It's the season of the "Is Harlem safe" posts and other more interesting questions from people thinking about moving here. Please post your questions related to moving to Harlem in this thread only.
As u/BuhDeepThatsAllFolx (thank you!) kindly and calmly explained in another thread regarding Harlem's Safety:
"This is by far the number one question Harlemites hate answering.
It’s so annoying. This is our home. We all have some sense of comfort here or else we’d move.
The short response to your post:
Don’t know you and the feeling of safety is subjective. You’ll have to feel it out and decide on your own if it feels safe for you to walk or take a cab
Don’t listen to Fox News or right wing media telling you NYC is scary. They’re just scared of the world and looking for reasons to hate POC and love guns more than people"
Now that the safety question is answered, there's no need to ask anymore.
Now this thread is the place to ask your other questions about moving here! Serious inquiries only, and remember to be kind!

They spent what I assume is a bunch of money painting lanes and changing signs and things are exactly as they have always been, tons of double parked cars in what is now the bus lane. Why did they bother?

Has anyone else noticed that there has been a noticeable increase in folks shooting up on the sidewalk (and hanging out on and sometimes passing out on the sidewalk for hours) on the streets along Morningside Park? I've seen many more needles on the sidewalk as well. I feel for these people, and I hope they get help, but it's really impacting quality of life in these very residential streets that have plenty of children.
Any advice? Anyone know what's going on?

Hi everyone! I’m a research assistant with Power at Home, a Columbia University project studying and advocating for better housing conditions by making building decarbonization more equitable.
We’re recruiting in Northern Manhattan, with a focus on buildings along the Broadway corridor between 120th and 158th Streets. If you live in this area, please reach out so we can confirm whether your building is eligible.
Participation involves sharing your experiences with indoor temperatures, air quality, and energy costs, and having a small indoor environmental sensor placed in your apartment. Our team will explain what it collects and how the information will be used.
Participants will be compensated for their time. What we learn can help identify improvements that support healthier, more comfortable, and affordable homes.
If you’re interested, please message me for more information about eligibility, compensation, and what participation involves. Happy to answer questions here, too!

Hi All - My company is doing an event in East Harlem in early November. Due to the event theme, we are trying to stick with a brain health diet (Mediterranean, MIND, etc). Does anyone know of good caterers in the area or places that will deliver? Thanks!

Hi everyone!
First, I want to sincerely thank everyone who has signed up to be my patient, attended appointments, shared my posts, or supported me throughout my dental hygiene journey.
The support I’ve received from this community has been amazing, and I truly appreciate every one of you! I’ll continue reaching out throughout the semester.
I’m now hoping to extend that same support to my classmate Chelsea, who is also a senior dental hygiene student at Hostos Community College.
She’s currently looking for patients ages 13 and older, especially individuals who haven’t had a dental cleaning in a year or longer.
Services are provided at our supervised student dental hygiene clinic in the Bronx. Appointments may require multiple visits.
If you’re interested in becoming her patient, or know someone who might be, please consider
completing her registration form below.

Thank you again for supporting me and for helping another future dental hygienist get one step closer to graduation! ❤️

I'm currently starting a small supper club for my friend group, inspired by my great grandma who was known in circle for throwing dinner parties in her Harlem co-op. I'd like my first event to be an homage to Harlem.
I was raised in Central Harlem and grew up eating many of the dishes you'd typically see at Harlem lunch counters or rent parties back in the day. I'd like to include more modern takes on menu items that could be seen in these spaces. I'm also open to reworking food items that were created in Harlem.
Examples of what I was thinking were:
-Small whiting sandwiches as appetizers
-upgraded versions of Drake's snacks (as the first bakery was in Harlem)
-short ribs with gravy
-cod cakes and grits
Obviously these item ideas aren't fully cohesive yet but I'm looking for suggestions of items to serve. Also would love any history facts anyone can provide as it relates to Harlem lunch counters, rent parties, and food items generally found in Harlem from the 1930s-1980s.

They are thieves observed to be operating in the Upper East Side and East Harlem. They are now pretending to be delivery people, wearing high-visibility jackets and carrying delivery bags similar to food carrier services. They will ring all the doorbell, especially the upper floors until an annoyed tenant, opens the door. If your building has the old audio only Intercom system, they will often say they are delivering. Ask for the apartment number and if it's not your apartment number, it's better not to open it. In this incident, once the black guy is in, he goes up to other floors to steal the packages that Amazon delivers. If you see one of these folks, expect a look-out to be nearby. If these folks have victimized your building, let us know... we have lots of clear footages to put these people on police notice.
Do not confront them with violence. Call 911 if you are witnessing a crime happening or have been a victim of the crime. RECORD in safety (if you are witnessing it) and REPORT the matter no matter how small the value that was stolen. The police may not act on non-violent crimes, but if you report, you are reminding the police that the incidents are piling up, and that's on them when their internal audit starts looking into their report logs. I understand most victims will not spend time on it since the package is insured or they'll get a re-delivery, but then again, that's exactly why the thieves will continue to target the building, there is inaction and it seems like nobody cares from the tenants, when in fact everyone gets pissed off when their packages are stolen. So my advise is, keep reporting. A problem never goes away by merely not talking about it.
For everyone's information:
Under NY State Senate Bill 2025-S10703, private carrier package theft in New York is established as a class E felony. [1, 2]

Hey New Yorkers!
I'm Finn, 22, from a small town near Frankfurt, Germany. We sometimes call Frankfurt "Mainhattan" because of its skyline, so I guess I've already had a little practice with skyscrapers. Just on a much smaller scale. 😄
I've never been to the US, but I've always been fascinated by the people, their openness, the music, fashion, and culture. And New York has always been my dream.
There's something almost paradoxical about it. You're surrounded by so many people, yet nobody really cares what you're doing. Everyone is living their own life, following their own path. There's a certain kind of freedom in that which I've always found fascinating.
I'm not dreaming of some glamorous lifestyle. Just taking the subway to work, exploring the city afterward, meeting people, and experiencing everyday life would mean the world to me.
A little about me: I've completed a three-year vocational apprenticeship in metal fabrication, spent another year training as an industrial mechanic, and also worked in administration and logistics.
I'm hoping to spend 6–12 months legally living and working in or around NYC. I'm currently exploring J-1 Intern/Trainee programs for technical fields like manufacturing or quality control, as well as H-2B seasonal jobs.
So I figured I'd take a chance and ask the people who actually live here:
Does anyone know a company or business owner who might consider hosting an international technical trainee, or someone familiar with these visa programs?
I'm not looking for a handout. I'm willing to work hard and do everything the right way. Sometimes all it takes is one connection.
This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and now that I'm 22, I really want to give it a shot rather than spend the next few years wondering what could have been.
Thanks for reading, New York!

Hi folks, I recently moved to an apartment near W 135th Street. Am looking for two tables. DM or reply here with photos and the item location if you are trying to get rid of your tables! I don't drive, so hopefully the item location is close to W 135th Street. Thanks!
BTW, if you're also trying to get rid of some bar chairs, let me know as well!
