Can anyone use a single ACE train pass this week?

I bought a 2 trip ticket on Monday because I was supposed to have a second meeting in SJ, but now it’s rescheduled for next week. Expires Monday, which I’m not sure includes being able to use on Monday

If you can use it, post here and I’ll DM you!

Job opportunity, quality of life, commute, and more.. advice needed

Hi everyone! I have a job opportunity at LLNL and am struggling to weigh the pros and cons, so I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

For some context, the salary is $130k, I’m 27, single, and don’t have an extravagant lifestyle, but I enjoy going out to eat occasionally, attending concerts, visiting coffee shops and breweries, traveling, etc. I’m not a big partier but enjoy an occasional night out.

My first question is whether $130k is enough to live comfortably in the Bay Area while still being able to enjoy those things and save some money. I would want to live alone, preferably in a 1bed 1bath.

I’m also trying to figure out where I’d want to live. I don’t think I’d want to live in Livermore itself, as I’d prefer somewhere with a bit more going on socially. I’m looking for a happy medium, somewhere that isn’t too busy or overwhelming but still has fun things to do and opportunities to meet people and make friends. I initially considered San Jose, but after reading several threads about the commute to LLNL, I’m starting to second-guess that idea.

My biggest dilemma is that I got another offer for a good-paying job in my hometown, but it doesn’t align with the career path I ultimately want to pursue. The position at LLNL could be a step in the right direction career-wise, but I’d be giving up the current offer and moving to a much higher-cost-of-living area to take it… I’m trying to determine whether the career opportunity and experience of living somewhere new would be worth the financial trade-offs. I’d really appreciate any advice!

What's the lore behind why there is no Livermore BART station?

I moved here from East San Jose late last year, so I'm used to BART not being the most accessible.

I did enjoy riding BART up to the city from the Milpitas and then Berryessa stations when they opened up.

From what I've read, back in the 1950s during the initial planning phase, Santa Clara County officials decided it was better to build freeways and expressways rather than join BART.

This sort of makes sense as at that point Silicon Valley was in a primordial state and it was projected that most development would be suburban.

Why did BART never reach Livermore?

By the mid-late 50s during the BART planning stages, LNLL already existed. Having a rapid train line that could reach major regional hubs would have made sense.

LLNL commute

I’m a newer lab employee. I’m curious to learn about other lab employees who commute from the Central Valley to Livermore. Is it worth it and how do you do it?

Searchable interactive map of Wheels and other public transport around Livermore

https://sfbapt.com/map

Public transit in Livermore: Wheels, ACE, and Gold Runner run directly through Livermore.

County Connection (92X from Walnut Creek to Pleasanton, 97X from San Ramon to Dublin, 335 from San Ramon to Dublin BART, 636 from San Ramon to Dublin) and AC Transit (703 from Dublin/Pleasanton to Salesforce Transit Center) run a few lines nearby too.

Quick tips:

  • tap a stop or route to see details and highlight the stop/route
  • tap a highlighted stop or route to un-highlight it
  • collapse/expand info box by tapping |hide| (top left)
  • quickly toggle all the agencies on/off using button (top right)
  • search (case insensitive) and filter agencies that show up in checkbox list (top right)
  • search (cAsE sEnsITivE) and filter actual routes and stops that show up on map (bottom right)
  • link back to homepage in case you can't figure something out or want more tips (bottom right)

To play with the map search and filter, try this:

  • zoom out all the way
  • select the Show Stops option (top right)
  • type -120 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -121 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -122 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)
  • type -123 in the partial match search box (bottom box in bottom right)

Another interesting thing is you can link to specific spots by copying the url directly:

I arranged the agency checkbox list (top right) by area, so the geographic area of an agency determines the agency layer checkbox position. The list starts with agencies in the North Bay in Solano County then goes counterclockwise: North Bay -> San Francisco -> Peninsula -> South Bay -> Santa Cruz -> Monterey-Salinas -> Gilroy/Hollister -> East Bay.

There are smaller agencies in the area that are completely free (no fare) and not as well known like Presidio Go, Golden Gate Park Shuttle, Mission Bay Shuttle, South City Shuttle, commute.org shuttles, MVgo, Mountain View Community Shuttle, San Leandro LINKS, Emery Express, and Emery Go Round. If you're traveling to those areas, these agencies could help fill in some transit gaps.

Share this with your friends and people who don't use transit so they know just how many options we actually have, and let me know if anything doesn't work (corp network/vpn/firewalls might not work) or you have any questions/requests!

How to advertise for trick or treating?

So I saw on google that you can advertise your residence is participating in trick or treating via next-door, is there another way to advertise this that is commonly used? We live in an apartment and rarely see any trick or treaters.

This year we are hosting a bad movie and pumpkin carving party during the day, and we are going to have fun with decorating.

Any suggestions on increasing trick or treater traffic?

Westwinds apartments over by the lab btw.

LLNL Questions

I'm a level 4 (Principal Engineer) at a major defense contractor with a little over 10 years of experience. My highest degree is a PhD. Would it make sense to apply for an SES.4 (MTS 4) role at Livermore?

Also, I currently have a Secret clearance with a TS upgrade in progress. Would I be eligible to apply for roles that require TS? Will LLNL wait for the investigation to complete after hiring, or is it basically expected on day one?

Pumpkins After Dark - Worth going to?

Has anyone gone to the Pumpkins After Dark at the Alameda County Fairgrounds yet?

I found a few non-promotional photos and videos on Instagram and it doesn't look like there's much to it.

I'm also a bit confused why there are time slots for tickets and "VIP" tickets.

For those of you that have gone, is it something you'd find enjoyable for a couple without kids?

Anyone want a free Chick?

Okay, so this is a bit out there.

We had a chicken hatch from an egg today (long story) but we’re not setup to care for a lone chick.

Anyone with a farm or a coop interested in a free chick?

Livermore for two weeks on business. Suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm in Livermore for the next two weeks for work training and have my evenings free. I'd love some local recommendations:

Food: Favorite restaurants, taquerias, or hidden gems? Open to anything.

Sights: Anything worth seeing in the area, like scenic drives, sunset spots, or wineries worth an evening visit?

Nightlife: Where do people go for a fun, social night out? Bonus points for anywhere with a good crowd in their 30s–40s.

Dancing: I love going out dancing, especially to house music. Any spots in Livermore or a reasonable drive away (Pleasanton, Oakland, SF) with good DJs?

Thanks in advance!
