Tour/Show Announcement Totorro live in BKK

Yo, so Totorro are actively touring Asia and we were humbled to open for them for their Bangkok show. It was a sweet night full of energy, rain and chilling conversations. My band NUMAN is still active, happy to have lots of local support.

The guys are really nice and we were happy to help them in any way backstage and onstage. It was a privilege to have them and I hope more European math rock bands can consider Thailand as their next touring destination - I can help with my Math Rock Appreciation connections.

They should be playing in China today with CAN festival and then to Taiwan with Elephant Gym. Awesome feeling and awesome experience!

Piglet - Lava Land

I held off on attempting to find the last track on this album as it isn't a part of the album on my streaming service in the song Mad Science. Following Plastic Stars and Cotton Highways was an absolute treat. This album is a part of my soul.

New Release Album Release

Hi everybody---

I recently released an album with math rock/mid-west emo elements, and rather than just share it unsolicited... I wanted to ask for your bands or your solo music. Or if you are not an artist yourself, what are some dope bands you have found lately? If you choose to ask, I will share the link with you.

Vocals "Never Meant" by American Football

I don’t listen to a ton of math rock, but did growing up.

I relistened to “Never Meant” by American Football… and I SWEAR there is a song with a nearly identical riff.

I know this is an iconic riff and I could just be misremembering the song, but I swear there was a song that opened with basically the same riff and the lyrics were… different.

Maybe it was this song.

but maybe it was Tera Melos or someone?

Is there a song with a very very similar riff. Like near identical?

Help Nathan from HORSE the Band ❤️

Post image
76 Upvotes

For those who don't know him, Nathan is the vocalist of HORSE the Band, a band that has been part of the experimental and independent music scene for years.

I'm sharing his GoFundMe because I want to help an artist whose music has meant a lot to me. Independent artists often struggle to get by, and sometimes the community that grew up listening to them can make a real difference.

If you know the band, enjoy their music, or simply believe in supporting independent artists, please consider donating or sharing the campaign.

Even $5 helps. If you can't donate, sharing this post is also valuable.

Let's show Nathan that his music still matters.

Mathrock Suggestions

Hello!

I’m a multi-instrument musician and I love mathrock, and I’m looking for songs that I can learn that could improve my guitar / drum mathrock skills. That might’ve been worded weirdly, but, Im basically just looking for cool mathrock songs I can listen to and obsess over and learn so I can get better at playing mathrock in general.

Analysis of clipping.'s Story 2 (Math but Hip Hop)

I've found that while this is a rap song, it definitely belongs here.

While some people have already posted their analysis of this song's rhythmic structure and correctly counted the numbers, I found that nobody of the few examples I've read/watched so far painted the actual whole picture. They missed some points - especially on the middle part. Maybe somebody did already say this; then I missed to review their analysis.

I posted this under a youtube video a while ago; this is a slightly modified version.

So on the part after the 4/4 in Story 2... The first thing you'll notice is that the very last beat of the 4/4 part is actually played as a triplet. it goes on to basically play a 4/4 in triples, BUT: Common notation for such a part is often to write it down as a 12/8 with 3+3+3+3 subdivisions, because you don't have to deal with the triplet notation, changing tempo. To do this, you assign the tempo of the quarter notes from the old part to the tempo of the dotted quarter note of the following part (for example, before: quarter=N bpm, after: dotted quarter=N bpm). So they actually do a metric modulation that increases the tempo by a factor of 1.5. But since they want to preserve their pattern, which would suggest 8 bars of 8/9 at this point, they sneak this in too in another way. The way they're doing it is by playing only 6 bars of the 12/8. If you do the math, 6bars x 12/8=72/8. And guess what? 8bars x 9/8=72/8 also. This feels especially weird because we're used to new parts beginning after 4 or 8 bars, so having the six bars feels like a weird overextension. The 12/8 part also serves as a reset right back to the beginning of the song; it's a 3/8-based pattern again, and we're now back to counting up in 8th-notes again.

Afterwards, we get another 8 bars of 2/4. The cool thing about this is that if you look at it as an 4/8 in 2+2, it's actually a metric modulation, coming from the previous part, which was 3+3+3+3. This way, we speed up by another factor of 1.5, for a total of 2.25 times the tempo from the beginning. After that, they continue to 8 bars of the 5/8 time signature. You'll notice that you can count the vocals as "1 2 1 2 3", so it's sub-divided into a 2+3-pattern - just like at the start of the song. Then come the 6/8 and 7/8, just as before. Check the lyrics (following below). Each line has exactly 7 syllables and they each have their accents following a 2+2+3-pattern:

He keeps walking towards the house

Rather what house is still left

No intention of stopping

Letting the smoke take his breath

Some strong arm knocks him aside

Mike falls to the ground and cries

Why won't you just let me die?

Why won't you just let me die?

The final part is 8 bars of 4/4 again, but it's played in constant 16th notes, finishing the second cycle of counting from 3 to 8, but with a double time-y feel.

For anyone who doesn't know Argentina has the greatest crowds in the world.

They opened up a circle pit before breakdown of Goodbye. Even from Loneliness they were jumping around. Pogoing is as normal to them as breathing.

I saw them in Tokyo at the 25th anniversary show, the European leg and also here in Latin America. Quite interesting the crowds haha.
