and find a community that offers a label for your suffering.

Before diving into the science, I want to speak directly to anyone who has already invested in this path. If you bought into Dr. Shoemaker's protocols and found relief, I am not trying to take that away from you. If you have supplements or habits that make you feel better, I have no right to tell you to stop. Most importantly, if you bought into this protocol, I am not calling you foolish or naive. Shoemaker exploited your vulnerability using legitimate-sounding medical jargon, and you are a victim of a very sophisticated ploy. I am speaking from experience, as I fell for an almost identical ploy in the past. That experience is precisely what made me extremely skeptical of these claims in the first place.

This article is primarily written for those who are currently at a vulnerable crossroads, about to spend their life savings on an unproven method fueled by hysteria over pseudoscientific claims. I know that people who are already deeply invested have skin in the game, will unlikely be persuaded anymore due to sunk cost phenonenom, but if you are currently considering this protocol, you deserve to see the science behind this protocol and the other side of the coin before taking that leap of faith.

To start, I want to be completely clear: mold exposure is damaging, and damp or water-damaged buildings can cause genuine serious health problems. I have seen mold cause various illnesses in many people around me. Recognizing that mold can cause varying levels of illness does not mean accepting dangerous pseudoscientific claims. What is deeply concerning is a charismatic figure presenting a cultish claim that twenty-five percent of the human population cannot heal without a proprietary protocol. That claim is scientifically unfounded and dangerous. It creates widespread hysteria among vulnerable people, driving them to sell their homes, destroy their personal belongings, spread the hysteria to other people who are made suggestible becuse of uncertainty and face personal bankruptcy, all while remaining ill because their underlying condition may never have been caused by mold in the first place.

For many seeking answers, that internet search often leads directly to Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker and the Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome twelve step protocol.

It promises everything a sick person wants: a clear biological villain, a definitive gene test, and a structured path to recovery. However, before you spend thousands of dollars, throw away your personal possessions, or take risky medications, please take a step back. It is important to look closely at the science, the safety records, and the commercial ecosystem behind the Shoemaker protocol and how he came to the conclusions that he did.

The Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy and the Gene Myth-

The most famous claim in Shoemaker's theory is that approximately twenty-four to twenty-five percent of the global population carries susceptible HLA-DR genes. According to his framework, these genes render individuals biologically incapable of excreting mold toxins on their own.

To understand how Shoemaker arrived at this conclusion, one must look at his methodology. He started with the absolute conviction that his patients were suffering from a common, innate biological flaw. Because he was so convinced he was right, he began sifting through his patients' complex HLA gene data to find any commonalities among them to find the cause for their illness.

It is the same as someone finding twenty random people who like chocolate and searching through their traits until finding a common link. If you look long enough, you will inevitably find something, leading to the absurd claim that for example: people with brown hair are inherently prone to liking chocolate. This is precisely why the medical community cannot accept his conclusions without a healthy control group for comparison.

This process is a classic example of the Texas Sharpshooter fallacy, where one shoots at a barn wall and then draws a target around the bullet holes. The HLA gene region is exceptionally diverse in human beings. If you dig through enough genetic data from any group of people without using a healthy control group, you will inevitably find mathematical patterns by pure chance. Shoemaker simply picked the most common genetic combinations among his sick patients and declared them to be the CIRS genes.

When independent geneticists and researchers cross-referenced these gene patterns with general population databases, the flaw in his logic became undeniable. The exact same HLA gene variations exist naturally in roughly twenty-five percent of healthy people worldwide who never develop any symptoms. When confronted with this fact, Shoemaker adapted his theory to state that healthy gene carriers were simply not yet exposed, creating a circular argument that could never be proven false without years of costly studies. Furthermore, when challenged by peers to present rigorous, peer-reviewed evidence to support his claims, Shoemaker famously remarked that God was on his reference list, effectively placing his framework beyond the boundary of scientific critique.

Diagnostic Theatre and Re-defined Reference Ranges-

Shoemaker wrapped his practice in highly complex medical vocabulary. He ordered expensive and rare blood tests, such as C4a and TGF-beta1, for which he personally re-defined the reference ranges. Because these inflammatory markers fluctuate naturally in response to stress, lack of sleep, or a mild viral infection, almost any patient tested could be made to appear dangerously ill.

He also popularized testing for MARCoNS, a nasal bacteria that he claimed blocked recovery from mold. In reality, MARCoNS is a harmless surface bacterium commonly found on healthy human skin and nasal passages. Shoemaker took a normal part of the human microbiome, gave it a frightening label, and prescribed strong antibiotic nasal sprays to treat it.

Similar patterns exist with commercial urine mycotoxin tests. Major public health bodies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have repeatedly noted that healthy individuals excrete mycotoxins in their urine every day from ordinary diet choices like coffee, nuts, and grains. Excreting these compounds is a sign that your kidneys are functioning normally, not evidence that toxins are trapped inside your tissues.

The Medical Prosperity Gospel and Seed Faith Business-

What truly unsettles me here is the striking structural resemblance between the Shoemaker ecosystem and the mechanics of prosperity televangelism. Televangelists build fortunes by telling desperate people that their suffering is caused by hidden spiritual blocks, promising complete salvation if the follower only sows a large enough seed of faith in the form of financial donations. When the miracle fails to happen, the evangelist never admits a flaw in their doctrine. Instead, the victim is blamed for lacking sufficient faith or for failing to follow the commandments precisely.

