Discussion Who are all these Love Live girls? An introduction to the post-Liella new projects (Oct. 2026 update)
Note: This is an update to my original article posted here this March - since then lots of things has have happened that required quite a bit of updating, thus the repost.
———————————————————————————————————————————
In the past year or two, I have noticed that a lot of visitors to this sub-reddit (and in other places!) seem to be confused on the huge bunch of new girls appearing in Love Live after the times when they were committing their concentration on the likes of μ’s and Aqours (or for those who play games, Niji and Liella). Look no further than the Love Live 15th anniversary illustrations related posts, or this earlier post about who’s still active. And I am not even mentioning heated discussions everywhere of how Love Live “used to be good”.
A lot of these confusions and misconceptions stem from the unfortunate reality that Love Live’s 2 newest projects and 1 spin-off started after 2021 still do not have TV anime - the backbone of story content offering for the “Original 4” projects - available so far (at least in a format that we are accustomed to), nor do they have any games (surviving) right now. I am definitely not surprised people are asking who the girls from them are, because none of these projects received any token amount of advertising outside of Japan.
Early this year I was originally planning to type all this as a reply comment somewhere in this sub-reddit, but it turns into a long copy-pasta, so I turned that into a separate reference post for everyone for an introduction to everything post-Superstar/Liella in Love Live.
Since it is easy to check out the anime contents of the “Original 4” for old fans who left early to make an impression of newer things, I am not going to write about them here except to leave the anime chronology here for you all to follow. Feel free to ask about general impressions etc. of a certain project/group if you like.
μ’s/SIP: Season 1 -> Season 2 -> Movie
Aqours/Sunshine: Season 1 -> Season 2 -> Movie (Spin-off: Yohane Of The Parhelion)
Nijigasaki School Idol Club: Season 1 -> Season 2 -> NEXT SKY OVA -> Finale Movie 1 -> Finale Movie 2 -> Finale Movie 3 (to be released February 2027)
Liella/Superstar: Season 1 -> Season 2 -> Season 3

