I was told whippets were big nappers when I got my whippet puppy. They meant ADULT whippets. For the first 6 months of having her it felt like she slept a total of 5 minutes. I am pretty used to puppy training but she tested me in new and cruel ways, I was so tired. Now she's napping next to me so it eventually came but for a while there I was just like "how do you turn her off?!" I went to the vet and was like "I am worried for her brain development, she NEVER sleeps" and the vet was just like yep, that's the dealio.
18
u/holyfcukkk 9h ago
I can hear my vet saying "that's the dealio" and now I can't stop laughing(idk why it's so funny to me)

But do you already pay money specifically to get no yoga done?
On the flip side, you’d be paying money to play with fun, adorable puppies.
Ok, you’ve won me over. I’d also do this. Solid win.

I did this but with baby goats and yes, yoga kinda gets put on the back burner 😂

True. Baby goats are a bit more chill though, and actually enjoy standing on top of us, which I think is the point
10
u/Turquoise_dinosaur 4h ago
When I did puppy yoga I spent almost the entire hour cradling a sleeping Labrador pup. If I had to guess, I did maybe 5 minutes of actual yoga poses. As someone who loves dogs and wasn’t allowed one growing up, it was one of the best days of my life so far.
I really don’t understand all these other comments saying “it defeats the purpose of yoga” … everyone is fully aware of that when they sign up to do it.

Also a good chance one of the pups pees or poops on your yoga mat

This looks more helpful to find yourself a girlfriend than anything. Ask out the one that has the most pups hound her.
If she's taken, ask the second most popular one.
And even then, this wouldn't even work for me, because most of the pups would dog-pile me instead. I'm already a dog magnet. I too would get no yoga done.

u/Lutya 15h ago
I did this once and all the puppies congregated on my boyfriend and the staff got mad and said "you have to share the puppies, sir." So they took them away and gave them to other clients and all the puppies came back to him and fell asleep lol

This reminds me of a time when I was a kid. My grandmother bred and raised boxers and one night she suggested she, my younger sibling and I do a backyard tent camp out with one of her newish litters. Which sounded like the absolute best thing ever to us of course. Boxer puppies are absolutely adorable little goofs.
We were having an absolute blast right up until about 2am, when we were all woken up by the smell of dookie. Turned out almost every single puppy had taken a big ol puppy crap in our tiny tent around and on us while we were asleep. Like, 8 or 9 puppies still weaning onto soft food, and basically a pile or two for each of them. Absolutely caked in shit. The puppies of course weren't in trouble and were totally unbothered (even though they were also covered in shit) and were just super stoked that we were all awake lol
Still remember it fondly because it was fun, but damn that was a nightmarish evening trekking back to the house covered in dogshit, me and my sister gagging and in revolted tears and a herd of puppies dancing around our feet delightedly. My grandma couldn't stop laughing.
She passed earlier this year, I miss her and I forgive her for the puppy poop lol

u/Ripplescales 11h ago
This sounds like a great memory though!
Grandma sounds like a bloody legend. RIP.

u/blind_roomba 14h ago
What happens to the puppies when they get older?
41
18
u/SAUbjj 12h ago
It depends on the puppy yoga. I've been to a few different ones. Sometimes it's a collaboration with a breeder to get the pups socialized before they're sold. One time we went and it was a litter of rescue pups that had been rescued from the southern US and brought to the north. We ended up adopting one of those rescue pups, she's nine months now
26
15
u/civilwar142pa 14h ago
Depends. Sometimes breeders will offer their puppies for this as socialization and when they're old enough they go to their homes. Can't say if this is an ethical breeder practice or a puppy mill practice, because im not familiar enough with it. I have seen this done with rescue puppies as a way to get interest in adopting them as well as socialization.
6
u/TheCa11ousBitch 9h ago
The rescue my dog is from does puppy yoga with the foster puppies, 3x a week. Foster puppies and puppies in the process of being adopted are scheduled to be brought in for the event. The rescue tells you when your puppy is expected to be present.
The yoga classes (and other similar puppy events) raise money for the rescue, introduce available puppies to potential adopters, and most importantly - brings awareness of the rescue to people through social media/word of mouth/etc so when someone starts thinking about adopting a dog - the rescue pops up in 1000s of social media feeds and people who went to an even 4 years ago think of this rescue first and foremost.
It also socializes the puppies!!
3
u/SpectralFawn 5h ago
The 2 near me get the puppies from shelters and puppy yoga interaction helps show them off for adoption.
4
u/lovable_cube 11h ago
I think this is likely an event where you can adopt a pup after. I’d assume the goal is to have them all adopted before they reach adulthood.

