I built a [Slicer] deck and ended up taking it apart after just five games. It was an absolute dog. I couldn’t get [Slicer] out fast enough, and even when I got him down on T2, I couldn’t get equipment out and attached to him. I felt bad being the “scary deck” in such a vulnerable state! I also felt like the deck was lacking synergy. Nothing seemed to work together!

So, now I’m going all in on speed.

I rebuilt [Slicer] with a lower curve, equip cheats, and some counters/deflects. I’m feeling better about it, but I still feel like something is missing. I just can’t put my finger on what.

Something tells me it still isn’t fast enough, even with the new additions.

Hey everyone!

I'm fairly new to Magic (just started playing earlier this year) and immediately wanted a rat tribal deck.

My first build was a classic Marrow-Gnawer, but over time it started feeling a bit too linear, slow, and repetitive. I decided to expand into more colors and made the switch to Wick, the Whorled Mind. The concept of building up a massive Snail token with rats and flinging/exploding it directly into my opponents' faces sounded hilarious.

I started with a base list online and tweaked it heavily so I could use as many cards as possible from my existing collection. After playtesting it with my regular playgroup (we usually play around Bracket 3), I noticed two main problems:

1. It's pretty slow (it takes way too long to get the engine going);
2. It gets shut down easily.

I'd love some advice on how to speed it up, balance it out, and make it more resilient, ideally without spending too much or stripping away the core flavor.

Looking for pointers, I have cards to make it bracket 4 but am looking to make it bracket 3 if possible I just dont wanna win with inf life drain. There's a slight theme id like to stay apart of i juat wanna make sure all sides are covered. Need a better draw engine but couldnt find one that fits with walls

For a while now, I’ve been collecting and organizing my notes on Magic deck-building, and I’d like to share them here in case they help other players. A lot of what I want to share is basic statistics and maybe "obvious" to really experienced players. But I still think just having a resource to look things up can be helpful to anybody. I also have to say that, apart from writing about it to understand it more deeply, limited helped me the most to gain an intuition for the math and baseline in a game. Here is the link.

I focus on concepts like the baseline we follow in a typical game, when and how to break that baseline, and how to account for those situations during deck-building. I also cover the math behind hypergeometric distributions, using lands in an EDH deck as an example.

Diving into these concepts has helped me greatly to improve my own decks and understand why certain plays my opponents make are so strong. It often comes down to recognizing when they can break the usual baseline (like extra ramp and card draw), how likely their deck is to support that, and whether they can follow it up with the right plays.

So I have a pile of cards to make a Cycling Deck with, for Gavi as the commander. I know she's not the strongest, but it's a bit of a pet commander for me so I'd like to keep her as the commander and like to keep a vague theme of cycling and card draw.

If anyone can help work out what the best deck I can build from this pool would be that would be amazing... (of course, a lot of the cards in this pool are proxies).

I've build a few before but there is always something off and I really don't want to give up on this deck just yet.

Power level wise everyone I play with is at a 3 or 4, whereas previously I used to play this deck at like a 2, back in 2021.

Wanting to get back into Modern with a very unconventional strategy. Was hoping for some input on what to cut and how to alter the sideboard to deal with meta strategies and/or staples that could hinder my win condition. Any and all thoughts are appreciated. (Dont roast me until you playtest the list ;) )

I recently got back into mtg arena and am looking to build my first decent standard deck. When I quit arena last time around I had an oni cult anvil deck that I loved, and I want to do somthing similar to that in the form of weapons manufacturing. I'm mostly f2p and I have a ton of common and uncommon wild cards, but only 22 rare and 11 mythic so I don't want to waste the little I have. The brass's tunnel grinder is in there just cause I have it. The deck is at 61 cards so I need to take somthing out, but any advice on what I could change would be greatly appreciated. I don't expect to get to diamond or mythic, but I'd at least like to try and get to gold or platinum while I save up more wild cards for a better deck.

The idea is to ramp really hard and stay alive long enough to put out Ugin and protect him for 2 turns. Then I bring out Extinguisher Battleships to wipe the field and bring out my most powerful colorless cards. I made the deck with what I have, but would really like suggestions on how to best protect Ugin and my lifepool while ramping up. I want to be able to bring out a bunch of cards on one turn.

Mostly just trying to see if this concept is viable in the current meta, but I'm not even expecting a 50% win rate on it.

Need some help narrowing down this so i can start working on the mana base. Sorry if I set up the link weird first time posting here. I feel the main idea of what its going for should be obvious but I don't mind explaining if it doesn't come off as straightforward as I thought. would just like some ideas of what to cut or add so its not so creature heavy. I am hoping the big pay off is that I can make a couple tokens from Thousand Moons Smithy that Brudiclad can make the rest of the tokens turn into, to swing for game. Been tweaking a Jyoti Manlands deck for the best part of two years, and finally got to test it out in paper!

Deck works great, plenty of protection and way the deck uses lands means it's basically impossible to flood.

The only issue I've had is actually winning.

"Making a bunch of lands big and swinging in" is probably the go-to, but I lack the evasion necessary to get my creatures to connect.

Give me your best trample/unblockable/flying tech that is at least somewhat synergistic with the deck as a whole (considered Archetype of Imagination here, but it's a little fragile).

I’m not very good at building decks but think I’ve gotten some pretty decent cards in here. B&W deck with the classic “you lose life I gain life/I gain life you lose life” gameplay.

I’m way over the card limit so I could use some cuts, but I’m also down for hearing swaps or recommendations. I wanna get this deck ready asap to play with some friends.

Price of the cards doesn’t REALLY matter (obviously don’t recommend black lotus or something insane) because I will proxy what I don’t have/can’t afford atm until I’m able to purchase them (I’m liking alternative arts in proxies lately anyway)

Hi there, after leaving magic for about 8 years a friend of mine asked me to teach him how to play. We've been playing around with the free welcome decks we got from our lgs but lately he's been asking to play against my old pioneer deck. The deck itself is nothing particularly special, some llanowar elves, elvish mystics and 3 mana creatures like steel leaf champion. However, it's on a very different level than the welcome decks, and while it probably wouldn't win any tournaments, I'd like to build my friend a mobo red aggro deck that's about the same level. I don't really have much experience with deck building in general, how would I go about doing this?

I’m trying to make a stax and small creatures deck as a way to counter a friends big aggro deck and it’s going well so far but I’ve realised that the commander chromium isn’t the best even though I quite like him and I haven’t got a solid wincon besides maybe some infect cards. Today, we'll explore The Great Goblin, another fun commander from The Hobbit.

I am running Bello, Bard of the Brambles commander precon. I have made just three small changes. Nothing real impactful, mainly just cool cards that fit the theme. The one thing I am running into is I either get my mana up, but don’t draw the strong artifacts and enchantments this deck depends on, or I have a couple of those on my hand but no mana to build off of. I don’t wan t to change the theme of the deck, but looking for something that can help my card draw. I think if I can just stimulate more card draw then I’m able to get deeper into my deck to find those strong cards.
