I'm remaking King's Valley II (MSX2, Konami 1988) in HTML5, playable in your browser

Hi everyone! King's Valley II: The Seal of El Giza is one of my favorite MSX2 games, so I've been rebuilding it in JavaScript and HTML5 Canvas. It runs right in the browser, no emulator or install needed.

I studied the game logic frame by frame against the original running in an emulator, so the graphics, timing, jump arcs and the palette cycle on the face reliefs all match the MSX2. The music and sound effects aren't recordings: they're played by Konami's original sound driver running inside a Z80 emulator, with sampled drums layered on the percussion.

What's in the demo so far:

  • Stages 1 to 3, plus stage 7 with the jumping mummy and the crumbling floor. Use the password ADIBFJNN to go straight there.
  • The secret SOUND SELECT screen from the original, hidden in stage 7, which lets you play every song and sound effect.
  • A few optional touches: debris when you dig (press V to switch back to the original frames), mummies that turn to dust, and a new moon and stars.

Arrow keys move, Space jumps or uses an item, Enter starts, and F switches to fullscreen.

It's an unofficial, free fan remake, and all rights to the original game belong to Konami. Stages 4 to 6 are still in progress, so feedback is very welcome, especially from anyone who knows the original well!

On this day 43 years ago on October 21st, 1983, ASCII Corperation's MSX computing standard was first made availible to the public in Japan with the Mitsubishi ML-8000 being the first machine released with the standard. Other compaines like Sony, Sanyo, Hitachi, and many more that worked with ASCII followed suite creating an entire ecosystem of gaming computers that would span a over 12 years! All the while introducing classic game franchises like Bomberman, Metal Gear and Puyo Puyo. Whats your favorite MSX Model and game?