The Highly Underrated: Hasunosora School Idol Club, Hasu

The biggest missing gem of Love Live's history may well have the most unfortunate way of floating into most casual fan's conscience when its "game" went down earlier this year (but read on below - it's way more than just a "game"!). What most of the Love Live fans in the West missed, however, is that they might have just missed the most wonderful story of the whole project, and that it's still very much alive!
Officially announced in February 2023 and started activity that April, this 5th Project of Love Live has IMHO the best story and character interactions ever seen in the project by some distance. Except that its “multimedia project format” caused quite a few misconceptions among us casual fans (me included, for 2 whole years of its existence that I now very much regretted), and then its virtually non-existent advertising outside of Japan absolutely failed to help.
Unlike all previous Love live projects where the anime provides the backbone of the story and games containing additional content, Hasunosora based their own story on:
- Activity Records, a main story that’s best described as a mixture of animated visual novel-anime with character models and scenes more resembling ones used by VTubers (this has the advantage of the story able to go extremely long - in these 3 years the total length is now close to 200 standard anime episodes!)
- With x Meets, characters’ VTuber-like streaming sessions once every several days to a week
- Fes x Live, characters’ (also VTuber-like) live concerts once every 2-4 months
All of these were consolidated into one single mobile app, Link Like Love Live (LLLL), which was once the sole survivor of Love Live mobile game apps (with a card game and a rudimentary “SIF3” rhythm game in there). However these content are all also easily found on YouTube officially making them available for everyone.
This means many fans like me mistook Hasu as a VTuber project at first glance and immediately ignored it (not helped by the fact that competing IPs like BanG Dream and Idolmaster introduced real VTubers around the same time) - but it ISN’T. Not only are the streaming sessions and lives tied to the story content, all of these happen in roughly real time. (We also know who are the seiyuus are, they have their own traditional programs and events and live concerts too.)
And yes, this means new girls come to join at the start of a new school year - and (most importantly) they also graduate and leave the story and project, including the seiyuu casts…with one caveat that they now still come back to the story and real life event sometimes since this year. For the past 3 years the official number of girls in the project has varied from 6 to 9 to 8 respectively.
These quirky aspects of Hasu makes this a really tough part of Love Live to sell to fans, especially when official channels simply not showing up for advertising Hasu outside of Japan (there were a few confusing attempts in the past including offering official translations of stories for, uh, equivalent of the first several months and then chicken out, or getting the Hasu cast in VTuber lives in LA and Shanghai in 2024).
———————————————————————————————————————————
And then things ended up as a roller coaster since I first typed this guide out.
In late March this year, just as the poster girl of the project Kaho and her dear friends graduated, and more than a month before the cumulation of the stories of these 3 years were promised to be told - and ultimately delivered - in a showcase of emotions and gratitude in the form of a full blown anime movie, we got an announcement of another 3 new girls joining in the upcoming 106th Term, ending speculations of what would happen with the project. Even more joy came when it was announced at the same time that the story of this 4th year of the project would be told in the form of an upcoming TV anime scheduled for January 2027.
It was so worth the wait for the few Hasu fans out there.
Or so we thought. On the LLLL side there were signs that content production had to be reduced (Fes x Live being not mentioned at all), but the plan as announced was to dual-track content releases with the rest of 2026 being spent in "Dream Interlude", where additional back stories of the Hasu-verse over the past years would have been told in additional Activity Record chapters and with (no more live streaming, hence renamed "With x STATION") short activities videos.
Therefore, absolutely no-one - perhaps not even the Love Live project management themselves - were prepared for what happened just 6 days later (!!!), when LLLL's developer suddenly declared bankruptcy, and with it pulled down LLLL for good (its final day being June 30th, although its final update allows us to keep it up in off-line format).
The whole project was definitely thrown into chaos, with just a fraction of the originally-promised first list of content released. Gloom descended through us fans despite the Grand Finale anime movie of the original cast being absolutely emotional and 200% worth the wait (especially when the graduated senpais reappearing again there with significant story involvement). Things finally slowly roll again in the last 2 months as new Activity Records move to YouTube and our girls streaming there as well without animations (there's even a new monthly subscription plan for novel story chapters & videos), but it's still going to be hanging by a thread throughout the rest of this year.
———————————————————————————————————————————
All the fuss above don't tell the story that there’s one thing in Hasunosora that makes getting through these obstacles so well worth it.
It’s the story and characters that makes Hasu perhaps the best Love Live story ever written.
Thanks to its format, by merely getting several times of screening time as “standard” anime, every single member of the cast got extensive stories to tell and to flesh out their characters. And it’s not just like a standard idol club activity record, each of them has built up their own record of growth and maturity in the 3 years of high school, in many cases with emotional stories of their own to tell.
That’s enough for me to shill Hasu hard to every Love Live fan out there, but there’s even more. The relationships between members, especially senpai-kouhai ones, are literally smelling heavily of yuri (especially if you look at song lyrics). Not surprising when you have the story writer of last year’s explosive yuri title WataNare leading the story writing here! I must also stress here that sub-units in Hasu has far, far more importance in the story than any other Love Live project, because they essentially function as couples/groups you can find in anime/manga stories about girls’ schools (an old excellent example being Maria Watches Over Us). There are so many sweet and heart warming moments across the 3 years (not just in the activity records, but in live streams and live concerts and even found in the game’s cards as well) that anyone who strays into Hasu really got sucked in as hard core fans.
Their music and songs are consistently excellent as well - heck I would say (ex-?) main girl Kaho’s sub-unit Cerise Bouquet may have the best song collections of all Love Live sub-units. Yes, and that’s with my Hasu Best Girl being from another group! Sayaka's my all-time favorite Love Live girl!
I personally got into Love Live 4 years ago, right as Hasu was teased for the very first time as a "Virtual School Idol" project, yet my prejudice on its format lead to me never checking on what it is until May last year, when repeated recommendations from a Discord server finally got me in - and I was immediately hooked. So much that I WILL probably swing by Hasu’s real life setting, the historical city of Kanazawa on the Sea Of Japan coast, and walk through all the scenes there soon! Yes, I am not kidding. I promise you that going into Hasunosora may well be the best thing you can do to boost your interests staying here.

