Weekly Discussion Thread - June 27, 2025

The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.

4th trip out since getting the kayak, lake trout!

Did a bit of research on lake trout the last two days and started to think about trying to catch one. Became really interested in how they’re a deeper water fish and generally more difficult to catch without electronics. I only got one bite all afternoon and it was the fish I came for! My first ever, a nice 20” laker.

Almost didn’t go because it was really cold and windy, but you know what they say, dry lines don’t catch fish

Oldtown sportsman mk Battery box wire issue

I own a sportsman old town 106 mk. Been great so far. I just pulled the battery out to charge it to go out tomorrow and noticed one of the battery screws (that holds the wires the batt) was kind of warped. Looks like the battery wire terminals from the battery box have warn thru to bare wire. The black negative one has gone all the way thru (this was the side where the battery nut was melted). The positive red one looks like it's about to get all the way thru pretty soon as well.

Is this still safe to use?

Is this a battery issue or a battery box wiring issue?

I contacted old town to get their take but figured I'd post here as well.

I also noticed that the Bluetooth portion of the battery isn't showing up in the app anymore. Could be coincidence but I doubt it as it showed up really quick when I first opened it but then disappeared. Either way, now I don't know how much charge it has.

Nucanoe U10 or OldTown Sportsman PDL 120?

I have the opportunity to either get a OldTown PDL 120 or a Nucanoe U10. The Oldtown has the Navarre offset motor plate and a transom motor mount attached. The U10 has a full pad kit, 280cm paddle, and the nucanoe trolling motor mount. I have a 30lb minn kota endura trolling motor and it's not really in the cards for the foreseeable future to upgrade to a bigger motor after getting the kayak. I can really only afford/have the space for one fishing kayak right now. It will be my primary fishing medium. While I do have the motor I do like to kayak for exercise as well. My main concern would be paddling the U10 would feel bad and using the trolling motor with the U joint handle might get cumbersome or in the way. But I really like the throw and go capability of it and the 360 swivel seat as well as the super open deck. On the other hand I like the idea of having the pedal drive on the OldTown so I can fish and move a little bit at the same time. Also I like the idea of being able to steer the trolling motor while it's on with the rudder. My main concern with the old town is having the pdl drive in the way and not having a super open deck might get annoying. I mainly fish small to medium sized laked and very very occasionally drive to a slow river a few hours away.

Based on all that which one would be the better option? Looking for opinions about this from people who've owned one or the other or tried both.

Thanks!

(I have a truck bed with bed extender and would be buying a kayak cart so not really worried about transportation loading/unloading)

Seeking advice for repair / replacement -ReelYak Radar prop drive

Post image
3 Upvotes

Won a used radar yak for 450$ on a local auction. Found out on pickup that it didn’t come with a seat 🥲 I noticed too that it doesn’t have two front mount rails where the seat would go. Am I okay to find a seat that only goes into the rear seat holders? If not any recommendations on what would fit? This is my first kayak.
In regard to a compatible seat, will any stadium seat do? Recommendations on comfortable but budget friendly seat?
Thanks for any advice or recommendations on what to do next.

Towing my gear through a small float attached to my yak.

Post image

As the title says, i planning to get a electric motor aling with battery and my main concern is the weught limit as i will be at 90 to 95% of kayak limits including all the gear.

I have read that it is not possible for stabilizers to support with weight but rather can help with stability.

ChatGPT came with an idea of towing some gears with a floats ( ideally inflatable cooler as shown in the picture)

I am thinking of keeping the battery inside as it weighs around 10 to 12 kgs which reduces the weight on my kayak.

For information, i already have stabilizers attached to my kayak which really helps with swels and sudden baots passing by.

I would really appreciate your inputs, experience and what to expect.

Trolling motor with spot lock

What's the best or most affordable trolling motors with spot lock? Don't wanna cheap out and get something I regret. But also want something that will go at a decent clip? Looking at a 12 foot kayak crescent light tackle II apparently it takes a motor pretty easily

Newport NK180 vs NK300

Which would you go with?

Wilderness systems recon 120. I weight about 185lbs.

I fish in rivers with current and would also like to take it into some intracoastal waterways occasionally. There’s a reservoir near me that I’d like to cover more ground on.

These days I don’t go out for more than about a four hour session max.

Would you concider this a sit on top kayak?

Im trying to post this on Facebook as a next level up from a sit on top kayak.

It has 2 built in trolling motors recessed into the hull so they cant get hit with rocks and weeds.

Its somewhere between a boat and a kayak imo. I added a 5hp motor to the back to fight strong currents in the CA Delta.

Edit: I see the comment are in line. Thank you.

So how would you post this to be up against PDL Kayaks. Im posting for $3000 with everything included.

Lakeview Kayaks Angler Propel 10?????

Hey everyone, I've been considering making an offer on this secondhand kayak for about a week now and I've been trying my darndest to do some research on it. A lot of people think this is a Alibaba generic kayak re-branded. Some say it's the same as a Brooklyn kayak company model, or the Root Mako 10, or the Lost Creek Angler 10 but I haven't been able to find an exact match visually for any of those models. I just can't find much on it. Anyone have any insight? (I hope I'm allowed to post this link. I didn't see anything about it in the rules of this subreddit.) Thanks!

Fish Finder for Smaller rivers

My kayak came with a scupper mounted transducer so I have been looking into fish finders. I generally fish mid-smaller rivers and was wondering how well these work in these conditions. I have heard mixed reviews and would appreciate any insight.

Hull ID issue.

I got a wilderness systems recon 120 in a trade. The hull id is barely legible, but from what I can decipher it does not match the Hull ID format correctly. (Letters where numbers should be) and the first three letters which should be the manufacturer id are not what my states DNR say they should be. I’m trying to register it so I can put a motor on it. Has anyone had luck contacting anyone at Wilderness Systems? I can’t find info on their website on how to contact them. Just trying to properly decipher the HID so I can get this thing registered.
