Question What horror game tropes are you tired of?

Post image

I play a lot of horror games and I have become tired of the use of mannequins. Don't get me wrong, they can be creepy, but man, every other indie horror game I play now has mannequins in it. Can we bring back some originality?

Question Can a long horror game stay scary from beginning to end?

Post image

I've been wondering whether it's possible for a horror game to maintain a genuinely scary atmosphere throughout a long playthrough, or if horror is simply better suited to shorter experiences.

Take, for example, the latest horror game I've been playing, Silver Pines. After a few hours, the enemies start to feel repetitive and aren't scary anymore. The same goes for the puzzles and other gameplay elements. It seems that once a game has shown you all its cards in the opening hours, it's hard for it to maintain a sense of horror. At that point, what keeps you engaged is either the tension of potentially dying (especially with a manual save system) or simply the story itself.

So, what are some longer horror games that managed to keep you scared or uncomfortable for most of the experience? What do you think they did differently?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially on what makes horror lose its impact over time.

Looking for small horror content creators 😘

Hi everyone!

I'm an indie developer and I've recently released a 2D horror/mystery game made with RPG Maker MZ.

The game focuses on atmosphere, exploration, mystery and storytelling. You explore an abandoned village, investigate what happened there, find documents and clues, and finally uncover the darker side of its story. It's a fairly long game (around 10–14 hours for a full playthrough), but there's also a free demo playable online on itch, that lasts a little over an hour, so you can get a good idea of the atmosphere and gameplay without committing to the full game.

I'm especially interested in finding YouTubers and streamers who enjoy indie horror, RPG Maker games, psychological horror, mystery or narrative-focused games.

If you're a content creator and you're interested in playing the full game, feel free to comment here or send me a DM. I'm more than happy to provide a key for the full version so you can play it from beginning to end.

No expectations or pressure, I'd just love to see someone experience the game and hear what they think.

Thanks for reading! 🖤

Question Anybody have any good multiplayer games?

So my brother and I have been getting into playing games together, but lately we thought about playing some horror games! We already decided on Phasmophobia but what are some others that can be played duo? Nothing too horrific because I don't know how much I can take lol.

Question I've played Hellraiser Revival a couple hours or more nightly (for more than a couple hours at a time) since it was released, from Oct.9th to Oct.19th, except for only three days. I'm still not finished (but really NOT complaining). Did anyone anticipate this game being almost the scale of RE 4?

Video I always appreciated the inventive camerawork in Keiichiro Toyama's games

Most praise Silent Hill for its highly evocative and cinematic camera angles, such as the famous alleyway intro or the ascent up the lighthouse steps, especially when most third-person action games seem to default to that same old OTS perspective since RE4 (which of course was extremely cool back then, too).

In this clip from Siren 2, the controlled character, Shu, has extremely poor vision. While playing as him, you're locked into first-person view, and everything appears dim and blurry. But by using the game's dedicated sightjack mechanic, Shu can see through his service dog's eyes and move about, creating a distinct perspective as he fumbles around the island. It's not a perfect method, which is what generates a feeling of tension as you avoid the armed villagers.

It's not really "fixed camera," but it feels like a clever play on the concept in a time when the style was slowly being phased out, along with tank controls. More than anything, though, I think Toyama gets that games are partly a cinematic art form, and that creative perspectives can inform the game design or make a relatively simple mission feel much more impactful.

Question Question about Hellraiser game NSFW

Hi, I have a question for people who’ve played Hellraiser. Is the game really as creepy and disgusting as people say?

I’m a bit of an anxious person, and I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth playing. I wasn’t planning to at first, but I looked into it a bit and got curious. I checked out the intro, and so far I haven’t found anything especially scary for me. I’ve watched Saw and played Outlast, Dead Space, and SH before, and those were fine, but people say that’s child’s play compared to Hellraiser. Is it really just gore for half the game, or is it not that bad and more hype than actual extreme content? (Nudity and kink don’t really bother me)

Question Horror video games for an evening

I’m organising a Halloween video game night with some mates, so I’m on the lookout for horror games that last between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours at most.

Games where you might die and have to start again from the last save point, because the idea is that one person plays, and if they die, someone else takes over the computer and carries on, and so on.

Games with a tense, oppressive atmosphere and plenty of jump scares and screamers.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Question Horror simulator games

Are there any simulator games like TCG Card Shop Sim, Supermarket Sim, or even tidy up games that have incorporated horror? I’m not talking the short ones like Boba Shop, any Chillas Art game, or anomaly games, but long ones you can sink dozens of hours into.

I’ve been looking for a while but I can’t find anything :( the closest I’ve found is Quarantine Zone (which I’ve played) but it’s not quite what I’m after.

EDIT: The Mortuary Assistant is another that I’ve found which almost fits the bill, I just wish it was longer.

SPOILER / Silver Pines Frage Spoiler

Question Any short objective-based or level progression horror PC games with suspenseful jumpscares?

For my halloween event this October, I'm planning a trick or treat event on my PC for my nephews (teens and young adults) that will test their courage. Anyone who wins will get a lootbag full of treats, while the losers get a trick of jumpscares. For casual gamers, I chose PvZ and let them finish two levels in hard mode. For the other who are seeking a thrill, I let them play Slenderman and get at least six pages. But I still want more games to add since replaying two games in a span five nights gets boring fast. Please recommend non-narrative and relatively short PC games around 15 to 1 hour of playtime. Or level-based/ day progression games like FNAF (didn't include this one because they already know the tips and tricks).

Discussion I started Hellraiser: Revival expecting a somewhat short game. From midnight on October 9th to now, October 19 I've played 2-3 hours a night, except for a couple days. I'm still not done. Did anyone anticipate this thing being about as large in scale as RE 4?