Thanks to the hard work of many people (including members of this sub-reddit), getting into Hasu in English is easy! Just follow these links and you will find literally a new universe for you before the TV anime starts:
- This extensive YouTube playlist has everything you need to know about the girls (an extremely long journey to get through, be sure to leave yourself several weeks to get through everything!)
- Activity Records are fully translated to English and put up on YouTube between 2 groups of really dedicated translators, Luna (up to end of 103th term) (missing chapters here) and Riimuda (late 103th term - right now) (missing chapters here)
- Finally someone's making excerpt translations of With x Meets & Fes x Lives on YouTube too!
- If you want to dig even deeper there are full guides for you to really dig into the story timeline.

A Different Timeline of School Idols: BlueBird/IKIZULIVE

Well, if you came over this article, chances are that you may heard of the news of "Chun-sensei" last month. What went over the head of most of the old time μ's fans though is that there's a full story that has ran for well over a full year before the hydrogen bombshell landed!
Love Live’s newest project was teased in February 2025 and officially started May last year. Over a year later and you can say that they are still in the “beta-testing phase” with no anime or game still in sight for some reason. However that doesn't mean there's nothing behind our 10 girls here!
Currently story-like content for BlueBird can be found in these places:
- Tweets between each girl’s individual Twitter accounts interacting - that lasted a full year before suddenly ending at this end of February, right after their first real life live (though a limited time revival happened last month when their 2nd live occurred). You can find them all organized and translated to English here.
- A couple of short YouTube videos (English subs available here) of slice-of-life scenes and fans’ interactions activities that are essentially girls going on Zoom (with reasons - read on for details!).
- Other materials such as magazine columns for each girl (still on-going) and even their 1st real live in full (!). Thanks to our tirelessly working fans, there's now a full website dedicated to everything for this project so you don't need to become lost now! (also see here for more links)
This is akin to the early days of the Love Live projects where the major things happening in their 1st year or so are magazine columns articles and a handful of readers’ interactions activities, updated somewhat to the world of 2020s. We still have yet to see signs of where the project will expand towards into other types of multimedia (except for a manga that just started a few weeks ago). However…
…what we get so far is already quite interesting. This project is set in an alternative timeline where the idea of school idols cease to exist after μ's, and we have a bunch of 10 girls here on remote learning across Japan in branches of a high school for various reasons trying to make their own school idol club. On the surface, their tweets and videos are pretty standard of what you would expect high school girls to be doing (with some exceptions) - but there are hints here and there that all 10 of them are not OK in their lives, down from the first poster we get of the project to what we see in their first real life concert. This can turn out to be a real painful story (of the sorts we have seen in MyGO-Ave Mujica, or Girls Band Cry, or Nightcord At 25) with lights of hope shining through the clouds.
What’s more, strong hints have appeared in their tweets that shows BlueBird as being at some years after the Muse timeline, with Muse members appearing in BlueBird girls’ interactions, now out in society and school idols no longer being a trend at the very least. That's exactly why we have Chun-sensei tucked at the end of BlueBird's recently published paper guide - she has in fact appeared many times in the girls' tweets for over a year already!
But where is the story heading towards? The appearance of a very well animated brand new song MV for them early this year makes me feel that a BlueBird anime within the next year or two is a when, not an if question. Heck if there are even more content planned (mobile games?) I would not be surprised. Yet without a concrete smoking gun still in sight and the main “story” content providing channel right now being sporadic short videos and a manga that just started, it is difficult to see what are BlueBird's next steps for now. Yet they, and the fans that hopped onto it the very first day, are definitely in interesting times!

The Spin-Off: School Idol Musical, SIM

As its name suggests, this is a real life musical spin-off that started in Japan in December 2022, with a story that’s a prequel to everything else in the Love Live timeline (set in like the 1980s/90s), and has been continuing with new content and rotating casts (involving lots of real life idols) every year since. The latest version is currently on stage in Japan!
Alas the project’s format itself means it’s essentially inaccessible to us (I don’t think there were even official recorded performances that we can buy) - if not for that a spin-off of this spin-off was made in the form of a 6 episode TV drama in late 2024! You can find it with English subs…somewhere on the web (PM me if you want pointers).
It's a pretty interesting story too involving two different girls schools, one with a leader girl named Anzu that was essentially pulled into the professional industry early by her fame-seeking mother who sits on the school board, and another with a girl named Rurika that was just star-struck with Anzu to the point of her trying to make a school idol club. Then they met and all things go loose, including when Rurika's mom (also managing a school) was revealed to be a long time archenemy of Anzu's! It's a bit weird watching a musical turned into a TV drama but it's so fun to watch so do try it out!
I am not surprised almost everyone cannot picked these girls out, as it’s highly unlikely any people would be familiar with these 10 girls in “character format” given this form essentially only appear on SIM merchandise (which only appears like once in a Blue Moon, such as the 15th anniversary related ones) LOL. Also note that as per usual stage play/musicals practice, real life casting changes very frequently too.
———————————————————————————————————————————
Hopefully this should answer all the questions of “who are these new girls???” “Hasu who???” etc. whenever you meet a Love Live girl that you cannot recognize!