Shoemaker's framework operates on the exact same psychological exploit. Sufferers are told that their illness stems from an invisible biological poison that only his proprietary protocol can address. Patients are asked to sow their own seeds of faith by pouring thousands of dollars into specialized laboratory panels, urine testing, practitioner certifications, and unproven nasal sprays. If a patient does not get better, the system shifts the blame back onto the victim. They are told that they must have missed a hidden microscopic spore in their living room, or that they did not follow the twelve steps with enough devotion. Critical voices, medical boards, and mainstream scientists are dismissed as corrupt agents of an evil system, creating a closed belief loop that feeds on human vulnerability.

Courtrooms, Peer Isolation, and Medical Disciplinary Action-

For years, Shoemaker worked as an expert witness in lawsuits involving property damage and personal injury claims. He circumvented court standards by creating a small network of Shoemaker certified practitioners who testified on each other's behalf to create the illusion of consensus within the medical community. This finally ended when defense attorneys realized his game, and brought in their own independent immunologists, leading courts to disqualify his testimony as scientifically unproven.

Many doctors were drawn to his work through authority bias and the sheer complexity of his literature. Shoemaker presented a highly technical model that appealed to practitioners who genuinely wanted to help difficult cases and felt unsupported by standard medical tools. Joining his network gave practitioners the feeling of being part of an elite group that understood what others missed, ensuring they no longer felt helpless in the face of their patients' suffering.

The most serious aspect of Shoemaker's career involved direct risks to patient safety. In 2013, the Maryland State Board of Physicians issued a formal disciplinary action against him. The board found that he prescribed potent, experimental medications without medical justification. In one severe instance, he prescribed Procrit, a powerful anemia drug intended for cancer and kidney disease patients, to an individual with normal blood levels. This significantly increased the patient's risk of dangerous blood clots or stroke. Facing full revocation of his medical license, Shoemaker closed his clinic in January 2013 and retired from clinical practice.

Psychological and Financial Impact-

The protocol can actively worsen a patient's condition through the nocebo effect and hypervigilance. Convincing an individual that their body is genetically defenseless against invisible toxins creates a state of chronic fear and an obsessive compulsion regarding hygiene, mold spores, and indoor air quality. This continuous stress response directly amplifies physical symptoms.

Furthermore, patients on these protocols are frequently advised to discard their furniture, clothing, books, and heirlooms as contaminated. This advice often leads to severe financial hardship and social isolation, cutting people off from their support networks when they need them most. While Shoemaker no longer practices medicine, his Surviving Mold platform continues to monetize paid contrast tests, practitioner licensing, and expensive compounded therapies like VIP nasal spray.

A Path Forward Based on Evidence-

Alternative medical frameworks led by charismatic con men always thrive on the gaps left by conventional medicine and the unregulated nature of the wellness industry. When a standard physician states that they do not fully understand a complex set of symptoms, it can feel scary. A confident, complex answer can them seem appealing by comparison, even when it lacks evidence, but just because it gives that much needed reassurance, that someone has "got you."

If you are dealing with unexplained health issues due to mold, remember that your body is not permanently broken or genetically poisoned due to some genetical lottery.

Is this mold and is it concerning? I dumped white vinegar on it.

I discovered that a very minor amount of draining water had accidentally been pooling against our house. Location: Southwest

Update: thanks for your comments! I’ll use some boiling water and wash it off.

Help! Post home inspection panic

Can anyone tell me what I’m looking at here? More advanced flooring in basement because they have a home theatre there today - it’s put together with layers of plywood, OSD, and wood flooring. Under is neoprene and wood framing - appears to be some sort of peg board helt within a metal frame as well. It’s dry, slightly flaky, but no idea if it’s actually mold? Any thoughts? Desperate and mildly panicked here because this could be our dream home and this is the main red flag… inspector couldn’t say what it was because of the nature of the complicated floor.

Is this mold on my filing cabinet?

Picked up a file cabinet at an estate sale. It was free!
But when I brought it home and started cleaning it, I found raised black spotting along the sides.

Is it mold?

It’s a metal cabinet manufactured to look like wood. It doesn’t look like a peel and stick surface that I can easily remove.

Any tips on whether it can be cleaned, or suggested to toss, are much appreciated!

Mold or foxing on magazine?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I recently bought a magazine overseas, and I knew there was going to be age-related signs because of when this magazine was published. However, when it arrived, the magazine had a lot of stains and I wasnt sure if it is all totally age-related. I learned about foxing and kept researching but its still unclear to me because there are some spots in the photos that i circled that are not reddish-brown and look a bit weird. The staples used seemed to have rusted. Ive kept it in the packet it arrived in and left it on the floor just in case. I appreciate any insight and help!

This is my home. About 4 months ago a contractor installed this wallpaper. It’s been hot all summer. On the other side of this wall there is a utility storage area, but it’s probably 15 degrees cooler than the house. No water pipes inside this wall and it’s very unlikely to have leaks inside. This wall has no insulation. I moved the couch and found this. Considering replacing drywall on both sides and insulating the wall while I’m at it. Proximity to the outlet seemed strange.