I wouldn't enjoy this... defeats the purpose of yoga. My bf recently got a puppy and the antics are cute for about 5 minutes before the constant jumping in your face, biting, and having to make sure she's not getting into something gets old.
92
u/InTheMorning_Nightss 14h ago
In this case, the purpose is less yoga and more surrounding yourself with puppies.

Keep a small toy on hand so when lil thang gets a bit wild, distract her with the toy. Specially if she is getting bitey.
4
u/Used_Gear8871 10h ago
I did this with my youngest dog and saved our lives. She was the hardest puppy I’ve ever had to take care of and had me in regular contact with a dog rescue because I was loosing my sanity. From not being able to control her bowels to frequent baths after her poop smear art to ripping holes in the backs of my socks each time I got up to walk across a room. The toy in mouth trick solved so much.
14
u/useriousstuff 13h ago
My spouse and I are total opposites in that regard. We both LOVE dogs, I would absolutely love this but she would love it for about 2 minutes then her nervous system would be totally fried.

10
u/duckmcsnail 14h ago
Yes! It’s obvious that this is purely for puppy play and cuddles… I don’t think a single person in that class would get any actual yoga done. I know I wouldn’t. I’d be too busy trying to get all the puppies on my mat 😭
9
8
u/Landonastar42 13h ago
That's fair. I've done goat a few times, and the point is less to do an hour of yoga and more to donate money to a rescue while taking cute pics of baby goats climbing on you and maybe do yoga.

u/Wrong-Ad-733 12h ago
Near me they have yoga with baby goats, and I believe that's a lot more chill. I went to the farm and played with the goats without the yoga component, which is also something you can do for a fee. Yoga with goats is not just particular to my area - I know they have it elsewhere.

Dog walks into a telegraph office...
Says he wants to send a message.
"Sure" says the clerk, "what's the message?"
"Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof."
Clerk says, "OK, but for the same price, there's enough room for one more 'woof'".
Dog wrinkles his brow and replies, "But that wouldn't make any sense.."

5
u/estherlane 9h ago
Lol, puppies are adorable but man, they are a lot of work....yoga is already a challenge!
4
u/No-Pollution-5841 7h ago
What why? It's playing with puppies disguised as yoga. You don't go to these for a proper yoga session.
3
u/RebaKitt3n 9h ago
Because there are no dogs in most classes?
3
u/estherlane 9h ago
Lol, no, just the puppy yoga classes, sometimes they are offered around here. I do yoga classes regularly, sans puppies.

14
u/GailaMonster 12h ago
depends what kind of puppies I think. get some spaniel or bernese mountain dog puppies (or newfoundland puppies) and you'll have a way calmer experience.
those look like whippet puppies, which is...a choice
6
u/Morpankh 11h ago
That’s was my thought too. Like golden retriever puppies would be nice to have at yoga. Not Belgian Malinois puppies or whippets or Jack Russel terriers. You gotta pick the chill breeds.

u/erogbass 14h ago
My wife did this twice. The first time all the puppies had just had a bath and one of them wasn’t very dry, so he curled up with my wife for warmth and they just both chilled together the whole time. The second time she went there were kids there as well and it was a horrible experience with the kids. They were stressing the puppies out super bad and the puppies were peeing and pooping. The staff and the children’s parents did nothing to calm down the situation or help the dogs. Personally, I would try it for an adult only session, but would never go to one with kids.
16
u/bebackground471 10h ago
cute from a (disconnected) human point of view. Quite the unethical practice all in all. I encourage everyone to read about it before engaging.
Some stuff includes:
- early separation of the puppy from its mum
- overuse (too much time i these activities leave little time for self care, including feeding and rest)
- Some businesses withhold water from puppies to prevent accidents during class
- long term behavioural damage
I hope we all use our power of choice to avoid unnecessary cruelty.
3
u/delta_wolfe 3h ago
Also check out the breeder's practices who are supplying the puppies. People renting their dogs out like this are typically business focused and cut corners on animal care.

After the yoga, get the puppies back in the van, back to the puppy farm, in the puppy cages. Cmon. Puppy is money chop chop.