Other What do my top 4 girls say about me?
Kozue > Nozomi > Shizuku > You
Nozomi was my #1 for the longest time but Kozue REALLY grew on me when Hasu first debuted. For the longest time I felt guilty putting her as my new #1 since she was so recent but now I can confidently say that she is my most favorite girl in the series! Nozomi is still VERY close behind her though

Discussion I finished the Love Live! Sunshine!! series for the first time and here are some thoughts [SPOILER] Spoiler
I posted before my experience with Love Live! School Idol Project as a new fan of the franchise and now I am here to talk a bit about the sequel series: Love Live! Sunshine!!
After how much fun I had with SIP I was hyped to see Sunshine, especially because not that long ago Aqours ended and I was able to see how much people loved the group, also I already knew about how the group was able to save a real city in real life and how the landscape of Numazu changed because of that.
Basically, there is so much around Aqours and their legacy that I was dying to see where it all started.
And with all that said, was the anime able to live up the hype?
Maybe. But let's take one step at a time.
(also, english is not my native language, so sorry if anything sounds weird, also also, sorry for the wall of text up ahead)
Firstly thing I wanna talk about is the decision to make this sequel as "the same anime, but not really". Everything in the story, mostly 1st season to be fair, but still, mirrors μ's, but doesn’t have the same result. They need to save the school? On SIP that was sad news, but here Chika is happy because she is doing the same thing μ's did. The student cousin president is against the idol group? On SIP she didn’t want this responsability to fall under the students, but here it’s because she has an idol background herself. We have a concert with only the second years by episode 3? On SIP the show was a failure, but here they were able to full the whole gym. There is drama of one the members going to study abroad? On SIP they decided to stay together, but here she goes and it creates a bigger plot later on. The boobie grabbing girl is actually the sweetest girl ever and she is secretly behind of everything? This time the boobie grabbing girl, that still is the sweetest girl ever and also is behind everything, is doing everything ON YOUR FACE THE WHOLE TIME. I can continue, but I am pretty sure people have talked about this subject to death already, lol. The important part is how those small parallels elevates a lot of the show because they play with your expectations a lot, I was on the edge of my seat many times, because I didn’t know they were gonna save the school and lose the Love Live or win the Love Live and lose the school.
Also, being a sequel with different characters is a really fun way to expand your franchise, because it's the same universe and all the main characters knows μ's, they are fans as much as us watching it, all the impact they left on us is also left on the main cast so it’s really easy to project yourself on the story and that’s pretty fun. They could just leave it as small bits of fan service, but they were able to put this technicality in the narrative as well, I think the best example is the Hanamaru and Ruby introduction episode (that mirrors Hanayo and Rin introduction episode!!): Hanamaru is practicing with everyone else just because she wants to give a small push on Ruby and, the momment she is able to do that, Hanamaru goes back to her library ready to go back to her normal life, after all, she did what she wanted to do, right? She is not an idol, she only wants to help Ruby, but then she sees the μ's magazine. The page with Rin on the wedding dress and the show doesn’t need words, at that momment the whole audience know what that means for a girl like Hanamaru, the same way she feels she doesn‘t fit to be an idol Rin also felt, but Rin did it anyway and that was the push Hanamaru needed.
SUCH A STRONG SCENE! Also, a perfect introduction episode for her and Ruby. So sad Hanamaru has almost zero screentime after this, but hey, I am getting ahead of myself.
I'm not sure if this is a hot take or not, but I felt the season1 was better than season2 this time. I am not saying the 2nd season is bad, but how the 1st season was structured was so well done. The whole plot with Mari, Kanaan and Dia has LOTS of information that is given to the audience organically, you basically can build the whole puzzle in your head if you pay attention and that's so cool. Especially because the big reveal, the one that Kanaan gave up of the competition because she was worried about Mari, it wasn't something we were able to know even though we knew almost the full story, so it really gets you without betraying the audience. They clearly had a vision there, damn; the first season feels more about the 3rd years than anyone else sometimes, even though there are good moments for everyone.
