Discussion I hate how aloof Lupin is with Harry

I know it’s his trauma but geeze, he didn’t even really try with Harry. He was the only one from that friend group available and he never even checked in with Harry growing up. Then he signs up to teach at the school where his dead friend’s son is attending and - nothing. Zero indication that Harry is anything more than a student he likes.

Then he leaves and buzzes off for a few years with no word. Doesn’t write, not even after Sirius dies. And when they do see each other in the later books, he’s just kinda there. They basically don’t have a single private conversation after third year. Then he makes Harry his kid’s godfather like they’re close friends but that just doesn’t ring true.

Discussion I just realized how tragic Moaning Myrtle was.

No wonder why Myrtle was THAT sad. Imagine being a little girl at wartime (she was Muggle-born and we all know that 1940's was a difficult time for British Muggles) and being accepted to Hogwarts meant an escape, but later on, Hogwarts becomes a life of hell because of the bullies, and you become Lord Voldemort's first victim.

Around the time that she received the Hogwarts letter she must be excited to tell her family, but I can imagine her being terribly sad at the thought leaving them behind suffering at war while she slept peacefully at the Hogwarts. And she died and became a ghost her Muggle parents probably never saw, talked to, ever again while knowing they were still suffering from the war. Oh poor girl.

Discussion Draco Malfoy screwed Slytherin out of the Quidditch Cup in Prisoner of Azkaban

Think about it. Draco faked and exaggerated his injury from Buckbeak to get Hagrid into trouble and Buckbeak put on trial. He then used his supposed injury as an excuse to have the opening Gryffindor vs Slytherin Quidditch match rescheduled, forcing Gryffindor to play Hufflepuff instead.

As someone who plays sports in recreational leagues, I find this ridiculous to begin with. Once a game is scheduled, it’s your team’s responsibility to field the players available that day. If your star player is injured or unavailable, too bad. You play with whoever you have. Obviously, Malfoy got preferential treatment because of Lucius and his influence.
And we all know what happened during that match.

The Dementors showed up, Harry was affected far worse than anyone else, fell off his broom and Hufflepuff ended up winning.

Now imagine if the original Gryffindor vs Slytherin match had gone ahead as scheduled.

Slytherin would’ve almost certainly won! Even if Malfoy was still pretending to be injured, they could’ve fielded a replacement Seeker. Once Harry fell off his broom, Gryffindor would’ve been left without a Seeker, and under Quidditch rules, you can’t substitute players during a match.
Even if Slytherin didn’t immediately catch the Snitch, like Cedric did, the game would’ve continued with Gryffindor having practically no chance of winning.

Slytherin went on to beat both Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw that season, although the Ravenclaw match was a narrow victory. Had they beaten Gryffindor in the opening match, they would’ve finished with three wins and almost certainly taken the Quidditch Cup.

Instead, both Gryffindor and Slytherin finished with two wins and one loss, with Gryffindor ultimately winning the Cup on points.

So basically, Draco’s little stunt to get Buckbeak executed and avoid playing Gryffindor ended up costing his own House the Quidditch Cup.
If Draco hadn’t been such a petty little brat, Slytherin could’ve won the Cup that year. The irony is hilarious.

Discussion Why was Ginny allowed to return to Hogwarts in DH and why didn’t Voldemort use her to get to Harry?

I know Harry broke up with Ginny to protect her, but their relationship was hardly a secret, nor was Harry’s connection to the Weasley family.

In CoS and OotP, Voldemort had already exploited Harry’s attachment to others, using Ginny and Sirius to get to him. By DH, he controlled the Ministry, and Death Eaters were openly hunting Harry’s allies. So why wouldn’t he at least have tried to use Ginny to lure Harry out?

And why did the Weasleys let her return to Hogwarts, knowing the situation? I understand that they wanted to avoid suspicion by keeping up appearances, but wasn‘t that too late anyway, given how well-known their deep ties to Harry were?

Also, I’m not arguing that Voldemort understands love, but he definitely had prior knowledge of how Harry behaves concerning the people he cares about.

