Megathread GHOST TOUCH issue (mega thread)

This is an issue where HomePod (2nd generation) and mini will start to play music randomly and summon siri or reset by itself after a power-cut. Or even volume getting up and down.

This is caused by a faulty touch panel on these devices respectively.

It is NOT a concern for all users but A LOT of users/devices are affected unfortunately.

Solution 1 (if you have Apple care or warranty): Take it to apple for a free replacement.

Solution 2: Look for a guide/video online on how to open it and disconnect the touch panel on your respective device.

Solution 3: There’s actually a third-party touch panel for the second gen being sold on AliExpress that you can buy and replace. (Cost a bit)

Solution 4: Buy a new HomePod.

Solution 5: Find someone trustworthy that can repair it.(some listed in the comments)

Having the touch accommodation will not work on the long run as it gets worse.

Creating this mega thread so that the sub is not filled with the same questions over and over again!

Discussion Home Theater setup screen on iPhone

Post image
179 Upvotes

Here’s the splash screen for Home Theater on iPhone.

You’ll use Apple TV to set up and calibrate your surround setup. iPhone will offer to open Apple TV Remote to continue.

When paired with HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini 2 speakers can only serve as rear speakers.

This screen doesn’t ship in iOS 27.2 beta 4, but was added by Apple in an iPhone Duo simulator.

Question/Support New Apple TV 4K vs. original HomePod: which device responds to “Hey Siri” when both are in the same room?

I’m considering buying the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) with its built-in microphones, but I have a few questions before pulling the trigger.

I currently have an original HomePod in my living room, which I use for hands-free Siri and HomeKit control. My main frustration is that Siri takes several seconds to respond to commands. For example, when I say “Hey Siri, turn off the lights,” there’s a noticeable delay before she says “On it,” but the lights turn off almost immediately after that.

I’m wondering whether the new Apple TV could improve this experience.

  1. Can the new Apple TV 4K listen for “Hey Siri” and respond to smart-home commands when the TV itself is off or in standby?
  2. If the Apple TV and original HomePod are in the same room, which device actually picks up and responds to “Hey Siri”? Does Apple intelligently choose between them, or does the HomePod usually take priority?
  3. Is there a way to make the Apple TV handle hands-free Siri commands while keeping the original HomePod for music and audio?
  4. Could the new Apple TV’s hardware and Siri capabilities meaningfully reduce the delay before Siri acknowledges HomeKit commands, or is that delay likely caused by something else?
  5. Would I be better off replacing the original HomePod with the new HomePod mini 2 instead?

Thanks a lot!

Question/Support New HP mini 2 ghost touch issue solved ?!

Has Apple made any statement regarding a hardware-based solution for the "ghost touch" issue for the new HomePod mini 2?

Because there’s no way I’m buying these new HomePods if I end up having to disable the feature two years down the line—once the warranty has expired—and lose that functionality altogether...

They’ve come up with a software fix in the upcoming 27.2 update, but surely we want it to work perfectly on the new units, right?!

Question/Support Stopped detecting smoke alarms?

My HomePod Minis used to reliably pick up smoke alarms in my house. Just had one go off the other day and noticed the Minis did nothing. Anyone else notice this, or have any other idea what it could be related to? All are running OS 27.

Question/Support LG C4 > New Apple TV 4K > Homepod Gen 2. How exactly is my PS5 sound getting without latency/input lag through the Homepods?

I have a PS5 Pro hooked up to my LG C4 through HDMI 1. I want to buy the new Apple TV 4K because my TV UI is getting more and more sluggish.

I know the Apple TV box gets connected with HDMI eARC to the TV but how exactly do I hook up the PS5 with the Homepods? I feel like there will be some kind of lag, no?

Discussion I hate to be an apple conspiracy theorist but…

Apple just released the HomeView, new HomePod mini 2nd gen and Apple TV 4K 4th.

All of a sudden my Apple TV 4K and 2 HomePods stop working for different reasons. 1 HomePod is having a ghost touch issue, the other stop working after an update and the volume buttons just keep flashing. My Apple TV 4k froze in the middle of an update and is not able to be updated or reset because there’s no USB input. Now I need to replace these products.

Coincidence? Maybe? Maybe not especially since we know they were slowing down the iPhones. Smh 🤦‍♂️

Just me or are your home products tweaking lately?

Discussion 2 HomePod Mini 2's in stereo or 1 HomePod (Gen 2)?

I'm wanting to get a HomePod for my bedroom, just for music and podcasts, and also phone calls.

Initially I thought the new mini, but then I saw you can do 2 in stereo! But at that point I'm only £50 off a HomePod.

