I always found it amazing that if you try to touch a crab with your hands they will go away but if you have a small wooden stick, you can pet them for as long as you like.

There are some alien abduction stories like that. Not quite so pleasant, but a number of stories of someone having a medical problem, they get abducted by aliens. A fee days later they realize something got fixed up in them.
