Time of year to remind folks of linear algebra preparation

Hi,

Before each semester, we like to send out a message to students and faculty reminding them that there are resources for acquiring the necessary background in linear algebra.

Some of you may be thinking of taking Advanced Linear Algebra for Computing, ALA, (a course we developed and now lead by another faculty member) while others may need to refresh their linear algebra knowledge or plug holes. In particular, the SVD (related to PCA) is important for courses in ML and other topics in computer science.

Resources are available (for free) at http://ulaff.net. In particular, the pretest (see fourth column) may help you self-assess your knowledge and give you pointers to other resources should you need to fill in gaps. You can also preview ALA.

Perhaps those who have used these materials can advise peers on how they fit into the picture. We also would appreciate it if someone would also post this announcement on your Slack channels, for those who might not see it here.

Although we don't teach this course ourselves any longer, we do actively keep track of it and are here to assist. We still run MOOCs (audit for free) on edX including LAFF, the undergraduate linear algebra course.

Best wishes,

Robert and Maggie

Admitted for Spring 2027, need discord link

All the ones I can find are invalid, so if anyone has a new link, would be very much appreciated. Also, are there any important things that need to be done before enrolling in classes in January? I saw that we need to send transcripts, but I originally sent them through Parchment and according to MyStatus, it says that I sent official transcripts so I think that should be that.

Anyone know what the next steps are after accepting the admission offer?

Beyond just sending the official transcripts

Incoming Spring 2027: math refresh resources + first course suggestions?

Hi everyone,

I’m starting MSCSO in Spring 2027 and want to use the next couple of months to prepare.

Background:

  • BS in Systems Engineering (graduated 2024)
  • Took Calculus, Linear Algebra and Probability/Statistics in undergrad, but it’s been a few years
  • Working full time as an AI Engineer, so I plan to take 1 course per semester

Looking for:

  1. Math refresh: What resources helped you get back up to speed on linear algebra, calculus and probability before the program? Books, courses, YouTube, anything that maps well to what the courses actually expect.
  2. First semester course: Which course would you recommend as a first one for someone working full time? I’m leaning toward Advanced Linear Algebra for Computing, but open to other suggestions. Any courses to avoid as a starter?

Thanks in advance!

*Dumb Question* How difficult is this program

I have my CS degree from western governors university (done in 6 months), a ms in analytics (completed last week that took 1 yr) and have been eyeing a MS in CS. Wondering as someone who just started getting into CS, last year basically, starting as a data analyst, how difficult is this program overall especially working full time. anyone here failed a class or dropped out?

Research Opportunities?

I was recently admitted to the online MSCS for Spring 2027 and work full time and didn't do undergraduate research, so I'm hoping to find out whether online students can get research experience. I don't mean a formal thesis track, just working with a professor or lab in some capacity.

Have any of you done research as an online student and how did you get started?

I couldn't find much about this online, so any experiences would be really helpful. Thanks

Thoughts on taking RL + NLP first semester?

Hey everyone. I just got accepted (yay) and am trying to create a roadmap for the courses I will take.

For my first semester, I'm thinking of Reinforcement Learning and Natural Language Processing. Based on the reviews and course relationship diagram from https://mscshub.com, it seems like that would be doable, but I figured I'd ask as a sanity check.

Is there any reason why these two wouldn't go well while working full-time? For reference I am a junior-level SWE with a CS undergrad, and have limited hands-on AI/ML experience, but am already comfortable in Python.

Thanks!

First semester course recommendations

I was just admitted into MSCSO a few days ago for Spring '27, and I was wondering if anyone had any course recommendations for my first semester. I am thinking about taking two classes while also working full-time. I have a fairly strong math/theory background from my undergrad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Should I include in progress masters on my resume?

I’m confused if I’m getting less response now that I’ve included “part time masters” on my resume or if the market has been worse this month. I was getting good responses from may - Jul without mentioning the masters on my resume. Does anyone know if recruiters don’t like you doing a part time masters while looking for a full time?

MSCSO International Insurance - Anyone auto-enrolled? How to check?

Question for international MSCSO students who are fully online and not on a US visa.

UT info says F-1/J-1/J-2 are auto-enrolled in UT health insurance at registration and charged mid-sem. Waiver deadline is Sept 4, 5pm CT.

My course is 100% online, I don't have a US visa, and I didn't get any email from Texas Global. There was also no registration step for us.

Does this auto-enrollment even apply to us? Has anyone in the same situation been charged or had to file a waiver?

How do you check enrollment status — What I Owe / MyUT?

Thanks.

Questions regarding the UT Austin eligiblity

  1. I am currently pursuing a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from India, which is a four-year degree program. However, I entered the program through lateral entry as a diploma holder, allowing me to join directly in the second year and complete the degree in three years. As a result, I will have transcripts/marksheets for semesters 2 through 8. Would I be considered eligible under UT Austin four-year bachelor's degree requirement in this situation?
  2. I plan to apply for the Fall 2027 intake and expect to complete my B.Tech. in May 2027. At the time of application or enrollment, I may not have received my final degree certificate from my university. Would UT Austin accept a provisional degree certificate or equivalent official documentation until the final degree certificate is issued?

Registration Error for Fall 2026 Courses

I’ve been unable to register for Fall 2026 MSCS Online courses since yesterday due to a "registration not open" error.

Is registration open only during specific hours, or is there another requirement I’m missing?

Classes that release all material

Hi everyone, this semester, I have some down time before starting a new job mid-semester. Does anyone have any suggestions for classes that release all material at the start of the semester that I could work on while I am not working? Trying to see if I can fit in a second class this semester. I have already taken DL, ADL, and PSRUU. This is for CS program.

Can I reuse my application answers for a future MSCS application in case I don’t get in or want to stop my application?

I’d like to apply but we are passed the priority deadline but not the final deadline. So I’m filling out an application but I don’t know if I will get in. In case I don’t and want to apply during the next round of applications, do I need to fill out the entire application over again? Of course, I can reuse the same SOP, recommendation letters, etc.

By the way, does anyone know the fraction of people that get offers who apply after the priority deadline?

Thanks!

Transferring between UT Austin and Georgia Tech

I was admitted into UT Austin, and did not apply to Georgia Tech OMSCS because of some personal work that work in the way; I would like to start the masters in UT Austin, but as a general question, are classes/credits between the transferable?

Hi,

Current applicant for the IMME (Masters in International Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship) at OVGU. My application status is still “In Progress”
Anyone else in the same boat? When is the status expected to update?
