PSA World Cup Related Posts

Just wanted to let everyone know that posts regarding the World Cup will be allowed on here, even if not directly related to Lawrence. We're kinda bending the rules here but it's such a big and exciting event that we don't wanna hinder any chat about it or relevant info.

Normal subreddit rules will still apply to the posts (with exception of being directly Lawrence related, of course) so this doesn't mean you can just post whatever as long as it mentions the World Cup.

Obligatory no ticket-sales posts/comments.

Official Monthly Housing Thread

This is the official thread for networking and discussion about Lawrence housing.

r/Lawrence is a low post volume subreddit, and there have been problems in the past with it being overrun by ads and personal listings, so for the sake of the community please keep housing discussion here and don't create any additional posts on this topic.

A new thread will be created each month.

Guys, what keeps kablamming at 10:30, 11 at night this week? Bob Billings area maybe? I can’t really tell how far away it is but it straight up sounds like a cannon firing…anyone else hearing this?

Vote early! Vote NO!

Visit this link for a very good and easy to understand explanation of the amendment. Spread it around to everyone you know. Kansas voters could be in big trouble if this passes.

Missed connection Checkers 10/16

You were coming from maybe the cleaning supplies/household goods aisle around 5:30 and we caught eyes as I passed through the main aisle. You were a tall slim 40s (M) with short brown hair, wearing a fitted puffer coat-I won’t say what color to hopefully screen weirdos. I was the 40s brunette in navy cardigan and jeans.

Maybe you just were looking at the spices/chips display/whatever was behind me, or perhaps you’re partnered, which if that’s the case please disregard.

Completely out of character for me to post this, but you caught my eye and had a kind look, and I regret not finding an excuse to make conversation.

Lost Animal Lost cat

My cat Louie escaped while I was walking out of the Lewis Vet clinic on 6th and Lawrence Avenue. She is a female short hair dark green with black stripes. She is friendly but scared. She is vaccinated and spayed. She is most likely up a tree south of the Lewis Vet, but I couldn't find her. If you find her please contact the Lewis Vet clinic or send me a message. I found a picture. She has extra toes that look like cat thumbs. She has no collar or chip.

Uber and Lyft at night?

I rarely go out and about at night but am doing so on a rare occasion soon. Do people feel that ride-share apps are actually pretty reliable in town? Especially at night? I’ve heard mixed reviews during the day but nothing really for late night ones. Also want to make sure I’m not going to chose one app that happens to have no traction in town and end up having to wait 15 minutes downloading the other on the street.

Rant Traffic light woes 🚦

So I was just at the traffic light 🚦 at 33rd street and Iowa Street trying to turn left. The light oscillates from red arrow to flashing yellow and back again and again never turning green ever.

I was just patiently waiting for the safe opening to turn but there was never a safe opening as drivers behind me were honking at me begging me to drive into incoming traffic.

Yeah crazy that someone programmed this light.

AI Policy at Lawrence Public Schools?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone who has children in Lawrence Public Schools could share if there is an AI policy or if it is left up to individual teachers/schools. I know there was a previous working group, but has anyone heard any progress? Does anyone know if it is being used at the elementary level? For context, I know it's a tool and it's here to stay, however, I have real concerns about students becoming too dependent, cognitive offloading and the destruction of creativity, among other things.

Question Horror movie group

Good evening everyone! I wanted to see if anyone here has noticed a group where someone tried to create a horror movie group. They posted it on meetup, but it never gained traction. I’d like to know if anyone would be interested in joining a horror movie group here in Lawrence. I believe this is the ideal time of the month to start one. I completely understand that this would be for Halloween, and it’s all in good fun. Members can watch different movies within the group. The first movie I want to start with is “One Eye Open,” which will be showing at Liberty Hall on October 23. I highly recommend checking out the trailer for this movie; it’s really good and quite scary. If that’s your kind of thing, let’s start this horror movie group and see where it goes. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, and now seems like the perfect time to make it happen. I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this group. I’d appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have. This would be a great way for us to be part of the community and enjoy movies at Liberty Hall. I hope this group can gather weekly and see if it takes off. I look forward to hearing from everyone soon. Thanks!

The documentary of we are fugazi from washington d.c. (2023)

Tonight I saw a really good documentary at Liberty Hall about Fugazi, a band from Washington, DC. I had never heard of them before, and I was blown away by their documentary.

It showed me that bands really do care about their fans and that they just don't give a fuck. They will play their music the way they want to play it and they want everyone to enjoy it no matter what age you are. It said in the documentary that a lot of people can't go see their favorite band because they are underage. This band is completely different. They want their fans to come to their show no matter how old or young they are. They want their fans to listen to their music and feel the experience of watching their favorite artist perform live.

As someone who has been to 100+ concerts, I would definitely say it's a lot better to watch your favorite band perform live than to listen to their music on Spotify. There's that sense of enjoyment and entertainment and that feeling and the rush you get every time the drummer hits the drums. It's a feeling you cannot get if you're just listening on Spotify. These types of bands need to be seen.

I also loved the way they just took an ordinary camera and taped all of their shows before there were cell phones and digital cameras. I loved the way some of them told the story behind the camera and really captured the moment of the band playing live. They said in one part of the documentary that the best part of pressing the record button is watching it live as well. I get that feeling every time I press record on my cell phone with my favorite band performing my favorite songs while I'm rocking out in the audience.

This documentary also taught me how to be kind to people. You should always be kind to your fans and never let that get away from you. I have never seen a band have technical difficulties and not stop playing and keep going. I've always seen a band stop and start again if there were technical difficulties, but Fugazi never once stopped when the power went out on stage or they blew a fuse on the guitar amp.

I thought this was the greatest documentary about Fugazi that has ever been made. It makes me want to love music even more and continue going out there and watching my favorite bands/artists play live. I am not going to stop going to live shows until I either lose my eyesight or my hearing from all the noise and bright lights and lasers.

At this point, I would like to take some time to see what others think about this documentary. I know it was almost a packed house at Liberty Hall tonight, so I thought I would get on here and give my thoughts about Fugazi. Now it's your turn to give your opinion and thoughts on what you thought about the documentary. I'll be excited to see what people have to say, and I hope you loved it as much as I did!

Question Which library is best?

I’m newer to Lawrence and live on the west side. I wanted to get a library card but when I looked up libraries in Lawrence there’s multiple. Which one is the best one that you recommend? I love to read but don’t frequent them too much so one across town wouldn’t bother me.
