Context: King David Kalakaua of Hawaii became the first foreign ruler to visit the United States in late 1874. The populace was somewhat shocked at the King’s arrival, but grew to become excited at his traveling through the states.

He arrived in DC to meet with President Ulysses Grant at the first State Dinner, where they discussed trade and tax on Hawaiian goods.

7 years later Kalakaua would return to the United States during his World Tour and meet with President Chester Arthur, with whom he shared an uncanny resemblance according to a close friend of Kalakaua who traveled with him

Context: According to Hawaiian Oral tradition, in the 14-15th century, a strange ship drifted onto the shore of the Island of Maui, bringing the captain they referred to as Kaluiki and his crew to Hawaii. The captain gave the Hawaiians an iron sword as a gift and he and his crew integrated into Hawaiian society. Because Hawaiians had never discovered metallurgy, the sword was revered and viewed as unconquerable.

It is theorized that Kaluiki and his crew were actually Japanese or some other Asian sailors, and that the sword was a katana or some form of Asian sword. The sword’s fate is unfortunately unknown (it probably broke at some point and it they couldn’t fix it)

In 1947 Soviet Union rejected the US offer to fund post-war recovery. Fearing the Western influence, Soviet Union forced its new satellites to reject the offer as well, including Poland or Czechoslovakia.

Instead, it came up with the Molotov Plan and later the COMECON, which is generally viewed as a failure.

Context: Spam is a canned meat introduced in the late 1930s that is incredibly popular even to this day.

It became very popular in Hawaii during WW2 as part of rations for military servicemen and remains a staple among the Islands today.

It was also sent to the Soviet Union as part of lend lease agreements, with Nikita Kruschev later saying "Without Spam, we wouldn't have been able to feed our army."