I desperately want to do puppy yoga, but every time I try to book, the prices shock me at like $200. I don't understand why it's soo expensive, but I can't justify that amount of money on puppy yoga.
why isn't the market flooded with less expensive options?

What happens in 6 months when they aren’t puppies anymore?
19
u/rjwyonch 14h ago
These companies work with breeders. The puppies are weaned and socialized for a month before their owners get to take them home. In the month, the puppy businesses work with the breeders.
My office had a puppy day and I had questions.
16
u/theamydoll 13h ago
I actually foster for a rescue that specializes in neonate and orphaned puppies and kittens that come to us via the shelter or veterinarians (that get cleft palate puppies and the shitty breeders don’t know how to tube feed to keep them alive), but we get requests for puppy or kitten yoga sessions every now and again. We only take puppies over a certain age and who enjoy being around people and aren’t nervous to be in an environment like this. So some are legit, doing it for a good cause to raise money for a rescue.
But when I see something like this, where it’s all one breed, yep, total breeder. Sucks.
18
u/Thoughts-AndPrayers 14h ago
Thats why you gotta keep a puppy mill in the back. /s
13
u/Extraordi-Mary 14h ago
I know you have a /s, but this is what happens actually.
It’s very stressful for the puppies and the constant stream of puppies is not ethical either.

8
8
u/CatchTypical6127 3h ago
That looks stressful and not at all relaxing lol. But at least the pups are cute.
4
u/ForensicChaos 11h ago
I’ve done this before! I just want to say, most of these puppy yoga sessions are pop up events, not recurring. In my case, the pups were from a local rescue and were adoptable. That’s usually the point of most of these events in my area lol, you’re not going for a serious yoga class. We had one of the rescue staff present too, told us the pups history and also was there to clean up any mess and care for them.

u/SnertDeluxe 14h ago
It is unhealthy for the puppies, it's already forbidden in my country
Copie paste:
Why puppy yoga is bad for puppies
• Sleep deprivation and overstimulation: Puppies at this age (often only 6 to 12 weeks old) require up to 20 hours of sleep per day for healthy development. During intensive yoga sessions, they are kept awake, picked up, and passed around, leading to chronic sleep deprivation and extreme stress. • Lack of agency (freedom of choice): In a yoga studio, the puppies have no safe space to retreat to when they become overwhelmed. They are forced to interact with strangers. • Medical risks and the danger of infection: Because the puppies are often so young, they have not yet been fully vaccinated. Constantly bringing them into contact with changing groups of people in a warm exercise studio increases the risk of transmitting infectious diseases. • Physical neglect during the session: Undercover investigations (such as those by the television program Radar) have shown that puppies were sometimes denied water to prevent them from urinating in the studio during the session. • Improper socialization: Instead of a controlled, calm socialization process, puppies in a yoga class are exposed to an overwhelming and unpredictable environment. This can lead to anxiety disorders and behavioral problems later in life. • Commercial breeding: Many of these puppies are rented by the organization from (puppy mill) breeders for purely commercial reasons, which encourages illegal or unscrupulous dog trading.
16
u/No-Pollution-5841 7h ago
Feels like a nothing burger. The only puppy yoga near me does not hold classes often (like once a month) and uses different puppies. Puppies doing 30 minutes of "yoga" once isn't going to destroy their lives. I'm sure some places do it unethically and others ethically, like literally everything in life.
6
u/bimboozled 7h ago
For real. They’re usually events to incentivize people to come in for adoption. Leave it to Reddit to suck the joy out of anything
3
u/SpectralFawn 5h ago
Same. There are 2 puppy yoga studios around me and they hold puppy yoga once and twice per week or groups of puppies. A single group only ever comes into he studio one per month, according to their website.

I live in LA and it's never responsible breeders doing it. It's mill dogs or for-profit rescues that purchase mill puppies. They're a business, they need large litters consistently, every weekend, whereas responsible breeders have very few litters per year and wouldn't expose their puppies at that age to disease because they're too young for vaccination.

Ok I’ll say it, it’s wrong lol. If it’s a breeder using yoga with puppies as a constant offering and making them go in back to back yoga classes all day….then breeding more just to offer yoga with puppies yes. Done in a respectful way to the dogs needs no it’s absolutely great for puppies to be exposed to all these people