If I just cared about sound quality does 1 HomePod beat stereo HomePod Mini 2's?

Or should I just get a normal Bluetooth speaker really?

Thank you.

Discussion I feel like this sounds more Apple like, but maybe I'm just getting old...

...But maybe offering a wall-mount version with less-audio fidelity is why they didn't actually name it HomePod touch.. But man, that makes so much more sense in an Apple ecosystem than HomeView. Someone at apple is starting to humor the letter V.

Either way, I don’t know if this has already been posted, recently or ever before. I didn't even search. I just made this image and thought "I must share this now and ask opinions on what everyone else thinks a better name would be"

Question/Support Considering a Home Pod for home office

Is the Home Pod ideal for a home office scenario? My home office is in a small apartment bedroom. I would use it as a speaker for video calls and to play Apple Music. And check the temperature (however you do that).

And do I need two of them to get the most out of it? I have an L-shaped desk and when I sit at it, I face the corner of the wall (the desk is against the wall). Wondering if one is enough?

What else can this thing do?

edit: Can I also make calls from my MacBook Pro (that's connected to my iPhone) from the Home Pod and if so how does that work exactly?

Question/Support “Old” Apple Intelligence on HomePod mini 2?

Hi, I intended to purchase a HomePod mini 2 for my room, but I am uncertain whether it will include any artificial intelligence in Europe, like the one with ChatGPT integration currently on iPhones. Thanks

Question/Support Buy 2 gen 2 minis or buy 1 gen 1 used

Hello so I have had my HomePod mini and yeah it is not the best sounding speaker but I got an Apple TV a couple of months ago and have being waiting for the new release of the HomePod mini 2 to buy the second gen and get a stereo set up for my Apple TV.

I just found out that Apple TV won’t let you combine a Gen 1 HomePod Mini and a Gen 2.

So I basically can see I have 2 options.

#1 buy 2 new gen 2 HomePod mini and figure out where to put the gen 1 ( basically costs $300 so I might as well just get a better sound bar or other options)

#2 get a used HomePod mini gen 1 but I don’t know how that would be.

If you have any thoughts I would love to hear them out.

Question/Support High Pitched Tone coming from OG HomePod

Anyone ever heard this high pitched frequency coming from their HomePod? I have mine set up in a stereo pair connected to my Apple TV and it’s only the left one that’s doing it. Seems to happen with or without audio playing. I thought it could be electrical interference from the outlet, but plugging it into another wall outlet didn’t seem to help either. Any ideas?

Question/Support Apple care for home pod mini

Hey guys,

I have a HomePod mini that needs to be fixed or replaced. I have AppleCare on this device, and I'm curious: if they check it and decide to replace it, is there a chance they might give me a mini 2, or will they give me the original version?

Question/Support Can HomePod mini 2 speakers work as dedicated rears with an existing soundbar?

I currently have a KEF XIO soundbar, and I’m wondering whether the newly announced Apple TV 4K would let me add two HomePod mini 2 speakers as dedicated rear surrounds only 👀

Would I be able to assign them specifically to the rear left and rear right channels, while keeping my soundbar for the front channels?

Question/Support Siri and Home Theatre Audio with HomePods & Apple TV 4K

Not that long ago I got 2nd HomePod (2nd Gen) and recently decided to move the HomePods around to the same room to try out Home Theater Audio functionality to use the HomePods as TV speakers. This is connected to Apple TV 4K (2nd gen).

I have few questions cause I am unsure if this is a proper behavior for the system.

- when HomePods Stereo pair is selected as the TV speakers output , SIRI on HomePods no longer responds to any voice . Is this normal?

- when performing a lip sync setup, is it normal that the test noises are emitted from the TV speakers, not the actual HomePods themselves? It seems odd to hear test noises from the TV built-in speaker for lip syncing HomePods.

News Excited for mini 2

This sub has a lot of negativity in the comments for the new homepod mini 2. I feel like this device will be a godsend to replace my Amazon echo dot. I cannot stand the Amazon Alexa ecosystem and their constant barrage of ads and continually asking to upgrade. I already pay for prime, I shouldn’t have to listen to it. Plus I don’t think my data is secure with them.

Even if it is a lateral move from their unit, I will be very happy.

Question/Support HomePods blinking when setup on ARC

As title says, I’ve noticed my HomePods blinking when my Apple TV is idle and not being used. This only happens when I set them on ARC to play TV audio.

They work normally and TV audio also works as it should. But why the blinking? Does anyone have any info on this? Is this an issue?

Help please.
My HomePod Mini Gen 1 is failing to reset itself and is stuck on this stage.
Everytime the three beeps come in, it goes back into this red mode. Without me touching it.
How do I troubleshoot this ?
