General Question Bear fur scraps?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello! I am trying to make a replica of Ötzi's bear fur hat but I don't have the money to buy a whole bear hide. However, the hat is small enough that i would be able to make it from leftover scraps. I can't find any for sale online so I am asking here. What's nice is that the original was also made from various scraps as well, so it would be all the more accurate.
Does anyone know where I can buy some or would anyone have any project leftovers they would be willing to give? I am happy to pay for your trouble.

I couldnt post this in the other leatherworking subreddit because it was flagging it at promotional because I'm discussing buying and selling, though in this case it is more just looking for advice/a friendly favor.

Thank you!

So I purchased this jacket on Facebook marketplace for 5 dollars knowing it was in bad condition. I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to potentially restore it or if it’s permanently ruined. All advice and input is welcome and appreciated

80 Proof Leather is STILL A SCAM

While it has been a topic before, let's bring it up again. It is a year to the day since I placed an order with 80 Proof, and it has been crickets. I have commented on videos daily, sent emails, and submitted forms, and nothing. I do not understand how we are saying 8+ week lead times, and it is a whole YEAR, and we post daily videos and can't respond. I can't even do a chargeback, and these were supposed to be client gifts last year for Christmas.

General Question Rocado Shell Cordovan – how should I work with it?

Thumbnail

How should I work with Cordovan to avoid staining it during production? I was very careful, but despite that, there are still faint marks from Tokonol / leather glue visible on it. Do you have any way of removing this, or any tips on how to carry out this sort of work?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Beginner Question Looking at trying to recreate a wallet, struggling with some stuff, advice wanted

Hello everyone!

I am fairly new to leather crafting, and am currently trying to recreate a wallet as a Christmas gift. The wallet itself is fairly odd so I'm here to seek advice for a few things. From what I can tell it's two pouches with a space in between and an extra flap for the ID.

I am struggling with how to create a template to make something similar and was hoping y'all might be able to point me in the right direction.

Unfortunately I don't have physical access to the wallet, and am kind of reliant on these photos.

Any help would be fantastic, thanks

How do I stop the watch holes from stretching?

Hello everyone. I am aspiring to make a leather watch band for my garmin watch. I have zero leather working experience.

I tried to make this prototype just to learn how to work with leather. I will then try to make a final version. I know this isn’t high quality work, but it was for learning.

How do I get the holes to stop stretching from the watch clasp??

Discussion What do you do with all those prototypes, and projects that didn't quite turn out?

I'm trying to organise my workshop, and my personal spaces, and I'm realising I have a lot of finished pieces that I will never use, but also are either used, or prototypes that are not sales-worthy. Mostly things like minimalist wallets and journal covers.

Options I've considered:

- Offer items for free via local networks (FB free groups, etc)
- Toss them in as freebies in larger orders (but then it feels like I'm pawning stuff off on customers?)
- Donate to local op shop
- Salvage any usable leather/hardware and bin the rest
- Carry them on me and give them away to coworkers/friends/randos.
- Sell in a special section on my website where they are super cheap, with full disclosure of wear/use/design shortcomings.

What do you guys do with your misfit projects?