The 2nd season, on the other hand, was a bit messier. I feel they weren't able to manage all the characters as well as the first season, but we still have some great moments. There is a 2 episode sequence focused on saving the school and failing that was INCREDIBLE. The timer episode, where they stay on the school all night looking the number of applications grow and hoping to get the 100, just for it to stop at 98 when the time limit hits is such a strong of a moment, as I said before, I didn't know if they would save the school or win the Love Live, so I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!! Also, the timer thing also helps a lot to build tension, because you can literally see the time ending.
The next episode where the girls can’t practice because they feel they have already lost is so heartbreaking to see, I was, actually, pretty sad watching it, really felt like the group was falling apart, but then comes the scene with the whole school cheering them up and asking for Aqours to eternalize the school by winning the Love Live. That was, simply put, a perfect scene. It represents the show, the theme of a group of people being stronger of the some of its parts, of getting together to help each other, especially in small communities, is a core theme of the show, so when that scene happens, you can feel like their journey is going places, even though they just lost a big chapter of the whole thing.
Some other stuff that I like are:
- The gags with Hanamaru basically controlling the first years, she keeps Yoshi- Yohane in check and is always pushing Ruby
- The Riko and Yoshi- Yohane dynamic, the fact that the serious Riko was pulled to the world of chuunibyou is so funny
- Saint Snow and their development. A-Rise dreams to receive that much attention from the writers
- How even the boobie grabbing joke has a twist with You doing and ippon on Mari
- When they were counting their “1 to 9” routine before the stage and then the rest of the school goes and screams “10”
- How Dia starts with such a bad attitude, but with time she ends up being the biggest dorky ever
- How mature Mari is, she easily notices how You was feeling and is very fast to help it out, but at the same time she is the goofiest of them all
- Kanaan x Mari is even more explicit than Nozomi x Eli, oh my god
- How on the last episode they played the first opening, that’s a nice touch
- You love for uniforms is such a nonsense, but gets me every time, especially with her cousin during the movie, lol
- Still talking about You’s cousin, the scene where they try to make us believe she is a guy was pretty funny, not gonna lie
- Saint Snow and Aqours singing together on that one episode and their final match during the movie is great stuff
- Chika – You – Riko relationship is so cute, the ships this season are really hard to decide, lol
- Ruby’s growth during the series wasn’t something I was expecting, but it was very welcome!!
And now I want to talk a bit about my two favorite characters: Hanamaru and Mari. It's funny because they are completely opposite of each other when talking about writing, lol, but I like them for different reasons.
Let's start with Hanamaru. She is so funny and full of personality. It feels like the writers put a lot of quirky stuff into one single character and, miraculously, it worked?? She is a bookworm, she has an accent (zura!!), she isn’t athletic, she eats a lot, she likes to pick on others when she can, but she is very friendly as well and knows how hard change or try something new can be. Damn, can’t wait to see what kind of development the writers are gonna give her! Yeah, I think you guys can see my biggest problem with the character. For someone that has that many personality traits and good gags and in the background they kinda of didn’t do anything with her and that sucks, but oh well, she is really entertaining to see at least! There is this joke that always gets me: On the episode where Yoshi- Yohane gets sad because she can’t stay with the dog and stops acting like a chuunibyou, there is this scene where Hanamaru starts acting like her, because the chuunibyou acting is being missed. It’s a mix of mocking Yoshiko and actually worrying about her at the same time and it's so great, zura!!
Then we have Mari. MY QUEEN And also, probably, the writers queen, because the show a lot of times feels like is about her more than anything else, let’s see the timeline: She is on the first Aqours group, she gets hurt and blames herself for their loss, she runs away just to come back as director knowing the situation of the school before anyone else, she is the reason the new Aqours exists, she is encouraging them at the same time she is also testing their resolve, she is holding the weight if the school on her shoulders while trying to create and train the group to enter the Love Live, win and save the school and she is doing all that with a giant smile on her face and being the goofiest person ever. I don’t think is possible to not love