Instant Photography Guide: From cheap Instax to professional Hasselblad setups

Hi everyone! I don't speak English very well, so I used an automatic translator for this post. I hope it will be helpful to some of you.

Hi! I’ve decided to put together a summary of the options you have in the world of instant photography, so you have it all in one place – types of cameras, formats, etc. If you’re tempted by the idea of having a physical photo in your hand immediately but feel lost in the current market, I hope this helps.

(Right off the bat, I should mention that I am avoidingĀ WideĀ models in this article, mainly because of their size and weight. I don't think they are practical cameras to just carry around. However, if anyone is interested in something specific regarding them, feel free to ask in the comments, and I’ll be happy to help.)

There are plenty of options today, so we’ll divide them into categories ranging from cheap basics to more expensive "lifestyle" cameras, all the way to semi-pro and professional machines. We’ll also look at different formats and film types because not all photos are the same. We have the classicĀ Instax Mini, Square, and Wide, as well as the legendaryĀ PolaroidĀ with itsĀ 600Ā or more modernĀ i-TypeĀ films.

Film prices (approximate per pack):

  • Instax Mini / Square / Wide:Ā approx. 220–300 CZK (€9–12 / $10–13) for 10 shots.
  • Polaroid i-Type:Ā approx. 420–470 CZK (€17–19 / $18–20) for 8 shots.
  • Polaroid 600:Ā approx. 520–600 CZK (€21–24 / $22–25) for 8 shots. As you can see, the number of shots varies. Instax has 10 per pack, Polaroid only 8. This makes a difference in the price per shot: about 25 CZK (€1 / $1) for Instax versus 55–70 CZK (€2.5 / $3) for Polaroid.

To start, I recommend the playfulĀ Instax MiniĀ for beginners. They are by far the cheapest and most popular, so you can find them on any second-hand market for a few bucks. Models likeĀ Instax Mini 11, 12, or 13Ā are pure automatics – you don't have to worry about anything, just press the shutter and the photo comes out. If you want a bit more control, go for theĀ Mini 70, which lets you select modes like Macro, Landscape, or Selfie mode. If you fall in love with this format and want something more, there are more expensive models like theĀ Instax Mini 90Ā orĀ Mini EVO. These have many settings, but be careful with models like the EVO – they are essentially hybrids with a screen. They are more like printers, which for some might take away the true sense of the "moment" and the surprise of whether the photo actually turned out well.

Next, we have theĀ Instax SquareĀ series. If you're looking for this square format, you'll mostly run into theĀ SQ1Ā andĀ SQ40. They are basically the same camera with a different design; the internals are the same automatic system. You can get them new for around 3,500 CZK (€140 / $150). The best model in this series is considered to be theĀ Instax SQ6. It offers options like turning off the flash, double exposure, or various color filters for the flash. The problem is that it’s an older model that is no longer in production, so you can only find it second-hand for around 5,000–6,000 CZK (€200–240 / $210–250).

I also want to mention theĀ LomographyĀ brand and their Instax cameras. For the Mini format, I recommend theĀ Lomo’Instant Automat, or for squares, theĀ Lomo’Instant Square Glass. Prices range from 2,500 CZK to 5,000 CZK (€100–200 / $110–210). They are often sold in kits with additional lenses like a fisheye or 75mm. Models with aĀ glass lensĀ are worth noting because the photos are significantly sharper and look better overall. But beware – for example, the Lomo’Instant Square is not a pure automatic; you have to play around with it and learn how to use it. You can also buy a "Splitzer," a gadget that covers part of the lens, allowing you to shoot one half of the photo first and then the other to create cool collages on a single frame.

A chapter of its own is theĀ Diana Instant Square. It’s also from Lomography, but honestly, it’s not very popular. The whole camera is plastic, feels quite cheap, and is very temperamental. On the other hand, it isĀ fully manual, so you can really experiment. You can choose from several apertures and set the focus distance (from 1 meter to infinity). It also has a Bulb mode for long exposures and multi-exposure capability. I only recommend it to people who enjoy a bit of a challenge. I personally like it, but if you don't want to think about settings and don't want to pull out photos that are either pitch black or totally overexposed, go for a different option. It’s more of a toy and a very moody machine for enthusiasts who love the imperfect "lo-fi" look. You can also buy a 75mm glass lens, which I consider essential. Price is around 3,500 CZK (€140 / $150) + 1,000 CZK (€40 / $45) for the glass lens.

