Support Waiting to Try Until After Residency + Coping With Baby Fever

Hello! My husband [PGY2 of 4Y program] and I [non-healthcare career] want to be parents eventually and plan to TTC post-residency. Recently I've been hit with baby fever and love the idea of TTC spring of PGY3. We've talked about it, and can't really change up our timeline because

(1) he wants to be able to enjoy the money and leisure time that'll come with being an attending before having a baby. We're financially comfortable right now, but if we had a baby between unpaid maternity leave, daycare, all the other baby expenses, and student loan payments our budget would become a lot tighter

(2) he doesn't want to miss out on things because he's busy working resident hours

(3) we don't love the state his program's in, so we're planning to move once he finishes. We'll both be working parents, so once we move it's important to us to be at our jobs long enough to qualify for FMLA/state's parental leave and be able to get on the waitlist for a high quality daycare, which means TTC in 2030

I agree with him that it's better to wait and obviously would never pressure him to have a baby before he's ready! I'm very proud of him and he's phenomenal at balancing residency with everything else in life, it's just hard knowing how much residency is impacting our family planning

Community Assessment

Hi all,
I am studying social work and I am assessing how our community is doing. More specifically, I am looking into how having a partner in a medical profession can impact someone and their relationship. My partner is currently in their 3rd year of medical school and the process has not always been easy on us. My hope is that by identifying what our needs are we might better be able to create change. I have a few questions below. If you are able to answer any of them I would really apprecate it

  1. What are the unseen parts of having a partner in a medical profession?
  2. What are the ways your lives and relationships have been affected by your partners being in medical professions?
  3. What kind of outside forces (government policy, healthcare systems, etc.) are supportive/unsupportive?
  4. What makes them supportive/unsupportive?
  5. Where do you feel change is most needed and why?
  6. If you could change one thing today about having a partner in a medical profession what would it be and why?
  7. What are the benefits of having a partner be in the medical profession?
  8. What are the downsides?

Thank you everyone who is able to participate!
