Hello!

We're looking to expand the mod team here and, with a change in Labour leader thought now is a fantastic time for some recruitment.

There are a few requirements:

  • By convention be a member of the Labour Party

  • Active member of the LabourUK community here on the Subreddit.

  • We do quite a bit of mod organising via moderation channels on Discord so must be happy to use it.

  • Has the temperament to moderate heated discussions and able to respond appropriately to nasty or aggressive challenges to moderation action.

  • Accept that you will see a lot of crap. Possibly even the worst shit. By definition more of your time will be spent looking at contentious posts, you will also make decisions people will disagree with - you can very rarely be everyone's friend here.

  • You will make a bad call at some point. Having the ability to turn around and put your hands up and reflect is real positive.

  • It is expected you will conform to the existing moderating style, not "do your own thing" and you need to be a good "fit" in general.

Below are a set of questions for you to fill out and send to us via modmail. The more information you provide the better:

  1. Why do you want to be a moderator on r/LabourUK

  2. Are you a current Labour Party member?

  3. Personal statement (~200 words): A few expanded words about yourself, your personality, and what makes you think you’re the right person to be a mod.

  4. Are you willing to join, and be active on the Discord channel? (It's were we discuss and track moderation)

  5. Do you have any other online social media presences (established)?

  6. Are you active in any other communities, and what do you like about them?

  7. What would you bring to the moderation team?

  8. What changes would you like to see?

  9. What do you think the subreddit has gotten wrong?

  10. What activities do you undertake as part of the Labour Party?

Any questions ask here or send a modmail and we'll take a look at it.

New report "Not Safe to Be Me" documenting trans children's experiences of Labour's new Section 28

The link to the report is here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/t3alqkpcw5o0b408nccvq/Not_Safe_to_Be_Me_Report-19.pdf?rlkey=eohaocyldjtrnw5zl5290bivc&e=1&dl=0

"According to the account Katie shared in the video, which is based on what Abbie's family told her, Abbie had used the girls' toilets and changing rooms with her headteacher's permission for two years and was accepted by her classmates, few of whom knew she was trans. At the end of the last school year, a PE teacher told her off for using the girls' changing room. The family understood from the school that it wanted to stay trans inclusive, but believed the new Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2026guidance required it to change the arrangements for her.

The family says that when Abbie returned in September, she had to change alone in the disabled toilet and wait in the corridor. Other pupils noticed, rumours spread that she was trans, and name calling and bullying followed. Her parents then removed her from school to home educate her"
---

"Young person after young person described being outed, shut out of toilets, bullied and pushed out of school, and many told me they are already too frightened to be themselves. This is not a future risk. It is happening now, in classrooms across the country, and every week this Labour Government leaves the guidance in place, more children are harmed. It must be revised before another child loses their education, or worse"

---
The following are all comments from trans children themselves (sometimes anonymised to protect their identity) or sometimes the adults of trans children about their experiences:

Toilets, changing rooms and PE:

"They have teachers stood outside the bathrooms checking who goes inside."

"I got forced to change in the hallway. The OPEN hallway.

Forced outing and parental notification:

"My college contacted my parents [and] used my preferred name despite me asking them specifically not to."

"A non binary pupil said they could not confide in a teacher because staff would tell their parents, who they described as very transphobic and likely to throw them out."

"Another non binary pupil said their school had already outed them to their parents"

Misgendering and deadnaming by staff:

"Not one of the teachers uses the correct pronouns for me.

"I started getting bullied when one teacher refused to address me as male. And from there it spiralled.

"Others say teachers they describe as transphobic marked them as male on tests and placing them on the "boys' side"."

Bullying, harassment and violence:

"I still get interrogated and confronted about my gender identity about two times a day."

"A gender non conforming pupil was "relentlessly sexually harassed" and told only to "stay away from them"

Exclusion from education:

"We just left our school due to intolerable bullying and moved online at great cost. She's now missed a considerable amount of year 11."

"I had to be taken out of school for this exact reason except I'm a trans guy."

Fear of coming out and staying closeted:

"I was finally ready to come out this year, but the Labour guidance has undoubtedly made it much less safe for me."

Am reposting as apparently the last attempt broke rule 6 (title and headline matching), despite the title auto generating when I pasted the link. Hopefully it’s acceptable this time as have changed the title to match the headline when opening the link.

In a public letter addressed to Culture Secretary Nandy and Chancellor Healey, and published in the Byline Times this morning, the NGOs – including Oxfam, Hacked Off, Patriotic Millionaires UK, Tax Justice UK and the Tax Justice Network – are calling on the UK government to require the papers to sign up to an approved press regulator if IPSO, a self-regulating body, fails to investigate the “millionaire exodus” reporting.

British under-30s set to work in EU again as UK pushes for Brexit reset

British under-30s could soon be able to work freely in any job in Europe – as Andy Burnham sets his sights on a closer relationship with the EU.

Brussels is understood to be in talks with other EU states to allow young people to work in the UK without restrictions, following tense negotiations over the Youth Experience Scheme.

Previous discussions have raised concerns that young Britons may face tighter restrictions than their counterparts coming to the UK, as individual member states have the final say over who can be issued work visas in their country.

But, according to The i Paper, Brussels is seeking an agreement with EU countries to ensure Britons will be able to work in any job under the scheme. The UK side would be willing to accept this agreement, the newspaper reported.

Mr Burnham has promised to use the UK-EU summit in Brussels next month to push for improved relations with the bloc.

UK and Brussels are still working on how many people will be able to access the youth mobility scheme, with the UK wanting to limit the number of young people who come into the country to below 50,000, while the EU wants a cap of 150,000 visas.

According to the newspaper, EU states are also considering delaying a demand to reduce tuition fees, which has been one of the thorniest issues in discussions.

EU member states have pushed for young people to access home fee status, while the UK has resisted lowering tuition fees amid pressure from universities.
