Question - Вопрос Community Post

This community hasn’t had, or needed much moderation. You guys all have a very positive learning based mindset, and are making the most of the subreddit.
Seeing as you guys just passed 15,000 members, I thought it’d be a good time for a community discussion.
Use the comments to think over what you want to see changed in the subreddit. Maybe you have a problem with spam or people DM’ing, maybe you want a weekly discussions post with a fixed topic, etcetera.
My suggestion is a semi-weekly or monthly post for people looking for a study partner. We can make flairs so people can show their experience level, and whatever else you guys think would work out well.

Also, if anyone has experience with moderating community events on Reddit, or setting up graphics, or specialized auto-mod, or anything else you want to add to your subreddit let me know. This is one of the best communities on Reddit, and I’m not doing it justice by sitting idle. Sorry for the hiatus, but here’s the authority, back to the people actually learning and experiencing this sub. Cheers.

Learning Russian without studying (current progress)

Hey everyone! I started learning Russian 18 days ago and decided to do it without any traditional study to see how far I can get. I just listen to Russian videos, look at Russian subtitles as the video plays and then look up a word if I hear it over and over again. So far with 10 hours of listening, I have learned 53 words. So I am very curious and excited to see how it continues to go. If you are interested in updates, definitely keep in touch!

Question - Вопрос Best method for learning Russian?

I was using Duolingo for a while and it didn’t teach me anything. I know the alphabet and how to pronounce the letters in words but I don’t know anything about the grammar or meanings of words. Should I switch to books or some other method?

Russian for adults. Structured courses, clear grammar & speaking practice. 17 years of teaching experience

Tired of studying Russian grammar only to forget it a week later? Or understanding the rules but struggling to use them when you speak?

I'm Irina, a professional Russian teacher with 17 years of experience. I offer individual, structured Russian courses for adults, from complete beginners to advanced learners.

My approach is simple: learning Russian shouldn't mean jumping between unrelated topics, memorizing endless grammar tables, or constantly starting from scratch.

What makes my lessons different?

A complete, structured course
You're not booking a series of random lessons. You'll follow a carefully organized program where grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, and reading develop together. Every new topic builds on what you've already learned.

Grammar you'll actually understand and use
Russian cases, verb aspects, verbs of motion, and other difficult topics don't have to remain a mystery. I explain how these structures work, often using comparisons with English, and help you apply them in practical situations rather than simply memorizing rules.

Regular revision instead of constant forgetting
Previously studied material doesn't disappear once we move to a new topic. We continuously revisit and reuse it through exercises, dialogues, and speaking practice, helping you turn passive knowledge into active language skills.

Your own organized learning space
Your learning doesn't end when the lesson does. You'll have a personal learning space with organized course materials, making it easy to review previous lessons and practise independently.

Depending on your course, materials may include interactive flashcards, quizzes, homework, PDFs, and audio or video resources.

Professional qualifications and individual attention
I have a degree from Tver State University and a professional qualification in Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language from the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute.

My courses follow a clear structure, but the pace, explanations, and amount of practice are adapted to your level, difficulties, and goals.

Who are my lessons for?

Complete beginners who want to build a solid foundation from the start.

Intermediate learners who know the rules but struggle to use Russian independently.

Advanced learners who want to improve accuracy, expand vocabulary, and develop more natural communication.

Students who prefer a systematic course over occasional conversation sessions or disconnected lessons.

The first introductory meeting is free. We can discuss your goals, current level, and how I would organize your learning. You can find my qualifications, student reviews, lesson rates, and booking information here: www.ruslangnest.com

If you're looking for more than occasional Russian practice and want a professional teacher, a clear learning plan, and consistent progress, I'd be happy to work with you.

- I have telegram!!

Еще раз привет, мне трудно отвечать всем; если вам интересно, вы можете написать мне в телеграмме@spookystarwberrymlik

Discussion - Обсуждение Looking for high level audio content

Hello

I am what I would call a half native speaker.

My russian is pretty good but I lack some of the cultural and historical context behind certain phrases.

I have the time to to truly focus on my language learning at the moment and am looking for some podcasts/ YouTube channel recommendations.

I also want to better understand the mentality and therefore would like to watch film / content that is integral to the culture, I watched ну, погоди и бременские музыканты growing up. But I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about things such as Yuri announcing russia's involvement in WW2.

https://youtu.be/XXpZEA32Pt4?feature=shared

It would be great if I could have different suggestions for different topics such as:

  1. A comedy one / normal verbiage / fun

  2. A high level philosophical / political one with interviews etc

  3. One that explains the meaning behind idioms

  4. A channel for watching historical speeches

Thanks

Starting to learn Russian — what should I focus on first?

Hi! I'm from Nicaragua and I'm just starting to learn Russian. I'd really like to eventually become comfortable with the language, so I'm trying to figure out what I should focus on during the beginning.

For those who have learned Russian or are native speakers, what would you recommend focusing on during the first few months?

Are there any particular grammar topics, vocabulary, pronunciation habits, resources, or common mistakes that you think are especially important for beginners?

I'd love to hear what worked for you!

Discussion - Обсуждение A Russian reading trainer built by a bilingual NLP engineer - looking for feedback

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi! I'm bilingual in Russian and Dutch, also speak English and Chinese, and build NLP systems for a living as a data and AI engineer. I developed RusClip, an Android app for practising reading in Russian.

It's a reading trainer, not a grammar course. The idea is to get used to the Russian people actually read and write: graded stories from A1 to B2, but also how official documents are worded, how Russian speakers text each other, what product reviews sound like, proverbs and everyday phrases.

How it works:

- Tap a sentence to see its full translation and every word with its meaning in context, dictionary form, stress and pronunciation

- Save words and review them with spaced repetition (FSRS)

- Small trainers for sounds and word parts (prefixes, roots, endings)

- Paste your own Russian text and get the same breakdown

- Interface in English, Russian and Chinese

It's just been released, so there are rough edges. If anything feels confusing or missing, DM me - and if you send detailed feedback, I'll give you a couple of weeks of Pro.

RusClip on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.rusclip.android

(Android only for now.)

Cases trainer app to share

Hi everyone,

I had fun creating a little cases trainer app with AI and would be happy to get your feedback.

It runs on windows, and supposedly on Linux and MacOS, haven't tried for the last 2.

It is free and will stay like that.

Enjoy ;-)

Deciphering a Tricky Word

Post image

I can read most of this passage from Pravda in 1924, but there's one word I cannot get. "All the conversations about the full restoration of agriculture in Ukraine are nonsense, so long as they depend on "***** rain."

It looks like Asian, but that really doesn't make any sense. Can anyone decipher it?

Learning Russian through DayZ | Episode 5 [Comprehensible Input / Slow Russian

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ve just released Episode 5 of my Russian learning series using games!

How it works: I play DayZ while narrating my actions in slow, clear Russian using simple vocabulary and context from the gameplay. The idea is to apply the Comprehensible Input method so you can acquire the language naturally without constant translation.

🎬 Watch Episode 5 here: https://youtu.be/bJ8a8EHo_4U

📁 Full Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdVfeTh8scZU

Since I’m actively working on improving the series, I’d really appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or thoughts from you guys!

Hope this helps your Russian listening practice! 🎧💬