If you want to dive deeper and look for something more interesting, there are cameras around 12,000 CZK (€480 / $510). These are for people who want control and don't want to rely on automation. One is theĀ InstantFlex TL70 2.0Ā (Mini format). It’s a twin-lens reflex (TLR) camera where you look into the viewfinder from above. It has manual focus and the ability to play with depth of field, so you can achieve a blurred background. Another interesting one is theĀ NONS SL660Ā (Square format). It’s a solid metal SLR with aĀ Canon EF lens mount. This means you can use almost any old lens via adapters. It has manual shutter speed and aperture control and an integrated light meter, so you can build the photo exactly how you want.

Moving up another level, I must mention theĀ InstantKon SF70Ā by MiNT Camera. This piece costs around 20,000–25,000 CZK (€800–1,000 / $850–1,050). It’s a folding rangefinder for the Square format that looks like a classic camera from the last century. You get full manual control over time, aperture, and focus, all with optics that are leagues above standard production.

I consider the absolute pinnacle to beĀ instant backs from NONS, which turn professional medium format cameras into instant cameras. This gets very expensive, and these machines are mostly found on second-hand markets. A decentĀ Mamiya RB67 or RZ67Ā set with a lens starts at 20,000 CZK (€800 / $850). If you're looking at the legendaryĀ Hasselblad 500 series, prices for a body with a lens usually range between 35,000 and 60,000 CZK (€1,400–2,400 / $1,500–2,550), with newer versions even exceeding 80,000 CZK (€3,200 / $3,400). To this, you need to add theĀ instant backĀ itself (approx. 7,000–10,000 CZK / €280–400 / $300–420) and, most importantly, aĀ special optical glass elementĀ (approx. 3,000 CZK / €120 / $130), without which you'd only get a small circle on the photo. It’s the most expensive path, but the output from these pro lenses is technically the best that exists.

Now to the legend itself – Polaroid. It’s all about nostalgia, the iconic large square, and specific colors. But a warning right at the start:Ā I don't recommend buying older Polaroid models from second-hand markets.Ā In my experience, people often lie or don't know what they’re selling. I’ve received several cameras that were supposed to be functional but were broken junk, often due to poor storage. If you go for a used one, do it in person and ask the seller to test it with film in front of you. Also, watch out for films – if they aren't fresh from the store, they might be old and create spots on the photos.

Regarding machines forĀ 600-type film, these range from 600 CZK (€25 / $25) to several thousand, depending on the edition. You’ll often see theĀ Polaroid ImpulseĀ series. These are robust machines with a pop-up flash. The basicĀ ImpulseĀ has a fixed focus, theĀ Impulse PortraitĀ has a sliding lens for portraits, and the best is theĀ Impulse 600 AF, which featuresĀ sonarĀ (the gold circle) to measure distance and focus automatically. Besides those, you’ll see classics like theĀ 635 CLĀ orĀ 636 CloseUp, which are simple automatics. If you want the ultimate classic, there’s theĀ SX-70. It’s a folding SLR with glass optics and manual focus, but prepare to pay 4,000–8,000 CZK (€160–320 / $170–340) depending on the condition. For beginners, the best bet is theĀ new modelsĀ with a warranty forĀ i-Type film, like theĀ Polaroid NowĀ orĀ Now+Ā (approx. 3,000–4,500 CZK / €120–180 / $130–190). I don't have experience with the newest models and I'm quite exhausted now, so I hope this summary helps!

Polaroid

I’ll take the liberty of adding some information that didn't occur to me while writing the article. Currently, Polaroid only manufactures film for the 600 and i-Type series. Regarding the SX-70 series, it seems that they are mostly just selling off remaining stock (at least in Europe, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find).

If you come across other Polaroid cameras on second-hand markets that use different film types, keep in mind that you will likely only find old, long-expired, expensive, and most likely completely non-functional film. Such cameras are basically just display pieces for your shelf nowadays.

