Hello! I'd like to share a project that I've been running on Discord for the last 5 years, 手書きの火曜日 (Tegaki Tuesday). It's a weekly Japanese handwriting challenge where every Tuesday there is a new prompt to submit to, usually picked from a stanza or two of a Vocaloid song or some other music. You write the challenge, submit, and then get feedback.

For the last couple months we've also been running a daily Kanji of the Day challenge. It basically works the same way, but instead it's a random daily kanji that's automatically posted for you to practice. The difficulty (and obscurity) of kanji ramps up through the week, culminating in the hardest kanji on Tuesday, so this keeps things entertaining (it's not just Joyo kanji).

We also have the entirety of 百人一首 (Hyakunin Isshu) available as challenges you can practice https://tegakituesday.com/hyakunin-isshu You are able to create your own challenges as well to share with the community and submit to!

I've been running this for a while but haven't really ever tried to advertise, so I'd be really happy if this could be helpful to more people.

Announcement New moderation and rules! AI slop is now banned.

This subreddit is under new moderation! Please check the new rules before posting, namely:

  • No AI slop. Resource posts where the app and/or post content appear to be AI-generated will be removed at moderator discretion, and may result in a ban. To be clear, if you use AI tools to help develop your app, I don't care, but if it obviously looks like something you just asked Claude Code or Codex to slap together, it will be removed.
    • If English is not your native language and you want to use AI for translation, please disclose this and also include the post content in your native language.
  • No hiragana/katakana learning apps. There is already a sea of kana learning resources out there.
  • No proprietary SaaS (Software as a Service, i.e. online) reinventions of the wheel (but worse). If your application is proprietary SaaS and you don't have a meaningful explanation of why it provides advantages over an existing, established project such as Anki or jpdb.io, your post will be removed.
  • No obscure proprietary desktop apps. Proprietary desktop apps cannot be audited to ensure that they are safe, so we cannot allow these apps in good conscience. If it's a well-known project with a user base, then exceptions may be given.

These rules are subject to change and will be applied retroactively to recent posts, hopefully this should cut down on the number of slop posts here and keep this subreddit limited to actually useful resources.

よろしくお願いします!

JLPT particles mini course/refresher

Link: https://jlptopencatalogue.com/courses/particles

N5: https://jlptopencatalogue.com/courses/particles/n5

N4: https://jlptopencatalogue.com/courses/particles/n4

What's in it:

Seven rules: を for the object (and the place you leave), に for a point in time or space or a person, で for where an action happens and what it's done with, に vs で, が for subjects and likes, と, and から/まで/までに.

Ten questions per level, getting harder. Tap a particle and you see at once whether it fits, why, and what the tempting wrong answer gets wrong (ぎんこうに vs ぎんこうで, ねこを vs ねこが, the passive's に, あく vs あける). Every question has exactly one natural answer; wherever two particles could both work, I swapped the sentence out.

Bored of kanji flashcards? I turned them into a game you can play in your browser

Kanji flashcards bored me to death, so I made a game instead.

  • Free, plays in your browser
  • No sign-up needed, just hit play
  • Covers N5 to N2

It’s still early, so tell me what’s fun, what’s confusing, and what’s broken. Good luck to everyone taking the JLPT in December!

Looking for an Online Japanese Tutor for JLPT N5 for July 2027 Exam

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a Japanese tutor or a small online group class to prepare for the JLPT N5 exam in July 2027.

I'm a complete beginner, so I need someone who can teach me from the basics and guide me through the complete N5 syllabus.

What I'm looking for:

  • Live online or in-person (In Karachi, Pakistan) classes with a tutor.
  • A structured study plan covering hiragana, katakana, vocabulary, kanji, grammar, reading, and listening.
  • Practice tests and JLPT-style mock exams.
  • A teacher who can explain lessons in English or Urdu.

I'm serious about preparing for the July 2027 exam and want to follow a proper schedule (Anytime between 12:00 PM - 5:30 PM PST).

If you're a Japanese tutor or know a good tutor who offers beginner group classes, please comment or send me a Reddit DM.

Thank you!

Web Content How to solve the JLPT (sentence-building) question every time - a method + 10 practice questions per level

https://jlptopencatalogue.com/courses/star

The ★ question gives you four blanks, four pieces, and asks which piece lands on the star. Most people try to guess the ★ directly. Don't — build the whole sentence first, then read off the star.

The habits that solve almost every one:

  1. **Start from the end.** The words after the last blank are fixed. A verb wants its object (〜を), です wants a noun or adjective, ください wants a て-form.