her. Her rich girl personality is a persona she puts on to be able to be as strong as she needs to be and all she does is not only for others, but also for her dreams to be together with her friends forever, for god's sake, even the movie feels like a goodbye to her with all the “it will end, but it will also live forever with us” theme. There is this scene on the last episode from the 2nd season, after she has given all the diplomas to everyone, Kanan and Dia meet her on her office to give her her own diploma, the proof she was there with them on the last moments of the school, and then there is the brief moment that Mari stops, it is very quick, but is very noticeable the intention, she doesn’t want to take it, because she knows the moment she accepts the diploma, everything will be over and she doesn’t want for it to end. It’s such a small scene, but I think represents the character perfectly. And I can talk a lot about her grow since a kid, how shy and passive she was and how she turned out, also that episode that she drives everyone in search of a star and so on, she has so much stuff going on for her that I would be here all day, lol.
Lastly, I wanna finish talking a bit about the movie. The SIP movie felt a bit like an extra story more than anything else, but the Sunshine movie feels like a continuation that was fully necessary (not sure if this is a hot take or not, lol).
With μ's we had a full arc of deciding if the group would continue after the 3rd years graduation or not, it was a big deal, so it was kinda weird that we didn’t have a parallel of it during the last season of Sunshine. It just makes sense to have it in the movie. The whole thing of not being able to do a live on the same level they were doing before just to go back to their roots, find theirselves again and then show everyone on the new school their value is a pretty good structure for the movie.
There is some stuff a bit weird mixed up, like the whole Mari subplot out of nowhere, lol, (I am saying the writers clearly have their favorite), and, even though I love the scene, the whole “Love Live finals against Saint Snow” could be a bit better tied up with the mains story.
I think the strongest part of the movie is how it managed to understand Sunshine story and themes as a whole: I mentioned before, but the theme of a group of people being stronger of the some of its parts, of getting together to help each other, especially in small communities, is one of the main cores of the show. Chika, as a character, is the embodiment of that. She just makes everyone around her part of it, while Honoka made everyone want to follow her, she unites people. This union is what made it possible to put Aqours name in history, all girls in the school helped out, the city community helped out and, even though they failed to save the school, they were able to eternalize all that. This fact can’t be taken back and will always be with them. That’s why they don’t need to enter their old school during that scene of the movie, that’s why the third years sing in spirit with them during the last stage and that’s the reason Aqours was able to continue while μ's stopped.
My favorite detail of the movie is how on the last scene we are on the beach in front of Chika’s house hearing two girls talking about wanting to join Aqours. 2 girls, the same amount needed to save the school. At the end, they were able to reach 100 girls, actually, a lot more than 100, Mari didn’t fail, Aqours journey turned out to be bigger than the name Aqours itself.
So that's it, after such a well-planned first season and a bit messier second season, we finish the story with a very fun and meaningful conclusion that understands its characters and story pretty well. I, personally, don't think Love Live! Sunshine!! was on the same level as School Idol Project as a whole, but it was a great anime regardless. Love Live still pretty fun = D
I'm very curious about the documentary now. Also, it will take a bit for me to start Nijigasaki, I don't want to have any school idol burnout after all, lol. But I should make a post about it in the future as well. Sorry for the wall of text and if I got anything wrong, please, tell me in the comments.

Discussion Any Outliers Among Your Favorites?
Which of your favorites sticks out like a sore thumb? Do you usually have some sort of pattern or specific reason you like characters, and if so are there any that break it?
Mine is Kasumi. Given the pattern on the other side, my favorite Niji girl really should be Ai. But she's only my #2 cause Kasumi is just so silly and adorable. Can't help myself lol

Fan Art [OC] Drawing again after year long break
Getting back into the swing of things by practicing drawing Mia! After my college art courses I lost pretty much all my passion to create, it sucked a lot especially looking back at my old artwork and thinking I can’t make anything like that again. I want to continue drawing my fav girls as a way to practice :D
