Megathread Johnson County Voting Information

Note: We'll keep this updated as best as we can, but election information can, unfortunately, change quickly. For the latest, reach out to the auditor's office in-person @ 913 S. Dubuque St in IC, via phone @ 319-356-6004, or online @ https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/department-of-auditor. If you notice an error, PM me or send a modmail.

Deadlines

  • Mon, Oct 19, 5 PM: Last day to pre-register, and last day to request a mailed absentee ballot. The request has to be in the Auditor's office by 5, not postmarked.
  • Mon, Nov 2: Last day of in-person early voting.
  • Tue, Nov 3: Polls open 7 AM to 8 PM.
  • Generally speaking, mailed ballots must reach the Auditor's office by 8 PM on Election Day.

If you missed the registration deadline: You can still register at your polling place on Election Day. You'll need ID and proof of address.

Check your registration and find your polling place

Absentee voters: Iowa has no permanent absentee list, so if you voted by mail last time you still need a new request this time.

College students: You can choose to register at either your school or home address. If you register at school, you just need dorm name and room number. If you register at home, you vote there or absentee.

Polling place changes since 2024

  • Iowa City 4: Art Building West, 141 N. Riverside Dr.
  • Iowa City 27: back at Dream City, 611 Southgate Ave.
  • Madison: GreenState Credit Union, 2355 Landon Rd.

…and there is a table, staffed by what appear to be students, on the Cleary walkway as of a few minutes ago.

First time I’ve seen any student involvement with the Center whatsoever. That sure happened fast.

Touch of Mink Stories / History - Exotic Dancing Parlor

This morning I learned the existence of Touch of Mink and my mind is blown. As a life long IC resident I had no idea this place was ever a thing. Evidently there was ventriloquist exotic dancing?!?! I'd love nothing more than to hear stories from those that worked there or were customers. What were the vibes like? Tell me everything

Lost and Found Lost Wedding Ring

Post image
7 Upvotes

Not mine, just sharing from Nextdoor

I'm not sure if just anyone can open the link and see the post, so here's the details:

OOP is asking for help finding his mom's lost wedding ring. She says she may have lost it at Costco or Fareway in North Liberty. People are checking those stores, local pawn shops, etc. He's said that they've checked the Police Department, and someone says they saw a post where someone found it... But never got back on where said post was...

There's also a second post with more comments.

Attaching an image of said ring.

Community Fatou’s Family is Asking for Our Help

Post image
122 Upvotes

Fatou’s family is requesting that we all call all four congressional offices tomorrow (10/21/2026) to demand they urge DHS to bring her home to her children and family.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks: 202-225-6576

Sen. Chuck Grassley: 202-224-3744

Sen. Joni Ernst: 202-224-3254

Rep. Ashley Hinson: 202-225-2911

Short call script:

“Hi, my name is [name], and I live in [city, state]. I’m calling to demand immediate action to bring Iowa City mother Fatou Traore home to her four children. Please urge DHS to bring her back into the United States now. She faces persecution, imprisonment, and torture if Sierra Leone sends her to Ivory Coast. Her life is at stake. What will your office do today to bring Fatou back?”

Help Fatou’s family in this time of terror. Please keep families together. Share with family and friends. Tell a neighbor. Set alarms to call tomorrow. Think and feel positive energy. No Mother or child deserves this kind of torture nor pain.

Community Is it just me or is this whole jail thing being presented as something of false binary?

The current jail is old, too small, in need of serious repair or remodel, and pretty inefficient for today’s needs.

The new proposal costs a bajillion dollars, is in a weird location, and many private entities stand to benefit from its existence in a way that raises ethical concerns.

Why is the citizenry not allowed to advocate for a “neither” choice when it comes to keeping the old one or erecting the new super jail way out in BFE? It seems like a good chunk of (most?) voters would support a “back to the drawing board” option. I know folks who are team inmate advocate that feel arm-twisted into a new jail just for the better conditions. I know fiscally austere individuals that feel compelled to no due to the cost and ethical concerns.

Surely this isn’t the county itself saying “we already ponied up for cOnSuLtaNcY and we’re not gonna pull a cut and run and do it all over again?”

Looking for nail tech recommendations

Hi! I’m moving to Iowa City next month and I’m looking for any recommendations for a nail tech! I usually get gel with a design and a pedicure periodically. I’ve only ever gone to salon/spas but I’m open to independent techniques as well.

Local Politics UIHC employees, have you voted to keep your rights?

Post image
36 Upvotes

To vote “yes” means a vote to fair wages, secure retirement and healthcare, protection of bereavement time, enforcement of safe staffing, protection of staff from unfair treatment, discrimination, or retaliation, and so many more critical parts of a contract.
The Union protects our rights whilst advocating for our safety.

How to vote

1.) screenshot QR Code

2.) Access your photo gallery

3.) hold down on the QR code (apple users- 4 options will appear. Select the first option “Open in Safari”)

  1. Enter the proper information- Voting takes less than one minute:)

(I was going to include a link to vote. Reddit doesn’t allow link attachments with photos)

UPDATE FOUND! Thank you everyone for your help!

Hi everyone. Some contractors accidentally left the gate open on my friends house and his dog escaped. We have an AirTag on her but have not been able to pick up a signal. Her name is Lola. She is typically scared of people and will probably run away or growl at you. Please let me know if you see her!!!

Drywaller recommendations?

Getting the water service lines replaced at my home soon, possibly as early as next week, and then will need drywall repairs.

Any recommendations for affordable, professional drywall repair?

Hopefully everyone's not booked up months out. I haven't really been able to get estimates ahead of the plumbing work since I don't know exactly how much drywall they're going to remove to do the plumbing part of the job until they do it.

Electric Work Quote

I was quoted $995 for the following
- 2 ceiling fans have the fan mechanism from being hard wired to run off the switch that the light runs on.
- have 2 light switches separated so each switch only effects one light(currently tied together so when I turn off one light it turns off the other)

Is this a reasonable quote?