  2. **Describers sit right before what they describe.** A plain-form verb piece is usually followed directly by a noun piece.

  3. **Particles point forward.** A piece ending in は/が/を/に/で needs something after it.

  4. **Keep fixed patterns together.** 〜てから, 〜ために, 〜ようになる always arrive in the same order — lock them first.

  5. **Reasons and conditions come first.** A clause ending in ので/から/ば/たら goes before the main clause.

Worked example (N4):

レポートは _ _ ★ _ ください。

Pieces: 先生に · 金曜日 · 出して · までに

- ください needs a て-form right before it → 出して is last.

- 金曜日 + までに is one unit (the deadline) → it goes first.

- 先生に (to whom) sits before the verb.

金曜日 / までに / **先生に** / 出して — the ★ is 先生に.

I made a free mini course with this method and ten practice questions per level (N5–N1), getting harder as you go. You tap the pieces into place and it shows the reasoning for each one:

Disclosure: it's my site. Free, no ads, no account needed. Happy to take feedback on the questions.

I’m making a RPG to learn Japanese while exploring real Tokyo neighborhoods! 🇯🇵

Hey everyone! 😊

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on for quite a while: NIHONGO DX7!
I’m a solo developer creating a pixel-art RPG where you learn Japanese by exploring Tokyo, talking to characters, completing quests, and practicing vocabulary through everyday situations.

The idea is to make learning Japanese feel like an adventure rather than just another study session.
But there’s something I’m particularly passionate about: recreating Tokyo’s real neighborhoods as faithfully as possible!
I’ve spent a lot of time reproducing recognizable streets, buildings, shops, and landmarks in places like Shinjuku, Shin-Okubo, Asakusa, and Ueno.
I love the idea that someone could play the game and later visit Tokyo and recognize places they’ve already explored! 🇯🇵

The free prologue is already available on the App Store, Google Play, and directly in your PC browser, with no installation required.
The game is available in both English and French.
If you’d like to check it out:
https://nihongodx7.com/english/index.html

I’d genuinely love to hear what fellow Japanese learners think about this approach! 😊

Finding new japanese learner from india

🇮🇳🇯🇵 Looking for Indian friends to learn Japanese together!

I'm from India and currently learning Japanese from the beginning. I'm practising Hiragana and preparing to work towards JLPT N5.

I'm looking for Hindi-speaking Indian beginners who want to:

- Study together for 1–2 hours daily

- Practise reading and writing Hiragana

- Learn vocabulary and grammar

- Take quizzes and test each other

- Prepare for JLPT N5 and eventually N3

We'll create a small online study group and help each other stay consistent.

Comment or message me if you're interested!

If you could understand Japanese for one day, what would you do first?

Read every handwritten sign in a tiny ramen shop? Understand the conversation at the next table? Finally catch the joke that didn’t survive the subtitles?

For me, that’s the appeal of learning Japanese: getting a little closer to the everyday things you’d otherwise miss.

I’m the developer of Kotoba Bloom, a Japanese-learning app with AI practice. That connection between language and curiosity about Japan is what I want to build around.

What’s one thing in Japan you’d love to understand without reaching for a translation?

If that sounds like your reason for learning too, here’s Kotoba Bloom:

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6778720212

Free to download, with optional paid plans. AI feedback can make mistakes.

The Yomitan Dokuen plugin now supports custom Anki export

... i.e. specifying note types and filling in field templates like "{expression}" and "{glossary}", in contrast to Dokuen's previous fixed-format export.

Bug reports welcome! (Or pull requests, of course.)

A few fields aren't supported yet (the full list is in the readme on GitHub), most notably {screenshot} and {clipboard-image}, but rest assured those are coming very soon. Actually the code for those is almost done, it's just waiting on a new host API rollout that adds support for passing the OCR image back to the plugin.

Enjoy!

Video Pretty easy, fun video. It seems like it's his first time playing minecraft, so he excitedly says and repeats the names of things and whatever just happened. Has text with minecraft tips or objectives popping up occasionally (but uses a thick font and no furigana).

,,【#1】EIKO!GO!!「マインクラフト」名場面集(EIKO!GO!!「Minecraft」Spectacular Scenes )"

I think it's good for upper beginner-early intermediate. It's a series, the premise being building his beautiful Eiko world with a castle. At least trying to. He even bought a minecraft book and comments sometimes help him out. I find that the pacing is nice over all, relatively easy to follow.
