Self-submission Heavy Support Drone
Hovering heavy weapon that follows the user who designates targets via a laser targeting device.

This would go hard in helldivers, as a rover type, but with aim assist

That would be pretty great, would be interested to see how they'd implement something like this

Fires once, launched backwards several hundred meters.

So in this high tech futureverse with anti-materiel rifle hover drones, you don't think the engineers would have thought of that?
It's not like recoil impulse is random.

u/McDermott_art 6d ago
I imagine the engine on the back would prevent it from moving that far back

u/Lapis_Wolf 5d ago
Sounds like a lot of energy used. "Crap, tank's half empty now after that maneuver."

u/roadrunnuh 5d ago
At least put some creative effort into your criticism

u/Lapis_Wolf 4d ago
As in? What would you consider better criticism? I was remembering what someone said about the recoil of firing large guns without any traction to hold it down (in reference to the confederate tanks from Star Wars, which don't touch the ground like the drone above.

Y'all have never picked up a .500 magnum with and without a muzzle break to feel the difference and it shows.
You can stabalize recoil with a buffer and counterweight too. Something like a Kriss Vector in .45ACP has about the same recoil as a HK MP5 in 9mm parabellum.
Go to a range and rent some guns if you want to really experience recoil. I weigh a buck 50 soaking wet and I can shoot a .50bmg with a muzzle break pretty easily.

Go back to the range and stand a foot behind that .50BMG with a muzzle break.
Don't actually do that.

u/imreallynotthatcool 6d ago
Behind it you're not gonna feel much at all. The muzzle break directs the gasses up and at an angle to the sides. It's at about 3ft away behind and out to about a 45° angle you don't want to be standing.
That's part of the fun of going to the range and renting a .50BMG and paying $24 a trigger squeeze.
Wear safety glasses and hearing protection.

You could make this in real life. All you need is:
A Gm6 lynx .50 rifle [the inspiration for the pic] A suitable drone, probably a movie filming or logistics drone. Purple LEDs.

needs a much bigger mag and the laser should just be an attachment on the users weapon
1
u/McDermott_art 6d ago
Yeah that would probably be more practical, I think it makes it less interesting from a narrative or possibly game design perspective though

u/_WIZARD_SLEEVES_ 6d ago
Which part would be more practical? And how would it make it less interesting?
1
u/McDermott_art 6d ago
Well I meant that both things you mentioned would make it more practical, and I generally find powerful weapons work best in a story or gameplay when there's drawbacks, it's not always the case but it's something I like to think about when designing this sort of thing

You have to have a good reason they couldn't make it more practical, though.

u/McDermott_art 6d ago
Absolutely, a possible reason for the mag size is weight limit on the engines, it's already a fair bit of weight so they could be close to their limit. For the laser it the operating of the drone could be more complicated than point laser and click which would make attaching it to his weapon a less viable option.

How about an "ammo bearer drone" to support the first? MG crews usually come in two and the second guy carries extra belts/drums/boxes. A smaller drone that could reload the kinetic rounds and then maybe be a spotter when its not doing anything else. idk

u/McDermott_art 6d ago
That's a fun idea, definitely gonna play around with that concept in the future. I was imagining that ammo bearer was part of the soldiers role, with the backpack being for more ammo.

I thought this was a fan concept for a helldiver's drone at first, lol. Great art, I really like the angles on that helmet.

u/McDermott_art 6d ago
Thanks! The helmet shape was loosely based on a knight helmet with the visor up

Why not drum mag? Weight wouldn't be and issue
1
u/McDermott_art 5d ago
The weight thing I mentioned in another comment was more of an example to justify the smaller mag limit, but the real reason is that I didn't like how a drum or larger mag looked, and at the end of the day this is just a piece of art aha

Love the mp7 inspired smg in the 2nd pic.
Edit: nvm saw that's meant to be the laser? Still looks cool! Obvs your art to do what you like. I'd suggest a laser designator might be better suited as an attachment to a personal weapon? Akin to a peq15.

u/McDermott_art 4d ago
Thanks! You were right with the first part, the second image is an mp7 inspired smg that he has on a sling in the first image, it's a little hard to see though to be fair. The laser could have been designed as an attachment but I kinda liked the idea of it being a separate thing with the smg being a back up incase the big gun is taken out

To me, it doesn't really look like a purpose built weapons platform and more like someone stuck some hover bits to a gun. If it was more realistic, it would be mounted on a platform, almost like a mini tank, maybe with some form of autoloader.
As is, I guess if it had some kind of trigger assembly it could a case where your regular gun has a hover and self-firing mode. Regardless, I would expect this sort of thing to not be able to sustain flight for extended periods of time, being carried by the soldier when not firing, unless you have some kind of far future hover tech, in which case it's questionably why it fires projectiles instead of some kind of energy beam.
1
u/McDermott_art 5d ago
Why wouldn't it be capable of sustained flight? It's sci-fi, also there's so many properties with advanced tech that still use conventional firearms e.g. Halo, so I don't see it as a problem
1
u/kadzar 4d ago
Well, to use Halo as an example, sure, there's lots of advance technology present in the game, but hover technology is mostly used by the Covenant, who don't use projectile weapons for the most part. Compare that to the UNSC, who mostly use projectile weapons, and their vehicles use wheels, rather than anti-gravity, because they don't have mastery of the technology.
I mean, at the end of the day, it's all fiction, and you can do whatever you want. This is just my own personal perspective on the subject.
1
u/McDermott_art 4d ago
The UNSC may not have hover tech but they do have a lot of other very advanced stuff like faster than light travel and energy shields

Don't stand directly behind it when it fires.