Question How powerful is Harry Potter ?

Harry is a pretty skilled duelist and can give any adult a run for their money but is he really that powerful ?

Compared to Dumbledore and Voldemort and could he ever reach their level ?

With Voldemort Harry did have an unfair advantage due to him being protected by his mother charm and how he became the master of the elder wand thus Voldemort couldn’t use it against him at the end.

Discussion I kind of feel bad for Professor Trelawney

We know that divination is a real form of magic, although rare. Trelawney made the prophecy about Harry and Voldemort, and she is a real seer.

Pretty much everyone (aside from Lavender, Parvati, and Dumbledore) just writes her off as a fraud and doesn't like her. Granted she is definitely odd, and many of her predictions don't come true. But she is basically an outcast. Almost never comes down from her tower, spends a ton of time in isolation, has very few conversations with students and staff.

I've come to realize that I really feel kind of bad for her. While she's definitely weird, she doesn't really deserve to be treated like that. I'm guessing this is probably a common thing for seers, just being a bit of an outcast. Has to be a miserable life.

Discussion Why does Harry not care about getting better?

What separates Harry from Voldemort and Dumbledore is his complete lack of desire to get better at magic. In fact we see numerous times that he just coasts through his schooling. Outside of Quidditch, he does not have the same aptitude to get better that the other great wizards have.

Hermione shows him the power of hard work, Ron shows him the world magic unlocks, he has a front row seat to some of the most powerful wizards and knows what they did.

He wins every duel he faces and is clearly gifted. He has immense power but hard work could make him elite. We joke be he learns one spell and uses it in every battle from then on.

Does this bother anyone else?

Misc Hermione

Rewatching the movies after listening through the new audiobooks and I’m realizing for the first time that I think Hermione is really annoyingly portrayed in the movies. I think it’s partially because of how much character development gets cut. Is this a common opinion?

Discussion It still bothers me how the Trio almost starved in Deathly Hallows when food duplication is literal

1.8k Upvotes

Hermione explicitly explains Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration: you can’t conjure food from nothing, but you can multiply it if you already have some. They literally had a loaf of bread and some scraps. Why didn't they just duplicate it infinitely? Instead, we spent half the book reading about them being moody and starving in a tent. Did Hermione just panic and forget basic transfiguration, or is this a massive oversight?

Discussion They don't understand

• Upvotes

How do I explain to my younger friends that Harry potter gets better by a lot after the first three chapters. They are ditching the whole series just because they do not want to wait one more chapter. We are all people who discovered the series long long after it was written and the rest of the friend group has read it!

Discussion Multicasting Spells

• Upvotes

We see a couple instances of multicasting spells having a greater effect than individual casting:

-the dragon tamers combining Stupefy on the Horntail

-Harry and Cedric combining Stupefy to the acromantula

-Harry holding 3 wands and (apparently) that also works

So what do we think would happen if 2 or more people multicasted a Patronus? Either 2 or more separate animals attack together (the boring option) or the Patronuses merge into a chimera creature (the cool option)?

Discussion Would Harry's story been different if even one adult had been consistently honest with him?

So many adults in Harry’s life either hide information from him, make decisions for him, or tell him things when it’s already too late. Do you think Harry would’ve made better decisions if the adults around him had been more honest, or were some things always going to happen regardless?
I’m curious which specific conversation you think would’ve changed the most.

If the pensieve could be used for memories, why couldn’t they use the Pensieve with Harry to prove what he said happened in the graveyard during GoF?

Discussion Blood Protection

I've been thinking about something in Harry Potter that I don't see discussed very often, and the more I think about it, the more questions I have.

We know Dumbledore left Harry with the Dursleys because Petunia was Lily's blood relative. By having Harry live with her, Lily's protection could continue through the blood connection.

But here's where I start having questions.

1. Was 4 Privet Drive even Petunia's house?

Vernon was the one with the job at Grunnings. As far as I can remember, Petunia's employment is never mentioned. She appears to be a homemaker, while Vernon is the primary breadwinner.

