Announcement A Clarification to Yard Sale Sundays

Hello all. We would like to add some clarifications to what is and isn't allowed on yard sale Sundays. We want to save everyone time, so please read carefully and ask any clarifying questions below so we can clear them up for everyone.

Every week on Sunday, users may post promotional content including (but not necessarily limited to):

  • Rooms to rent or sublet
  • Parking spots
  • Textbooks
  • Selling/buying tickets to a McMaster related event*
  • Help wanted
  • Requesting tutoring services
  • Club-affiliated events, fundraisers

Posts that are not permitted:

  • Advertising for products, services of any sorts, including tutoring and paid class notes
  • Self promotion of apps or websites**
  • HSR passes***
  • Non-McMaster related events or fundraisers
  • Homework services
  • Multi level marketing recruitment
  • Buying / selling course seats
  • And as always, anything illegal, against reddit ToS, or otherwise dangerous

When buying or selling, even and especially digital items, arrange to meet on campus or another safe place. Don't get scammed.

Please note all posts are subject to removal per moderator discretion. Posts are considered advertisement even if they are not direct advertisement (discord servers which offer such services on the side, free trials, etc)

Please ensure you use the correct flair when posting (Yard Sale Sundays). Any threads of a promotional nature posted other than Sunday will be removed and you will be instructed to repost when appropriate.

*Reselling for a profit is strictly prohibited

**Applications which are directly relevant to McMaster may receive exception at moderator discretion, provided they are free to use, generally helpful, and collect no personal information.

***McMasters agreement with HSR prohibits exchange of HSR vouchers. As such, we cannot condone trading as there is nothing preventing these codes from being voided at a later date.

Thank you.

-Mod team

Discussion Working student

Hi everyone. This may not be directly school related, but I’m a second year student who works 16 hours over the weekends and usually some closing shifts on Friday nights. As of the start of the school year, I’ve began to HATE weekends solely because I have to work. I work in a Fortinos bakery, and I’ve been working there since before I came to McMaster. My income from there allows me to have so many of the things I do, but at the same time, I feel so miserable about those 8 hour shifts. I know this may sound ungrateful, and you better believe that I know how blessed I am to even have a job, but I can’t shake this feeling off. I want to quit and find another job, but also feel like that would be a huge mistake. I’d be happy to not have to go there anymore, but I would regret it at the same time, if you know what I mean. I’ve met so many amazing people through this job and this job has done so much for me. I’m not sure what to do. Any advice?

Discussion For the engineers who got into more academic schools but chose Mac, do you regret it?

After completing my first month of engineering here at McMaster I am starting to regret my decision in coming here. For some background information, I am from Toronto and I got into mechanical engineering at every school in Ontario. I chose McMaster as I wanted to experience living independently without relying on my parents or being in a city that I’m already comfortable in. If I went to UofT, I would’ve lived on campus first year at utsg then commuted from then on.

Currently, I regret McMaster for a few reasons. 1. I feel like despite being more of a party school than UofT, it is still very very academic and I have not really found a community here. 2. Honestly this is more on me but I feel like the prestige is really getting to me. Anytime I tell someone I got into UofT (I don’t brag to people I just got asked this during the typical welcome week conversations), they ask why I didn’t go and that it was their top choice. Adding onto that, I feel like people get praised so much for getting into UofT. 3. Another kind of bad reason but I’m pretty home sick and I miss being in a lively city where you can eat almost any type of food within a 20 min walk radius.

Edit: there seems to be a question that people are asking which is “if you wanted prestige and also to move out why not Waterloo?” I chose McMaster over UofT and Loo for one common reason, the student life and community. From what I know anecdotally from family and friends aswell as personally going to tour all of the campuses, McMaster had the most vibrant community.
To clarify even further, here were the pros and cons for each school that I had lined up

UofT
Pros:
- Save money by living at home
- More prestigious (if that even matters that much)
- Being in Toronto which I love (although I may have also only started to appreciate this after moving to Hamilton)

Cons:
- Very studious
- More difficult to make friends as it’s a commuter school and you don’t spend as much time on campus
- Don’t experience being independent

McMaster
Pros:
- Community and students / party life
- Less difficult academically (more time for design teams and personal hobbies)
- experience living independently

Cons:
- Less prestigious than other two
- Hamilton is kinda mid

Waterloo
Pros:
- Prestige
- Living independently

Cons:
- Student life (seems miserable)

There are plenty of things that I love about McMaster but when I think about UofT, I can only think of the pros while thinking about McMaster only brings forward its cons. Maybe I got too used to the benefits of McMaster or I am being unrealistic by hoping for the best of birth worlds.

I honestly just wanted to rant and maybe get some advice on how to get over this mindset.

Discussion Housing suggestions (Incoming Postdoc)

Hi everyone,

I'm going to join McMaster as a Postdoc in 2 months. This will be my first time in Canada, and I dont know much of the housing. Please share your suggestions for the housing?

I see many posts regarding student housing, but so far couldn't for researchers. Any postdocs here who can help me navigate it?

Thank you

Academics Patho Midterm Nursing

Hey! I'm in second year nursing and have my first patho midterm coming up on Monday.

For anyone who's taken HTHSCI 2LA2 before, how did you find the midterm? Were the questions mostly straightforward or more application-based?

Also, what helped you study effectively? Any tips on what to prioritize or how detailed the questions get would be really appreciated!

Question Do men like being approached?

I know the answer is to be situationally aware. But when I go to the gym and I have a hard time deciphering if I had a chance with this guy. I know men deal with the sort of anxiety around rejection, so I'm looking for suggestions as an introverted person. I feel like he's very attractive, but I haven't had the opportunity to do anything other than make eye contact with him. Like many guys, my worst fear is for them to think, "aaaa look at chopped shit coming at me" lol.

Health Question to Eng majors, how bad is the hair fall

I’m in CS and used to joke about hair fall, I had thick luscious hair with no signs of hair fall, but for the past 4 months or so it’s so bad that I think I’m gonna go bald soon. Please give me a solution I’m so depressed about this, I already have enough stress in life I don’t wanna look at my hair in the shower and see 200 strands in my hands again

Hi, so I saw the announcement posted yesterday for us Life Sciences students, but there is barely stuff in that list to choose to TA... it's only Life Sciences courses. Does anyone happen to know where we can apply to be a TA for courses like Sustain or Innovate, and just other courses in general? Or is that not open yet? Thank youuu!!
