Success How I stopped
Well, I never thought I’d be back here on this subreddit with a success story. It’s been about nine years since I was active here.
I’m 26F, I had a severe case of MD all throughout my teens. The triggering incident was my parents deciding to relocate our whole family to another country when I was 11. I would be scared and overstimulated, I felt alienated from my classmates, I was made fun of for speaking the local language with an accent, and ended up retreating inwards where at least I had control over the stories and fictional characters i created in my head.
At around 18, I eventually realized I had a severe problem and would spend hours on this subreddit, reading about other people’s experiences and trying to self diagnose.
There was one post in I stumbled upon that turned my blood cold, and I remember it nearly nine years later. It was a guy confessing how he recently became a father and how he had voluntarily let MD destroy his family life because he would rather spend time daydreaming than raise his kid. He said he would sit on the floor staring blankly at the wall for several hours every day while his kid begged him to play. I read that and cried.
Reading that was probably my wake up call to turn my life around and take this shit seriously. I don’t mention this with the intent of shaming anyone-No one knows what he might have been going through, and I have absolutely no right to judge. But in the moment, his post was the only thing that helped me realize the severity of this disorder. Wherever he is today, I hope he was able to get the help he needed.
Removing negative influences and triggers from my life was the only thing that worked for me. Toxic friends, toxic workplaces, anything that could overwhelm me or pull me towards wanting to participate in escapism. Getting a remote job was a game changer. I think it got better after that. It took many years but I stopped around 21. My self confidence really improved after i graduated and started working, so there was less of a reason to escape. It turned out that external factors mattered way more than I thought. I know a lot of teens struggle with this disorder- I always thought I would be stuck with it for life. Stick it out guys. You never know.
My DMs are open for anyone who wants to talk.
I’m still guilty of spending way too much time in my head these days but I find myself dreaming about things I can apply in my real life. Career goals, traveling, creative hobbies etc. it’s still self indulgent daydreaming but it’s far more action oriented than it was before. The maladaptive part is gone. I’m onto conquering my next demon now which is adhd 🥲