We aren't told whose name was on the deed or who legally owned the property, so I'm not claiming it definitely belonged to Vernon alone. But if Vernon was paying the bills and controlling the household, what would have happened if he decided Harry wasn't welcome anymore?

2. What if Vernon had kicked Petunia out?

In Order of the Phoenix, Vernon wants Harry gone after the Dementor attack. Dumbledore sends Petunia a Howler, and she ultimately insists that Harry stay.

But what if Vernon had taken a different approach? What if he had kicked Petunia out of the house

3. Why was Dumbledore's plan so dependent on someone who didn't even want Harry?

Petunia resented Harry, Vernon openly despised him, and Harry grew up in an emotionally abusive household. Yet Dumbledore's plan depended on Harry remaining there.

If Petunia didn't own the house, didn't have control over the finances, and could potentially have been forced out by Vernon, how secure was this arrangement really?

And if Petunia could have taken Harry somewhere else, would the protection have continued in a different home? Or was the protection specifically tied to 4 Privet Drive?

Discussion Do you think that the Triwizard Tournament would take place again in the future?

By now, it is stated that after GOF, the tournament was discontinued due of Cedric's Death, despite that it was due of any lack of structure but of how Voldemort intervened in it. Of course most people didn't believe that back then and even suspected of Harry, even though he was the only witness.

However, I keep thinking. As the Hogwarts battle ended and the decades went by (let's say, 25-30 years), the ministry had changed and all students at Hogwarts didn't live the trauma and Harry, now being an auror, could make people believe him that the Triwizard Tournament wasn't the problem but of how a foreign interference ruined the tournament and caused someone's death. With that said, they could consider to bring back the tournament, with some additional security measures.

What do you think? Would it return after many years or would it remain history?

Discussion What if Tom Riddle's memory from the diary became real? Would Tom's main soul get a proper body?

So basically, Tom's Horcrux drains Ginny's life, he comes back to life, does he seek out where his soul is? Does he go to Albania and find the rest of it, and allow it to merge with him? How does that happen, and does Peter still escape and find Voldemort, pledge his loyalty, and work on expediting the events of the fourth book?

Discussion Riddle dumbledore faceoff in OotP

Is the duel at the ministry the first meeting of riddle and dumbledore since he visited hogwarts for the defence job or is there any canon for their meeting during the 1st wizarding war? If there isnt any it would mean that its the first time he has seen the fully transformed riddle. wondered why the book didnt dwell on dumbledores reaction on seeing the snakeman for the first time instead of the handsome man he once knew.

Discussion Harry Potter and an Animated Adaption

When I see this pop up in discussions, one of the most common things people bring up is the fact that it is less money to be made in animation vs live action.

The thing is, is that something that should concern us? Harry Potter is already a very well off franchise that has diversified into other mediums such as theater and even video games.

From a fan perception, I would love to see an animated version of Harry Potter since that would bring in new fans who prefer animation rather than other mediums. Like how the video games brought in new fans who prefer video games to books or movies.

This would increase the reach of Harry Potter to allow us to interact and appreciate the series with a wider range of fans than every before.

Question Who are Hagrid’s friends?

I’m re reading HBP and I’m at the part where Aragog has died and Hagrid writes to Harry to ask if he, Ron, and Hermione will come to the burial.

All of a sudden it struck me as odd that Hagrid didn’t have anyone other than 3 students to ask to join him for the burial.

I know he’s friendly with a lot of the creatures in the Forrest and I know he goes into Hogsmeade to the pub but who are his friends outside the golden trio?

He spends a lot of time with the three of them. So I’m wondering who he spent time with before they arrived at school.

Discussion Allergies and Polyjuice

Kind of a dumb question, but if someone were to take polyjuice potion and eat something they were allergic to, do u think they would get an allergic reaction in the new body they're in. Or do u think they'd be fine?? OR would they get a delayed reaction in their own body once the potion wears off.

Tbf tho, this is a magical world. I'm sure they'd have a solution for allergies anyway.