I should also mention the Polaroid 660 AF Transparent. Shooting with it isn't very practical, as light leaks through the clear casing and ruins the film. Furthermore, I previously omitted the Polaroid Go, which produces even smaller photos than the Instax Mini. I initially found this irrelevant because the photos are incredibly small—the total dimensions are 66.6 Ɨ 53.9 mm, with an actual image area of just 47 Ɨ 46 mm.

Lastly, a tip for buyers: If you want to test a Polaroid 600 without buying new film, an empty used cartridge still contains enough battery power to check if the camera turns on and the flash fires. However, the used or empty cartridge must not be too old, otherwise, the battery inside will be dead. It’s a cheap way to avoid buying a broken unit.

NONS SL660

Regarding the NONS SL660, please keep in mind the discrepancy between the viewfinder and the actual photo. The viewfinder has a rectangular shape, whereas the photo is square. This means you see more on the sides in the viewfinder than what actually ends up in the picture. Conversely, the viewfinder is narrower than the final frame, so there is actually more captured at the top and bottom of the photo than what you see through the viewfinder.

Selfie Sunday with Lomo'Instant Wide Glass

I realized recently that I have had basically zero photos of myself in the last 5-6 years, whether selfies or photos taken by others, or really any photos with friends and family in general. I've always loved the vintage look of instant photos, so I bought the Lomo'Instant Wide Glass camera.

I'm finally starting to get the hang of taking shots (in the second shot, you can see notes I wrote about the settings to try to remember). the viewfinder is basically just a keyhole so what you see through the viewfinder has little relation to what you're actually taking a photo of. so, there's a lot of trial and error to get a feel for which zoom distance I should sue and what different kinds of lighting look like.

I ordered a flat bed scanner so that I can digitize photos soon!

Continually Surprised by this camera [Instax WideEvo]

The WideEvo came out top. I took almost three (well, 2.5) cameras with me to the park today: my old X100S, the silly iPhone and the WideEvo.

The WideEvo was the Goldilocks of the day. The iPhone was too easy. The X100S too hard. The WideEvo was somehow just right.

Impressions:

* The favourites are easy to access. I hadn't used this in a while except to take family photos with, but I found switching favourites to be quick and easy.Ā

* Love the colours. This camera is extremely versatile. Images end up with a satisfying Fuji colour surprise to them.Ā

* The shutter is mushy, but has a fun placement. It's sometimes hard to half-press because the camera goes off quickly. The good thing is, in nice light, the camera seems to find focus quite quickly.Ā

* The screen glares hard in sunlight. I'm not very photogenic, so staring at myself reflected on the rear screen is a pain. Lucky this thing just takes good shots regardless of what you point it at.

* I really should play more with the different effects. Mixing and matching on the Evos seems like so much fun. I think a more adventurous person would thrive on these.

* People are curious. Even in a quite quiet park, people are fascinated with this thing. I imagine you'd get stopped frequently in a city. Bring a spare pack of film with you.

* Fixed lens is more fun. At one stage, I had a chance to share some time with a few birds. The iPhone somehow came out, and it was just too easy. Having a fixed lens and quite a wider frame encourages movement, which brings you closer to your surroundings. The limitations of the camera provide much of the enjoyment. I ended up using the so-called ā€˜cinematic crop’ mostly because it made it even narrower and less phone-camera-like.

* Instax cameras are relaxing. They are easy shooters. Even though the X100S is a sentimental favourite, it's tricky. No tilt screen seemed to matter more on that than on the WideEvo. Because it's so auto, it's also more casual and forgiving. You think less and look more (if you know what I mean). I was actually out in the park today to sort out some thoughts, so perhaps the Instax would have been the better choice for that. You can play with images rather than work for them.Ā

* I hope you like the photos. Most are straight from the camera unedited.

Have fun shooting, everyone.

This morning it was grey and rainy and I went out with my Jollylook wooden pinhole camera and a pack of Instax square to take some pictures in the rain from the "frog perspective". Not the best weather for the light hungry Instax film but I gave it a try. The shots became very blueish.

Instax Mini Evo suddenly printing blurry, washed-out photos. Anyone experienced this?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I’ve been using my Instax Mini Evo for a while, and it used to print perfectly fine. However, recently, my prints have suddenly become noticeably blurry, faded, and less sharp than before.
I’ve noticed a few things:
The prints look washed out, with much lower contrast and less detail than before.
One of the photos also had multiple thin white horizontal lines across it.
The original photos are sharp and clear.
I’m still using Rich Mode, just like before.
I’ve tried printing both photos transferred from my phone and photos taken directly with the Mini Evo, but both come out blurry.
I’ve even switched to a brand-new pack of film, but the issue persists.
The film isn’t expired and has been stored properly.
The camera hasn’t been dropped or damaged.
The only recent change is that I switched to a new iPhone and paired it with my Mini Evo again, but I’m not sure if that could be related.
I’ve attached a comparison photo showing how my prints used to look versus how they look now.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be a problem with the printer mechanism, or is there something else I should check before assuming the camera is faulty?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

buying used instax mini

a local thrift shop is selling used instax minis for $10-15 and i've always been interested in purchasing one. they have instax 7 all the way up to 11 and they all power on but are not tested for function. some are pretty scuffed up and others are almost mint.

for example, is it worth buying an 11 thats scuffed vs a 7 that looks brand new?

is there any model in particular thats more prone to issues?

which model is recommend for my use case, which will probably be taking a few pictures of landmarks outside when i travel? basically want to use for scrapbooking.

[Instax Pal2] At night and on a wet arvo

Thumbnail
gallery
52 Upvotes

I decided to take the Pal2 out on a wet afternoon and then again at night (Inspired by Mike)

All shots are hand-held (plus I was shivering a bit at the time :).

Mostly just stuck with using the 'Pure' effect.

All shots unedited (except for straightening on the lookout bench). Again, I just want for people to see how the images come pretty much straight from camera.

Impressions

* Naturally, most shots are not salvageable. I'm not a great photographer and my glasses are all scratched up, so a lot of that is down to me. I'd say hit percentage is around 30-50% (for me)

* Wet and wobbly. I'd bring some sort of monopod or even just a stick if I were to go out again in lower light.

* Night shooting is fun. Stay safe. Perhaps go out with others.

* Really looking forward to patch/update later this month. 100 shot limit goes fast when shooting. Important to note that when shooting the 'burst video gimmick' feature, it takes single shots then mixes them in the app. Each individual image was taking shot-count on disk. Ended up out of space. (Images are quick to empty though with Mike's IOS photos app dump).

* Still fun to shoot, more so when shooting from the hip. Vertical is still challenging. The 'viewfinder' is pretty random.

* The camera is slow. Slow to start-up and scroll through filters. (Again hoping for this to be patched). Not as slow as a Charmera and you get used to it by starting it up as you step towards a subject. The camera is too slow to shoot anything moving with confidence.

* I like the on/off switch. It's stable. Doesn't turn on randomly.

* Metering is crazy. Easy to blow out, blow under. Take multiple shots at subjects and you might have lady luck shine her light for you.

* Photos look really good when printed on an Instax device (I have the WideEvo, so I have only tested on that, but I found it easy through the App and liked the results.

* I'm chasing a style for another project. The camera encourages creativity but is hard to control.

* It's still a toy. If you are looking for a 'camera' this is not that. It's an autoshooter that's fun to play with. Sort of a casual capture device.

* [Dreaming] I'd love if it was in all metal with the lever doing something cooler than fake framing (I'd pay a bit extra for this dream too). The sound of the lever is super satisfying however, I just wish it had some purpose. Add gimmick lenses (Fish-eye, Tele, Macro) and it would have been its own product, rather than an expensive (although fun) Charmera which shoots 10P images.

* Best aspect is its portability. It creeps its way down into your hand. For example, I've shot more with this thing than with my phone. That's got to count for something?!?

Have fun shooting everyone.

(PS: Spot the face in the alley? WTF is that? There's pareidolia, then there's whatever this demonic mugshot is. I'm not superstitious, but some mugs you just can't unsee. There's another reason to go out shooting with a partner or two at night.)

could you remove the roller motors in cameras and put in a crank?

so i really like the way some no battery instax cameras have like a crank so i wonder if i jut made a hole into it gutted the motor and put in a hand crank could that work?
